Distinguish a bill of exchange from a promissory note, and explain why a bill requires acceptance while a note does not.

A bill of exchange is an instrument in writing containing an unconditional order, signed by the maker, directing a certain person to pay a certain sum of money to or to the order of a certain person, or to the bearer. It has three parties: the drawer, who is the creditor and draws the bill; the drawee, who is the debtor ordered to pay and who becomes the acceptor on signing; and the payee, who is to receive payment and is usually but not necessarily the drawer.

A promissory note is an instrument in writing containing an unconditional undertaking, signed by the maker, to pay a certain sum to or to the order of a certain person or to the bearer. It has two parties: the maker, who is the debtor and promises to pay, and the payee, who is the creditor.

The substantive difference is the direction of the instrument. A bill is an order given by the creditor to the debtor. A note is a promise given by the debtor to the creditor.

This explains the acceptance requirement directly. In a bill, the person who writes the instrument is the creditor, who has no power to impose an obligation on the debtor merely by writing one down. Until the drawee signs across the bill signifying acceptance, it is an order that has not been assented to and creates no liability in the drawee. Acceptance is the drawee's agreement to the obligation.

In a promissory note, the person who writes the instrument is the debtor, who is promising on their own behalf. The person promising and the person liable are the same, so the note binds the maker from the moment it is made and no further assent is needed.

B's books: on acceptance as before, and on maturity Bills Payable Dr. ₹60,000 / To Bank ₹60,000. Nothing whatever is recorded on discounting. B owes ₹60,000 on the due date irrespective of what A did with the instrument, and recording an entry here is the commonest error in the topic.

(iii) Bill endorsed to C and dishonoured, C paying noting charges of ₹500.
A's books: on endorsement, C Dr. ₹60,000 / To Bills Receivable ₹60,000. On dishonour, B Dr. ₹60,500 / To C ₹60,500. C recovers from A, and A in turn charges B with the full amount including the noting charges.
B's books: on acceptance as before. On dishonour, Bills Payable Dr. ₹60,000 and Noting Charges Dr. ₹500 / To A ₹60,500.

The principle governing noting charges is that they are ultimately borne by the acceptor, whose default caused them. Whoever pays them debits them onward until they reach the acceptor's account.

Question 4

X accepted a bill for ₹80,000 drawn by Y. Before maturity X requests renewal. Y agrees to accept ₹20,000 in cash and to draw a fresh bill for the balance plus interest at 12% per annum for three months. Show the entries in Y's books, and separately explain how retirement under rebate differs from renewal.

Computation. Balance after the cash payment is ₹80,000 − ₹20,000 = ₹60,000. Interest at 12% per annum for three months is ₹60,000 × 12/100 × 3/12 = ₹1,800. The new bill is therefore drawn for ₹61,800.

How retirement differs from renewal.

The two arise from opposite circumstances. Renewal occurs because the acceptor cannot pay at maturity and needs more time; retirement occurs because the acceptor chooses to pay before maturity.

In renewal the holder is deprived of money for longer, and is compensated by interest charged to the acceptor. In retirement the holder receives money earlier than due, and compensates the acceptor by allowing a rebate, which is a discount for early payment.

The accounting is correspondingly opposite. Interest on renewal is an income of the holder and an expense of the acceptor. A rebate on retirement is a loss to the holder, debited to Rebate on Bill, and a gain to the acceptor, credited to Rebate in the acceptor's books.

A rebate on retirement should also be distinguished from discount on discounting, which the two are frequently confused. Discount on discounting is paid to a bank for advancing money against a bill; rebate on retirement is allowed to the acceptor for paying early. They arise from different events and different counterparties.

Question 5

Distinguish direct from indirect expenses and classify the following: carriage inwards, carriage outwards, factory wages, office salaries, import duty on goods purchased, and advertising.

Accepted Answer

The test is whether the expense is incurred in bringing goods to a saleable condition and location, or in running the business and selling its output. Direct expenses go to the Trading Account and enter the computation of gross profit; indirect expenses go to the Profit and Loss Account and are charged after gross profit.

Carriage inwards — direct. It is the cost of bringing purchased goods to the premises and forms part of the cost of those goods.

Carriage outwards — indirect. It is the cost of delivering goods to customers, which arises on selling and after the goods are already saleable.

Factory wages — direct. Wages paid to workers engaged in production or in making goods ready for sale are part of the cost of the goods.

Office salaries — indirect. Administrative in nature and unrelated to bringing any particular goods to a saleable condition.

Import duty on goods purchased — direct. A non-recoverable duty on purchase forms part of the cost of the goods.

Advertising — indirect. A selling and distribution expense incurred to promote sales, not to make the goods saleable.

The classification matters beyond the placement of a figure. Gross profit is intended to measure the margin on trading in goods, so charging a selling expense against it would understate that margin and misrepresent the profitability of the trading activity itself. The pairing of carriage inwards and carriage outwards is the standard way this is examined, because the two have almost the same name and opposite treatments.

Question 6

State the double effect of each of the following adjustments: (a) closing stock ₹85,000; (b) salaries outstanding ₹12,000; (c) insurance prepaid ₹4,000; (d) commission received in advance ₹7,000; (e) depreciation on machinery ₹30,000; (f) goods worth ₹9,000 taken by the proprietor for personal use.

Every adjustment appearing outside the trial balance has exactly two effects, one in the Trading or Profit and Loss Account and one in the Balance Sheet. Omitting the second is the largest single cause of lost marks in final accounts questions.

(a) Closing stock ₹85,000 — credited in the Trading Account, and shown as a current asset in the Balance Sheet. Crediting it in the Trading Account is what removes the cost of unsold goods from the cost of goods sold, giving effect to matching.

(b) Salaries outstanding ₹12,000 — added to salaries in the Profit and Loss Account, and shown as a current liability. The expense belongs to the period that benefited from the service, not the period in which it is paid.

(c) Insurance prepaid ₹4,000 — deducted from insurance in the Profit and Loss Account, and shown as a current asset. The payment relates to a future period, so it is carried forward rather than charged now.

(d) Commission received in advance ₹7,000 — deducted from commission received in the Profit and Loss Account, and shown as a current liability. The amount has been received but not earned, and the enterprise still owes the corresponding service.

(e) Depreciation on machinery ₹30,000 — charged to the Profit and Loss Account, and deducted from machinery in the Balance Sheet.

(f) Goods taken by the proprietor, ₹9,000 — deducted from purchases in the Trading Account, and deducted from capital as drawings in the Balance Sheet. It is not a sale: under the business entity concept the proprietor is an outsider, but no sale to a customer has occurred and no revenue has been earned. Treating it as a sale would overstate both turnover and profit.

Question 7

Debtors stood at ₹5,00,000 before adjustments. Further bad debts of ₹20,000 are to be written off, a provision for doubtful debts of 5% is to be maintained, and a provision for discount on debtors of 2% is to be created. The existing provision for doubtful debts is ₹14,000. Compute the amounts charged to the Profit and Loss Account and the figure of debtors in the Balance Sheet.

Accepted Answer

The computations must be performed in a fixed order, because each provision is computed on the balance remaining after the previous deduction.

Step 1 — further bad debts.
Debtors ₹5,00,000 less further bad debts ₹20,000 = ₹4,80,000.
The ₹20,000 is charged to the Profit and Loss Account.

Step 2 — provision for doubtful debts.
Required provision = 5% of ₹4,80,000 = ₹24,000.
Existing provision = ₹14,000.
Charge to the Profit and Loss Account = ₹24,000 − ₹14,000 = ₹10,000.
Only the increase is charged. Charging the whole ₹24,000 is the commonest error in this topic and double-counts the ₹14,000 already provided in an earlier year.

Step 3 — provision for discount on debtors.
Base = ₹4,80,000 − ₹24,000 = ₹4,56,000.
Provision = 2% of ₹4,56,000 = ₹9,120, charged to the Profit and Loss Account.
The base excludes the doubtful debts because a discount for prompt payment will only ever be allowed to debtors who actually pay. Computing it on ₹4,80,000 would provide for discount on amounts not expected to be received at all.

Total charged to the Profit and Loss Account: ₹20,000 + ₹10,000 + ₹9,120 = ₹39,120.

Balance Sheet presentation:
Debtors ₹5,00,000
Less further bad debts ₹20,000 → ₹4,80,000

Note that the Balance Sheet shows the full provisions of ₹24,000 and ₹9,120 as deductions, even though only ₹10,000 of the first was charged this year. The charge measures the movement; the deduction shows the total provided.

Question 8

Net profit before the manager's commission is ₹5,50,000. Compute the commission and the profit remaining if the manager is entitled to (a) 10% of net profit before charging such commission, and (b) 10% of net profit after charging such commission. Explain why the two differ and derive the formula used in (b).

Accepted Answer

(a) Commission at 10% on profit before charging it.
Commission = 10% of ₹5,50,000 = ₹55,000.
Profit remaining = ₹5,50,000 − ₹55,000 = ₹4,95,000.
The base is simply the profit figure given, and no algebra is required.

(b) Commission at 10% on profit after charging it.
Here the base is the profit remaining after the commission has been deducted, which is not known until the commission is known. Let the commission be C and the profit before commission be P.

C = 10% of (P − C)
C = 0.10P − 0.10C
C + 0.10C = 0.10P
1.10C = 0.10P
C = 0.10P ÷ 1.10 = P × 10/110

Substituting: C = ₹5,50,000 × 10/110 = ₹50,000.
Profit remaining = ₹5,50,000 − ₹50,000 = ₹5,00,000.
Check: 10% of ₹5,00,000 is ₹50,000, which confirms the commission is indeed 10% of the post-commission profit.

The general formula is Commission = Profit before commission × r ÷ (100 + r).

Why the two differ. In (a) the manager takes a tenth of the profit before their own commission is deducted; in (b) a tenth of what remains after it. Since the post-commission profit is necessarily smaller, the same stated percentage yields a smaller amount — ₹50,000 against ₹55,000 here. A commission of 10% on post-commission profit is one-eleventh of the pre-commission profit, not one-tenth.

The distinction between the two phrasings is deliberate on ICAI's part and is easy to miss when reading quickly. Underline which formulation the question uses before computing.

Question 9

Goods costing ₹1,50,000 were destroyed by fire. The insurance company admitted a claim of ₹1,10,000. Show the treatment in the Trading Account, the Profit and Loss Account and the Balance Sheet, and explain why the loss is removed from purchases.

Treatment.

Trading Account: the cost of the goods destroyed, ₹1,50,000, is deducted from purchases.

Profit and Loss Account: the uninsured portion, ₹1,50,000 − ₹1,10,000 = ₹40,000, is charged as a loss by fire.

Balance Sheet: the admitted claim of ₹1,10,000 is shown as a current asset, being an amount receivable from the insurance company.

The journal entry is: Insurance Claim A/c Dr. ₹1,10,000, Loss by Fire A/c Dr. ₹40,000 / To Purchases (or Trading) A/c ₹1,50,000.

Why the loss is removed from purchases.

The Trading Account is intended to measure the gross margin earned on goods that were actually traded. Goods destroyed by fire were never sold and generated no revenue, so leaving their cost inside purchases would charge the trading activity with a cost that produced no corresponding sale. Gross profit would be understated, and the resulting gross profit ratio would be distorted and useless for comparison with other years — which matters, because that ratio is one of the few figures a reader uses to judge trading performance.

Removing the cost from purchases restores the Trading Account to a comparison of the cost of goods sold against the revenue those goods produced. The loss is then disclosed separately in the Profit and Loss Account, where it belongs: it is a real loss of the period, but an abnormal one arising outside the ordinary course of trading, and disclosing it separately allows a reader to see that this year's net profit was reduced by an event unlikely to recur.

The insured portion is not a loss at all. The claim admitted by the insurer is an enforceable amount receivable, so it is an asset and only the balance represents value genuinely lost. Where a claim has been lodged but not yet admitted, prudence requires care: only the amount reasonably certain of recovery should be recognised as an asset.

Question 10

A trader keeps no proper books. His assets and liabilities were: on 1 April 2025, stock ₹1,20,000, debtors ₹90,000, cash ₹35,000, furniture ₹60,000, creditors ₹75,000; on 31 March 2026, stock ₹1,55,000, debtors ₹1,30,000, cash ₹48,000, furniture ₹54,000, creditors ₹92,000. He withdrew ₹8,000 monthly and introduced ₹1,00,000 of additional capital on 1 October 2025. Compute his profit, and state the limitations of the method used.

Computation of profit.
Profit = Closing capital + Drawings − Additional capital introduced − Opening capital
Profit = ₹2,95,000 + ₹96,000 − ₹1,00,000 − ₹2,30,000
Profit = ₹61,000

The logic of each term. Closing capital less opening capital gives the increase in the proprietor's stake, here ₹65,000. Drawings are added back because they reduced capital without being a business loss. Additional capital is deducted because it increased capital without being a profit. What remains must have been earned.

Note that the furniture has fallen from ₹60,000 to ₹54,000, which reflects depreciation already given effect in the closing figure; no separate adjustment is needed.

Limitations of the Statement of Affairs method.

It produces a single profit figure and nothing else. There is no gross profit, no sales figure, no expense analysis, so the trader learns that he made ₹61,000 but not how, and cannot compare his margin or his expense ratios with any other year.

The figure is only as reliable as the estimates of assets and liabilities at both dates. Since no ledger exists for real accounts, stock is counted and other assets are estimated, and any error at either date passes directly into the profit.

Capital in a Statement of Affairs is a balancing figure rather than a figure derived from the books, which means there is no independent check on it at all — unlike a balance sheet, where capital comes from the ledger and the two sides agreeing is itself evidence.

Unrecorded drawings, whether of cash or goods, understate the profit computed, and there is no mechanism to detect them.

The method cannot distinguish trading profit from other gains, so a profit on the sale of an asset is indistinguishable from profit earned by trading.

For these reasons the conversion method, which reconstructs the records into double entry and produces full final accounts, is preferable wherever the underlying information permits it.

Question 11

From the following, compute credit sales and credit purchases: opening debtors ₹1,40,000, closing debtors ₹1,85,000, cash received from debtors ₹6,20,000, discount allowed ₹18,000, bad debts ₹12,000, sales returns ₹25,000; opening creditors ₹95,000, closing creditors ₹1,18,000, cash paid to creditors ₹4,40,000, discount received ₹14,000, purchase returns ₹16,000. Explain the principle being applied.

Accepted Answer

The principle is that where one figure in an account is unknown but every other figure is known, the unknown emerges as the balancing figure. In incomplete records the trader maintains a cash book and personal accounts of debtors and creditors, because those are needed to run the business, and it is precisely from those surviving records that the missing nominal figures are recovered.

Debit side total = ₹4,40,000 + ₹14,000 + ₹16,000 + ₹1,18,000 = ₹5,88,000
Credit purchases = ₹5,88,000 − ₹95,000 = ₹4,93,000

Two points of method. Discount allowed and bad debts reduce debtors without any cash being received, which is why they must appear on the credit side; omitting them understates credit sales by their amount. Sales returns similarly reduce debtors and are frequently forgotten.

The same reasoning recovers other missing figures. Cash and bank balances come from the cash book the trader does maintain. Expenses are derived from payments adjusted for opening and closing outstanding and prepaid amounts. Where a gross profit ratio is given, it supplies whichever of sales, cost of goods sold or closing stock remains unknown. Present each reconstructed account as a numbered working note — they are separately markable and are where the examiner looks to see whether the method was understood rather than a formula recalled.

Question 12

A candidate's Balance Sheet fails to tally by exactly ₹36,000, which is the amount of an adjustment for outstanding wages given in the question. Explain what has almost certainly gone wrong, why the difference equals the adjustment exactly, and set out a systematic check that would prevent this class of error.

Accepted Answer

What has gone wrong. The adjustment has been given only one of its two effects. Outstanding wages of ₹36,000 should be added to wages in the Trading Account and simultaneously shown as a current liability in the Balance Sheet. The candidate has almost certainly done the first and omitted the second.

Why the difference equals the adjustment exactly. Adding ₹36,000 to wages increases the expenses charged, which reduces gross profit and therefore net profit by ₹36,000. That reduced profit flows into capital, so the liabilities-and-capital side of the Balance Sheet falls by ₹36,000. The corresponding liability that should have restored it was never entered, so the liabilities side is short by precisely the amount of the adjustment while the assets side is unchanged.

The converse error produces the same magnitude in the opposite direction. Had the candidate shown the liability but omitted to add the amount to wages, profit would be overstated by ₹36,000 and the liabilities side would exceed the assets side by that amount.

This is why a tally difference exactly equal to an adjustment figure is diagnostic. It points immediately at a half-applied adjustment rather than at an arithmetical error, and finding it takes seconds rather than a full recomputation.

A systematic check to prevent it.

Before preparing any statement, write the adjustments out as a numbered list in the margin of the answer book, leaving two boxes beside each.

Apply the governing rule: an item appearing inside the trial balance is given effect once, because the trial balance figure already reflects one side of the transaction. An item appearing only in the adjustments is given effect twice, because neither side has yet been recorded.

As each effect is entered, tick its box. An adjustment with one box ticked at the end of the question is an incomplete adjustment.

Before closing, verify that every adjustment has both boxes ticked. This takes about a minute and catches the largest single category of lost marks in final accounts questions.

Where the statement still does not tally, apply the standard diagnostics: a difference equal to a figure in the question suggests an omission; twice a figure suggests a wrong side; divisibility by nine suggests transposed digits. And if it cannot be found within the question's time budget, complete the statement, disclose the difference honestly rather than inserting an unexplained plug, and move on — the treatment and computation marks throughout remain available on the visible working.

Question 13

Explain what an accommodation bill is, how it differs from a trade bill, and how the parties account for it. Discuss also why the distinction matters to an auditor.

Nature of an accommodation bill.

A trade bill arises out of a genuine sale of goods or supply of services on credit. The instrument documents an existing debt: the acceptor owes the drawer because goods have passed, and the bill merely gives that debt a negotiable form.

An accommodation bill arises out of no underlying transaction at all. One party draws and another accepts purely so that the bill can be discounted with a bank and cash raised on the strength of their combined credit. Nothing has been sold; the parties have lent each other their names rather than any money.

Accounting where one party is accommodated.

Suppose A draws on B for ₹1,00,000 solely for A's accommodation, B accepting to oblige. A discounts the bill for, say, ₹96,000 and uses the money. Before maturity A must remit the full ₹1,00,000 to B so that B can meet the bill, since B never owed anything.

A's books: on drawing, B Dr. / To Bills Receivable is not the position — A records Bills Receivable Dr. ₹1,00,000 / To B ₹1,00,000; on discounting, Bank Dr. ₹96,000 and Discount Dr. ₹4,000 / To Bills Receivable ₹1,00,000; before maturity, B Dr. ₹1,00,000 / To Bank ₹1,00,000 on remitting the funds.
B's books mirror these: on acceptance, A Dr. ₹1,00,000 / To Bills Payable ₹1,00,000; on receiving the remittance, Bank Dr. ₹1,00,000 / To A ₹1,00,000; on maturity, Bills Payable Dr. ₹1,00,000 / To Bank ₹1,00,000.

B bears no cost, and the discounting charge of ₹4,000 falls on A, who obtained the money.

Where the bill is for mutual accommodation, the proceeds are shared in an agreed ratio and the discounting charge is shared in the same ratio, each party bearing the cost of the money it actually received. On maturity each contributes its share.

Why the distinction matters to an auditor.

An accommodation bill creates a real liability with no corresponding asset behind it. The acceptor is fully liable to a holder in due course, who takes the instrument free of defects in title and can enforce it regardless of the absence of consideration between the original parties. So B, who received nothing, can be compelled to pay in full if A fails to remit.

This makes accommodation bills a means of window dressing and of concealed borrowing. Bills Receivable in the balance sheet ordinarily signal debts arising from sales, and a reader assumes trading behind them. Accommodation bills inflate that figure with claims representing no sale at all, so the apparent turnover and liquidity of the enterprise are overstated.

The practice can also disguise circular financing between related parties, where the same funds are recycled between concerns to make each appear to be trading.

The auditor's concern is therefore twofold: whether the bills recorded represent genuine trade debts, tested by tracing them to the underlying sales, and whether contingent liabilities on bills discounted have been properly disclosed, since a discounted bill remains a liability of the drawer if the acceptor dishonours it.

Question 14

A trader maintaining incomplete records is advised by his banker to convert to double entry. Explain what he loses by remaining on incomplete records, what the conversion involves, and which figures he must be able to establish for the conversion to be possible.

What incomplete records cost him.

Incomplete records is not an alternative system but the absence of one. The trader keeps a cash book and personal accounts of debtors and creditors, because those are needed to run the business day to day and because those parties chase him. He keeps no real or nominal accounts, because nobody does.

The consequences follow directly from what is missing. There is no trial balance, so arithmetical accuracy cannot be verified at all. There is no direct means of computing profit, because no nominal accounts exist to be closed. There is no gross profit, no expense analysis and no ratio that can be compared with another year, so the trader cannot tell whether his margin is falling or his expenses rising.

The records are unreliable for outside purposes: a lender cannot assess him, a tax authority will not accept the figures without scrutiny, and a prospective purchaser of the business has nothing to value. Fraud is difficult to detect because there is no independent check — the absence of a trial balance and of control accounts removes exactly the mechanisms by which errors and misappropriations are ordinarily revealed.

What conversion involves.

Conversion reconstructs the missing accounts so that full final accounts can be prepared. The technique is the recovery of unknown figures as balancing figures in accounts that can be rebuilt from surviving evidence.

A Total Debtors Account is reconstructed from opening and closing debtors, cash received, discount allowed, bad debts and sales returns, yielding credit sales as the balancing figure. A Total Creditors Account is reconstructed on the same principle, yielding credit purchases. The cash book supplies cash and bank movements directly. Expenses are derived from payments adjusted for opening and closing outstanding and prepaid amounts. A given gross profit ratio can supply whichever of sales, cost of goods sold or closing stock remains unknown. Opening and closing Statements of Affairs establish capital at both dates, which provides a check on the profit ultimately computed.

What he must be able to establish.

Opening and closing balances of every asset and liability, since these fix capital at both dates and provide the independent check. Complete cash and bank records, as these are the backbone of the reconstruction. Total cash received from debtors and total cash paid to creditors, without which neither control account can be built. Records of discounts allowed and received, bad debts written off, and returns in both directions, since each of these reduces a personal account without cash moving and omitting any of them distorts the balancing figure. A count and valuation of stock at both dates. And a reliable record of drawings, in cash and in goods, since unrecorded drawings understate profit and nothing in the method will reveal them.

Where these are available, conversion is possible and yields full final accounts. Where they are not, only the Statement of Affairs method remains available, producing a single profit figure whose reliability depends entirely on the estimates of assets and liabilities at the two dates.

Question 15

Explain how the matching concept determines the treatment of outstanding expenses, prepaid expenses, accrued income, income received in advance, closing stock and depreciation in final accounts. Show that all six are the same idea applied to different items.

Accepted Answer

Matching requires that the expenses of a period be set against the revenues of that same period, so that the profit reported measures what the period actually earned. Every one of the six adjustments is that requirement applied to a different kind of item, and each corrects a mismatch between when cash moved and when the benefit or obligation arose.

Outstanding expenses. A service has been received in this period but not yet paid for — wages for March paid in April. The benefit belongs to this period, so the cost is charged here and the unpaid obligation is shown as a current liability. Charging it in April instead would report this period's revenue without the cost of earning it.

Prepaid expenses. Cash has left in this period for a benefit belonging to the next — insurance paid in March covering April onwards. The cost is removed from this period's charge and carried forward as a current asset, to be charged when the benefit is consumed.

Accrued income. Revenue has been earned in this period but not received — interest earned but not yet credited. It is brought into this period's income and shown as a current asset, because the earning event has occurred and a claim exists.

Income received in advance. Cash has arrived for a service not yet rendered — rent received for the following quarter. It is removed from this period's income and shown as a current liability, since the enterprise still owes the service and has not yet earned the money.

Closing stock. Goods have been purchased and paid for but not sold. Their cost helped earn no revenue this period, so it must not be charged against this period's sales. Crediting closing stock in the Trading Account removes that cost and carries it forward as an asset, to be charged in the period the goods are sold.

Depreciation. An asset was bought once but earns revenue across several periods. Charging its whole cost to the year of purchase would burden that year with a cost incurred for the benefit of many, and would leave later years reporting revenue with no charge for the asset producing it. Depreciation allocates the depreciable amount across the benefiting periods.

The common structure. In every case there are two dates — when cash moved and when the benefit or obligation arose — and matching requires the accounts to follow the second, not the first. The adjustment moves the amount to the correct period, and because every such move affects both a nominal account and a balance sheet item, each adjustment necessarily has two effects.

That last observation is not merely theoretical. The double effect of every adjustment is a consequence of matching operating within double entry, and understanding it is what makes the mechanical check — trial balance items once, adjustment-only items twice — something a candidate can reconstruct rather than memorise.
