(a) 20.

Part = (rate/100) × whole = (40/100) × 50 = 20 students. So 20 opted for science.

Question 2

Caselet: A sum of ₹1,200 is divided between A and B in the ratio 2 : 3.
What is B's share?
(a) ₹720 (b) ₹480 (c) ₹600 (d) ₹800

Accepted Answer

(a) ₹720.

Total parts = 2 + 3 = 5. B's share = (3/5) × 1200 = ₹720. (A gets the remaining ₹480.)

Question 3

Caselet: A batsman scored 40, 50 and 60 runs in three consecutive innings.
What is his average score per innings?
(a) 50 (b) 45 (c) 55 (d) 60

Accepted Answer

(a) 50.

Average = sum ÷ count = (40 + 50 + 60) ÷ 3 = 150 ÷ 3 = 50 runs per innings.

Question 4

Caselet: A shop's monthly sales rose from ₹80,000 in May to ₹1,00,000 in June.
By what percentage did sales increase?
(a) 25% (b) 20% (c) 30% (d) 15%

Accepted Answer

(a) 25%.

Increase = 1,00,000 − 80,000 = ₹20,000. Percentage increase = (20,000 / 80,000) × 100 = 25%.

Question 5

Caselet: A company sold 120 units in Q1, 150 in Q2, 180 in Q3 and 150 in Q4.
How many units did it sell in the whole year?
(a) 600 (b) 550 (c) 620 (d) 580

Accepted Answer

(a) 600.

Total = 120 + 150 + 180 + 150 = 600 units for the year.

Question 6

Caselet: In a survey of 300 people, those who preferred tea to coffee were in the ratio 7 : 5.
How many preferred tea?
(a) 175 (b) 125 (c) 150 (d) 210

Accepted Answer

(a) 175.

Total parts = 7 + 5 = 12. Tea preferrers = (7/12) × 300 = 175. (Coffee = 125.)

Question 7

Caselet: A product priced at ₹500 has its price first increased by 20% and then reduced by 10%.
What is the final price?
(a) ₹540 (b) ₹550 (c) ₹500 (d) ₹530

Accepted Answer

(a) ₹540.

After a 20% rise: 500 × 1.20 = ₹600. After a 10% cut: 600 × 0.90 = ₹540. Successive changes must be applied one after the other, not added.

Question 8

Caselet: A family's average monthly income is ₹25,000 for the first 4 months and ₹28,000 for the next 8 months.
What is its average monthly income for the whole year?
(a) ₹27,000 (b) ₹26,500 (c) ₹26,000 (d) ₹27,500

Accepted Answer

(a) ₹27,000.

Total = 4 × 25,000 + 8 × 28,000 = 1,00,000 + 2,24,000 = ₹3,24,000. Average = 3,24,000 ÷ 12 = ₹27,000. A weighted average, not a simple mean of 25,000 and 28,000.
