Why does the poem end with 'I don't know' instead of a clear answer about what the world is?

Step 1 — Each previous stage gave a clear but WRONG answer. The bird was certain the world was shell, then straw, then leaves — and each time it was wrong because its perspective was limited.

Step 2 — True wisdom means recognising the limits of your knowledge. The bird has grown enough to understand that the world is too vast for any single creature to fully comprehend.

Step 3 — The addition of 'and neither do my neighbours' is crucial. Even adult birds — 'grown-up labours' — don't have all the answers. The poem normalises not knowing.

Step 4 — This is a more mature answer than any of the bird's earlier certainties. 'I don't know' is the wisest statement in the poem.
