Why this chapter matters in XAT
CR strips away everything but pure argument structure — no passage, no vocabulary needed, just a short claim and five options. XAT's fifth option routinely adds a third defensible-sounding distractor beyond the usual two obvious discards: a statement that is true and topically related but doesn't actually touch the argument's logic. The negation test cuts through this reliably, and it is the highest-leverage single technique in the whole VA&LR section because it transfers directly to Decision Making's caselets.

Critical Reasoning — XAT Verbal & Logical Ability

Every CR argument XAT gives you is a small, self-contained machine: stated premises feed in, a conclusion comes out, and somewhere in between an unstated assumption is doing real work holding the two together. Your job is never to agree or disagree with the conclusion — it is to describe exactly how the machine is built, and notice precisely what would break it or keep it running. With five options instead of four, at least two of them will be built to sound like they do that.


1. What XAT actually asks

Critical Reasoning arguments are short — typically three to five sentences — followed by a single question with five options. There is no passage to hold in memory the way RC demands; the whole argument sits in front of you at once. Coaching-analysis of recent papers puts CR at roughly 4-7 of VA&LR's 26 questions, sometimes grouped with Verbal Reasoning in post-exam breakdowns since both draw on argument-evaluation skill (see docs/exam-briefs/xat-2026-brief.md for the section's overall structure).

The fifth option is what separates XAT CR from a standard GMAT-style drill. A four-option CR question usually has one clearly right answer, one near-miss, and two easy discards. XAT routinely adds a third defensible-sounding option — often one that is true and topically related but does not actually touch the argument's logic. Learning to discard that specific kind of option, not just the two obviously wrong ones, is most of this chapter.


2. The vocabulary of an argument

Every CR question rests on four building blocks. Confusing any two is the fastest route to a wrong answer, because each question type asks about exactly one of the four.

The habit worth building: before reading the options, mentally label the premise and conclusion in the argument itself. Most wrong answers in this chapter happen because the premise and conclusion were never separated, and the whole paragraph was read as one undifferentiated block of "things the author said."

4. The negation test — the single most reliable technique

Take an option, negate it, and check whether the argument's conclusion collapses. If negating a statement destroys the argument, that statement was an assumption the argument depended on. If negating it leaves the conclusion just as believable, it was never an assumption — just a true-sounding, irrelevant fact, which is exactly the kind of option XAT's fifth slot is built to hold.

  1. Identify the conclusion and the premise(s) offered for it.
  2. For each option, imagine it is false instead of true.
  3. Ask: does the conclusion still follow from the premises if this option is false?
  4. If no, the option was necessary — it is the assumption. If yes, it is a distractor, however reasonable it sounds.

Strengthen and weaken options are mirror images of the assumption found this way: a statement that supports the assumption strengthens the argument, and one that attacks it weakens the argument.

Question 1 of 4

Q1 — Find the assumption. A city council argues: "Crime has fallen by 15% in the two years since we installed streetlights across the downtown area. Clearly, better lighting deters crime." Which of the following is an assumption the council's argument depends on?

(a) is true and irrelevant to whether lighting caused the drop. (c) is a scope claim the argument never makes — it only discusses downtown. (d) is a plausible general fact that doesn't address whether this specific drop was caused by lighting — this is the fifth-option trap: true, topically related, logically inert. (e) is process information about how the decision was made, not about whether the lighting caused the result. Answer: (b).

Q2 — Weaken. "Employees who work from home report higher job satisfaction than those who work in-office, according to a recent survey. The company should therefore allow all employees to work from home to boost morale." Which option most weakens this argument?

Solution. The argument assumes the surveyed employees represent the general workforce. (b) directly attacks that assumption — a self-selected sample of people who chose remote work will naturally report higher satisfaction with it, telling us little about employees who did not choose it.

(a) is a minor exception, not a structural attack. (c) actually supports remote work, the opposite of weakening. (d) is irrelevant to whether remote work causes satisfaction. (e) sounds like a methodological critique but doesn't specifically undermine the satisfaction-comparison being made — it's the fifth-option trap, plausible-sounding but not load-bearing. Answer: (b).

Q3 — Inference. "All members of the research team hold a PhD. Priya is not a member of the research team." Which of the following must be true?

(a) and (b) both assert something about Priya's PhD status the premises never support. (d) introduces a comparison with "other teams" never mentioned. (e) assumes a reason for her non-membership that is never stated — she could simply not have applied. Answer: (c).

Q4 — Paradox. "A new fitness app saw a 40% rise in downloads last quarter, yet the company's revenue from the app fell during the same period." Which of the following, if true, best explains this apparent contradiction?

Solution. The paradox is: more downloads, less revenue. (b) resolves it directly — if growth was concentrated in a free tier while paying subscribers fell, downloads and revenue can move in opposite directions without contradiction.

(a) explains a feature change but not the revenue gap. (c) would, if anything, deepen the puzzle (more spending, less revenue). (d) is a plausible side fact but doesn't specifically connect rising downloads to falling revenue. (e) describes engagement, not payment behaviour — it doesn't touch the revenue question at all. Answer: (b).


6. Common traps

  • Picking the option that is true and topically related, but logically inert — this is XAT's signature fifth-option trap, and it is why the negation test matters more here than in a four-option exam: applying it mechanically catches what "sounds reasonable" cannot.
  • Confusing a strengthener with a fact that is merely positive about the topic. An option can sound favourable to the argument's subject without supporting the specific logical link between premise and conclusion.
  • Picking an inference that requires an extra assumption. A true inference needs no additional information — if you find yourself adding "and probably" to justify an option, it isn't a valid inference.
  • Attacking the conclusion's truth instead of the argument's logic in flaw questions. XAT asks what is wrong with how the conclusion was reached, not whether you agree with it.
  • Choosing the most extreme weakener or strengthener when a milder, more precisely targeted option is available. The strongest logical fit, not the most dramatic-sounding option, is correct.
  • Forgetting that assumptions are usually mundane, not dramatic. The correct assumption is often an unglamorous "nothing else changed" or "this sample is representative," not an exciting claim.

7. When to guess, and why

Within your first 8 skips across all of Part 1 (shared across VA&LR, DM and QA&DI), a CR question where you cannot separate the last two options is a defensible one to skip for free.

Beyond your 8th skip, a blind 1-in-5 guess has an expected value of exactly 0 (0.2 × 1 − 0.8 × 0.25), while a blank costs -0.10 — so mark your best remaining guess rather than leave it empty. If you've eliminated even the obviously-wrong fifth option, your guess's expected value turns positive.

The extra, fifth option. A typical four-option CR question has one clear right answer and three discardable options. XAT routinely adds a third genuinely plausible distractor — a statement that's true and related to the topic but doesn't actually change the argument's logic when tested. The negation test is what reliably separates it from the real assumption or weakener.

It's most direct for find-the-assumption, but it helps strengthen/weaken indirectly: once you've identified the argument's core assumption via negation, strengthen options become 'supports that assumption' and weaken options become 'attacks that assumption' — the same underlying gap, viewed from two directions.

CR arguments have a determinate, gettable answer once you correctly map premise/conclusion/assumption — it's closed-form logic. Decision Making caselets often have no single algorithmically correct answer and instead test which option best balances competing, legitimate considerations. CR practice sharpens the argument-evaluation instinct DM draws on, but DM should never be approached as if it has CR's kind of determinate logic.

Read the argument first, label its premise and conclusion, THEN read the question stem and options. Reading the stem first can bias you toward skimming the argument for the 'expected' answer type rather than actually mapping its structure.

Apply the negation test only to options that survive an initial relevance check — discard anything obviously off-topic first, then negate the 2-3 remaining candidates. Running the full negation test on all five options every time is accurate but too slow for the section's pace.
