Why this chapter matters in WBCS
Two of the six compulsory Mains papers are language papers. They are descriptive, so structure, spelling and time management decide the marks, and weekly practice is the only route.

The English and Bengali Language Papers: Letter, Précis, Composition, Translation — WBCS

Weightage: The Mains has a compulsory language paper (Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, Nepali or Santali) and a compulsory English paper, each of 200 marks and three hours. The Prelims also has a 25-mark English Composition section. Sources differ on how language-paper marks enter the merit total, so confirm the treatment, and any qualifying minimum, on the current notification.

1. Why these papers need steady practice

They are descriptive, so they reward practice and are hard to improve by reading alone. Candidates who treat them as easy lose marks to weak structure and spelling. Plan to write a task a day in the last two months.

2. The four tasks

The Commission prescribes the tasks and word limits, but not the marks of each task, so allocate time evenly and finish all four.

  • Letter or report writing (পত্রলিখন, প্রতিবেদন): a letter of about 150 words or a report of about 200 words.
  • Précis writing (সারাংশ): cut a passage to about a third.
  • Composition (প্রবন্ধ রচনা): an essay on a contemporary or social theme.
  • Translation (অনুবাদ): into the language of the paper.

3. Letters and reports

Letter to the editor or an official. Use the standard parts: sender's address, date, addressee, subject line, salutation, body in three short paragraphs, closing and name. State the purpose in the subject line and keep the tone formal.

Report. Use a heading, a place and date line, and a body of what, where, when, who, why and what next. Keep to facts and write in the past tense for events.

4. Précis

  1. Read twice and underline the central idea.
  2. Drop examples, repetition and quotations.
  3. Write in your own words, in the third person and in indirect speech.
  4. Cut to about one-third, and give a title if the paper asks.
  5. Add no opinion of your own.

In Bengali, learn the difference between সারাংশ (summary of the passage) and সারমর্ম (the essence or moral of a poem or passage).

5. Composition

Use opening, three body paragraphs and a close. Choose a topic where you have examples, such as water, education, technology or the environment, and give each paragraph one point and one example. Plain language is safer than ornate language.

In Bengali, do not mix the two styles: সাধু ভাষা (formal literary form) and চলিত ভাষা (standard colloquial form). Pick চলিত unless told otherwise and hold to it.

6. Translation

Translate meaning, not word by word. Keep natural order in the target language, and match tense, number and person. For English into Bengali, the verb comes at the end of the sentence. Practise both directions, and prepare standard official terms.

7. Bengali grammar essentials

The language paper tests rules you can learn:

  • বর্ণমালা (alphabet): 11 vowels (স্বরবর্ণ) and 39 consonants (ব্যঞ্জনবর্ণ), 50 letters in all.
  • সন্ধি (euphonic junction): three kinds, স্বরসন্ধি, ব্যঞ্জনসন্ধি and বিসর্গসন্ধি.
  • সমাস (compound): six main kinds, দ্বন্দ্ব, তৎপুরুষ, কর্মধারয়, বহুব্রীহি, দ্বিগু, অব্যয়ীভাব.
  • কারক (case relation): six, কর্তা, কর্ম, করণ, সম্প্রদান, অপাদান, অধিকরণ.
  • বাগধারা (idioms) and প্রবাদ (proverbs): learn meaning and a use.
  • বানান (spelling): a regular source of lost marks.

Learn each rule with three examples and test yourself in writing.

8. English essentials

For the English paper and the Prelims section, revise tenses, articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, direct and indirect speech, voice and common errors, then idioms and one-word substitutes. Read a good newspaper editorial daily for style.

9. A weekly plan

  • Two letters or reports, one in each language.
  • Two précis, one in each language.
  • One essay.
  • One translation each way.
  • Twenty minutes of grammar.

Mark your work against a model or ask a mentor, and rewrite weak pieces.

Common traps WBCS sets here

  • Treating the papers as easy. Marks go on structure and spelling.
  • Mixing সাধু and চলিত. Choose one style.
  • Writing a précis as long as the passage. Cut to one-third.
  • Adding opinion to a précis. It must reflect the passage only.
  • Word-for-word translation. It produces unnatural sentences.

Memory aids

  • "11 and 39 make 50": Bengali letters.
  • "Read twice, cut to a third, own words": the précis rule.
  • "What, where, when, who, why, next": the report body.

Summary

The two language papers carry 200 marks each and test letter or report writing, précis, composition and translation. A method for each task and steady weekly practice with self-marking are enough for most candidates.

Bengali grammar adds learnable lists of sandhi, samasa and karaka. Confirm how the marks count on the current notification.

Exam protocol

  • Finish all four tasks in each paper.
  • Hold one style, chalit or sadhu, throughout.
  • Revise the grammar lists before the exam.
