Literature, Arts and Heritage of West Bengal — WBCS
Weightage: Culture and heritage appear in the WBCS Prelims through History, Current Events and General Studies, and in Mains General Studies Paper I as the "Indian culture" thread. Recognitions such as UNESCO listings change, so confirm any recent addition on a current source before the exam.
1. Learn it as four shelves
Group the topic into literature, visual arts and architecture, performing and folk arts, and recognitions (UNESCO and GI tags). Each shelf has a few anchor names.
2. Literature: early and medieval
- Charyapada: the oldest known Bengali songs, discovered in Nepal by Haraprasad Shastri in 1907.
- Chandidas and the Vaishnava padavali poets, with the Srikrishnakirtan as a key early work.
- Mangalkavya: narrative poems in praise of local deities, such as Manasamangal and Chandimangal.
- Krittibas Ojha's Bengali Ramayana (15th century) and Kashiram Das's Mahabharata.
- Bharatchandra's Annadamangal (18th century), a court poem.
In 2024, Bengali was given classical language status, along with Marathi, Pali, Prakrit and Assamese.
3. Literature: modern
- Michael Madhusudan Dutt wrote Meghnad Badh Kavya (1861) in blank verse.
- Bankim Chandra Chatterjee wrote the early novels Durgeshnandini (1865) and Anandamath (1882).
- Rabindranath Tagore won the 1913 Nobel Prize for Gitanjali, the first non-European Nobel laureate in Literature. He wrote the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
- Kazi Nazrul Islam, the "rebel poet", wrote Bidrohi (1922).
- Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay (Pather Panchali) and Jibanananda Das shaped the 20th century.
4. Visual arts and architecture
- Terracotta temples of Bishnupur, built under the Malla kings, in the 17th and 18th centuries, with rasmancha and jor-bangla styles.
- Kalighat paintings, bold watercolours of the 19th century sold near the Kalighat temple.
- The Bengal School of Abanindranath Tagore and Nandalal Bose, a nationalist art movement.
- Colonial Calcutta: the Victoria Memorial (completed 1921), the Indian Museum (1814, the oldest in the country), Howrah Bridge and the Writers' Building.
- Textiles: Baluchari and Dhaniakhali saris, Jamdani and Tangail weaves.
5. Performing and folk arts
- Baul singers, wandering mystics whose tradition was listed by UNESCO as intangible heritage in 2008.
- Chhau of Purulia, a masked martial dance, which UNESCO listed in 2010 as part of the Chhau dance family.
- Jatra, the folk theatre of Bengal, Gambhira and Bhatiyali boat songs.
- Rabindrasangeet and Nazrulgeeti, two song traditions.
6. Santiniketan and Visva-Bharati
Rabindranath Tagore began his school at Santiniketan in 1901, and Visva-Bharati was founded in 1921. Its open-air classes and mix of arts and learning is a model of an alternative education. Santiniketan was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.
7. Other recognitions
- UNESCO World Heritage: the Sundarbans National Park (1987), the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (1999, part of the Mountain Railways of India) and Santiniketan (2023).
- Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed as intangible heritage in 2021.
- Geographical Indications include Darjeeling tea (the first GI in India, 2004) and the Banglar Rasogolla (2017).
8. Cinema
Satyajit Ray made Pather Panchali (1955) and received an honorary Oscar in 1992. Ray, Ritwik Ghatak and Mrinal Sen form the great trio of Bengali parallel cinema.
9. Heritage and administration
Heritage bodies include the Archaeological Survey of India circles in Kolkata, the state's Directorate of Archaeology, and the Kolkata Municipal Corporation for heritage buildings. A good Mains answer on heritage should add a threat, such as neglect of terracotta temples, and a protection step, such as listing and community care.
Common traps WBCS sets here
- Giving Tagore's Nobel year as 1910. It was 1913.
- Attributing the Charyapada to Chandidas. It is Pala-age Buddhist verse.
- Placing Bishnupur's temples under the Palas. They were built under the Mallas.
- Mixing the UNESCO years. Sundarbans 1987, Darjeeling railway 1999, Santiniketan 2023.
- Calling Nazrul a Nobel laureate. Tagore is the Bengali Nobel laureate in Literature.
Memory aids
- "1913 Tagore, 1922 Nazrul": two poets.
- "1987, 1999, 2023": UNESCO World Heritage years in Bengal.
