Weightage: 6–7 questions — Environment's biggest single chapter, since protected area categories, IUCN status, and flagship species facts recur across a large share of the paper's environment questions.

1. Ecosystem structure and energy flow

An ecosystem comprises biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) components interacting as a functional unit. Trophic levels: producers (autotrophs, chiefly green plants, fix energy via photosynthesis) → primary consumers (herbivores) → secondary consumers (primary carnivores) → tertiary consumers (secondary carnivores/apex predators) → decomposers (bacteria/fungi, recycle nutrients from dead organic matter at every level).

10% Law (Lindeman's Law): only about 10% of energy at one trophic level transfers to the next; ~90% is lost as heat (respiration), limiting most food chains to 3-5 trophic levels — this is why apex predators (tigers, lions) are always relatively FEW in number compared to herbivores, since very little energy remains by the top trophic level.

2. Levels of biodiversity and India's hotspots

Three levels: Genetic diversity (variation within a species); Species diversity (variety of species in a region); Ecosystem diversity (variety of habitats/ecological processes).

Biodiversity hotspots — regions with exceptionally high species richness AND endemism, facing significant habitat loss threat (a concept developed by Norman Myers). India has FOUR biodiversity hotspots: the Himalaya, the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, the Indo-Burma region, and Sundaland (Nicobar Islands).

3. IUCN Red List — conservation status categories

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) maintains the Red List, categorising species by extinction risk, in DESCENDING order of threat: Extinct (EX)Extinct in the Wild (EW)Critically Endangered (CR)Endangered (EN)Vulnerable (VU)Near Threatened (NT)Least Concern (LC) — the three categories CR/EN/VU are collectively termed "threatened" categories.

A National Park, established under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, offers the strictest level of protection: no human activity of any kind is permitted within its boundaries — no grazing, no private property rights, no agriculture, and no forms of resource extraction, since the area is dedicated entirely to wildlife and habitat conservation. A Wildlife Sanctuary, established under the same 1972 Act, offers slightly less stringent protection: some restricted forms of human activity may be permitted within a Sanctuary, depending on specific notifications, which is the key practical difference from a National Park — and importantly, a Wildlife Sanctuary can later be upgraded to full National Park status if conservation authorities determine stricter protection is warranted. A Biosphere Reserve represents a fundamentally different and broader conservation concept, recognised internationally under UNESCO's Man and Biosphere Programme rather than purely under Indian wildlife law. These three major international environmental instruments are sometimes confused with one another because they all relate broadly to biodiversity and conservation, but each has a genuinely distinct and specific primary focus that UPSC tests precisely. CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, signed in 1973, focuses specifically and narrowly on regulating the INTERNATIONAL TRADE of endangered species and products derived from them — such as ivory from elephants or skins from big cats — through a permit-based system that categorises species into three Appendices based on how severely their trade needs to be restricted, with Appendix I representing the most critically threatened species, for which commercial international trade is generally banned outright except in narrow, exceptional circumstances. The Convention on Biological Diversity, or CBD, signed in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, has a considerably broader scope than CITES, built around three distinct pillars: the conservation of biological diversity generally, the sustainable use of its components (meaning using biological resources in ways that don't deplete them for future generations), and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources (an issue particularly relevant to bioprospecting and pharmaceutical research derived from wild species). India implements its CBD obligations domestically through the Biological Diversity Act of 2002, which established the National Biodiversity Authority. The Ramsar Convention, the oldest of the three, signed in 1971, has the narrowest and most specific focus of all: it deals exclusively with the conservation and sustainable use of WETLANDS specifically, designating internationally important wetland sites (called Ramsar Sites) for special protection and management attention, without addressing broader biodiversity trade or conservation issues beyond the wetland ecosystem context.

The 10% law, formulated by the ecologist Raymond Lindeman, describes a fundamental energetic constraint in how ecosystems function: at each successive step up a food chain, from producers to herbivores to carnivores, only roughly 10% of the energy available at one trophic level is successfully captured and converted into biomass at the next level, with the remaining approximately 90% lost, primarily as heat released during the metabolic process of respiration, along with smaller losses to incomplete digestion and energy that goes toward other biological maintenance functions rather than growth. This means that if a grassland ecosystem's plants (producers) capture a certain total amount of solar energy, only about a tenth of that energy becomes available to the herbivores that eat those plants, and only about a tenth of THAT smaller amount becomes available to the primary carnivores that eat the herbivores, and so on up the chain. By the time energy reaches an apex predator like a tiger, sitting at the top of a multi-level food chain, only a very small fraction of the original energy captured by plants remains available to support tiger biomass. This is precisely why a given ecosystem can typically support a very large number of plants, a smaller number of herbivores, and only a very small number of apex predators — the energy math simply doesn't allow for large predator populations, independent of any human-caused pressures like poaching or habitat destruction, which are separate, additional threats layered on top of this baseline ecological constraint. Understanding this mechanism helps explain why tiger conservation efforts, for instance, focus heavily on protecting large, intact habitat areas capable of supporting the full prey base needed to sustain even a modest tiger population, rather than simply protecting individual tigers in isolation.
