Weightage: 5–6 questions. International climate summit outcomes and India's domestic environmental Acts are the two dominant, frequently-refreshed question formats.
1. The greenhouse effect and global warming mechanism
Greenhouse effect (a NATURAL, essential process): certain atmospheric gases (greenhouse gases — GHGs) allow incoming shortwave solar radiation to pass through and reach Earth's surface, but ABSORB and RE-RADIATE outgoing longwave infrared radiation from the surface, trapping heat in the atmosphere — WITHOUT this natural effect, Earth's average surface temperature would be far too cold to support life as we know it.
Global warming (the PROBLEM): human activities (fossil fuel burning, deforestation, industrial processes) have significantly INCREASED atmospheric GHG concentrations beyond natural levels, intensifying the greenhouse effect and causing measurable warming of Earth's average surface temperature over the industrial era.
Major greenhouse gases and their sources: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) — fossil fuel combustion, deforestation; the most significant GHG by total contribution; Methane (CH4) — livestock digestion, rice paddies, landfills, natural gas leaks; a far more potent GHG per molecule than CO2 (though shorter atmospheric lifetime); Nitrous Oxide (N2O) — agricultural fertilisers, industrial processes; Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) — industrial/refrigerant use, ALSO responsible for stratospheric ozone depletion (a related but DISTINCT environmental problem — see the traps section).
Global Warming Potential (GWP): a measure comparing a gas's heat-trapping ability relative to CO2 (given a GWP of 1) over a specified time period — methane's GWP is significantly higher than CO2's per molecule, meaning smaller absolute quantities of methane cause disproportionately large warming effects.

"Common but differentiated responsibilities" (CBDR): a foundational principle in international climate negotiations, holding that while all countries share responsibility for addressing climate change, DEVELOPED countries (having historically emitted more GHGs during their industrialisation) bear a GREATER responsibility/burden for emission reductions and climate finance than developing countries.
3. India's climate commitments and domestic policy
India, as a Paris Agreement signatory, has submitted NDCs including targets on emissions intensity reduction (emissions per unit of GDP, allowing continued economic growth while reducing carbon intensity), non-fossil fuel-based electricity capacity expansion, and forest cover/carbon sink enhancement.
National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC): India's domestic climate strategy framework, comprising several "National Missions" covering solar energy, energy efficiency, sustainable habitat, water, Himalayan ecosystem sustainability, green India (afforestation), sustainable agriculture, and strategic knowledge for climate change.
International Solar Alliance (ISA): launched jointly by India and France (2015, at COP21 in Paris) — an international coalition of solar-resource-rich countries promoting solar energy deployment, headquartered in India (Gurugram).

Common traps UPSC sets here
- The greenhouse effect itself is NATURAL and beneficial; GLOBAL WARMING is the problem of an INTENSIFIED/enhanced greenhouse effect due to human activity — don't describe the greenhouse effect itself as inherently harmful; it's essential for life, and the issue is its human-caused intensification.
- Ozone layer depletion (caused by CFCs) is a DIFFERENT environmental problem from global warming/greenhouse effect (caused by CO2/methane/etc.), even though CFCs contribute to BOTH problems — don't conflate the Montreal Protocol (ozone-specific) with UNFCCC/Kyoto/Paris (climate-specific) instruments.
- The Kyoto Protocol bound ONLY developed countries to emission targets; the Paris Agreement covers BOTH developed and developing countries — a fundamental structural difference frequently tested, reflecting an evolution in how international climate responsibility is distributed.
- NDCs under the Paris Agreement are VOLUNTARY/self-determined, NOT internationally imposed binding targets — a frequently tested nuance about the Paris Agreement's "bottom-up" structure, contrasted with Kyoto's more top-down binding targets for developed countries.

- Treat ozone depletion (CFCs, Montreal Protocol) and global warming (GHGs, UNFCCC/Kyoto/Paris) as two related but SEPARATE environmental problems requiring separate international instruments — never conflate the two policy tracks.
- For domestic Indian environmental law questions, match each Act to its single clearest focus word (Water/Forest/Air/Environment-umbrella/Biodiversity) and its enactment year, using the Bhopal-1986 pairing as an anchor point for the broader timeline.
