The Tamil Eligibility Test: Translation, Précis, Essay and Usage — TNPSC Group I Mains
Weightage: Paper I of the Mains is the Tamil Eligibility Test, 100 marks, set at SSLC standard, and qualifying: its marks are not added to your rank, but a minimum must be reached, reported as 40, before your General Studies papers are evaluated. Confirm the minimum and the task weights on the current notification.
1. Why this paper blocks strong candidates
The paper does not add to the merit total, so candidates postpone it. A candidate who scores well in the General Studies papers but misses the minimum here is not ranked. Treat it as a gate and practise weekly from the start.
2. The tasks in the paper
The Commission describes a practical language test, not a literature test. The tasks are:
- மொழிபெயர்ப்பு (translation): English to Tamil and Tamil to English.
- சுருக்கி வரைதல் (précis writing).
- பத்தியைப் படித்து விடையளித்தல் (comprehension).
- கட்டுரை (essay), including one connected to the Thirukkural, and social and environmental topics.
- அலுவலகக் கடிதம் (official letter).
- பிழை திருத்தம் (correction of errors) and use of Tamil in computing and law.
Marks printed against each task on the paper decide how to split your time.
3. Translation
Translate the meaning, not each word. Keep Tamil word order natural: the verb comes at the end. Match tense, number and gender in both directions.
For official terms, learn standard equivalents: கணினி (computer), இணையம் (internet), மின்னஞ்சல் (email), அரசாணை (government order). Practise a short passage each way every week.
4. Précis and comprehension
Précis. Cut the passage to about one-third. Keep the central idea, drop examples and repetition, and write in the third person in simple sentences. A heading helps.
Comprehension. Read the passage twice, once for the idea and once for detail. Answer in your own words, in full sentences, and keep to the marks each answer carries.
5. The essay
Plan a short outline: opening, three body points, close. A Thirukkural essay begins with the verse's meaning, explains the idea, gives a modern example and ends with a lesson. A social or environmental essay follows the same shape with causes, effects and remedies.
Choose plain, accurate Tamil. A clean essay in simple language scores better than an ornate one with errors.
6. The official letter
A formal letter has fixed parts:
| Part | Tamil term |
|---|---|
| Sender | அனுப்புநர் |
| Addressee | பெறுநர் |
| Subject | பொருள் |
| Salutation | ஐயா / அம்மையீர் |
| Body | In short paragraphs |
| Closing | இப்படிக்கு (yours faithfully) |
The subject line should state the purpose in one line. Keep dates, place and signature in order.
7. Grammar essentials
The traditional five divisions of Tamil grammar are எழுத்து (letters), சொல் (words), பொருள் (meaning), யாப்பு (prosody) and அணி (figures). For this paper, learn the first two best.
- Letters: 12 vowels, 18 consonants, 1 aytham and 216 combined letters, 247 in all.
- Consonant groups: the six vallinam (க ச ட த ப ற), the six mellinam (ங ஞ ண ந ம ன) and the six idaiyinam (ய ர ல வ ழ ள).
- Cases (வேற்றுமை): eight, from the first to the eighth, with the eighth being the vocative.
- Parts of speech: noun, verb, particle and qualifying word.
8. A weekly plan
- One translation each way.
- One précis and one comprehension passage.
- One essay and one letter.
- Twenty minutes on grammar and errors.
Mark your own work against a model, and correct spelling every time.
Common traps TNPSC sets here
- Treating the paper as optional. Failing it blocks your ranking.
- Translating word by word. It produces unnatural Tamil.
- Copying sentences from the passage. Use your own words.
- Writing a précis as long as the passage. Aim for one-third.
- Skipping the subject line in a letter. It carries marks.
Memory aids
- "Read twice, write short, own words": the comprehension rule.
- "Sender, addressee, subject": the letter order.
- "12, 18, 1, 216, 247": the letters of the Tamil alphabet.
Summary
The Tamil Eligibility Test is a 100-mark qualifying gate at SSLC standard. It tests translation, précis, comprehension, essay, official letters and usage.
Short weekly practice with self-marking is enough for most candidates, and grammar facts and letter formats are the most learnable parts.
Exam protocol
- Practise weekly from the start.
