Nuclear, Space, Energy and IT in Tamil Nadu — TNPSC Group I
Weightage: GS Paper II, Unit II (100 marks) covers "Role and impact of science and technology in the development of India": space research, nuclear technology, renewable energy, IT and e-governance. The national frame comes from the aliased UPSC CSE science chapters. Project status changes, so use the "as reported" hedge for anything that is under construction.
1. Why a state view helps
Tamil Nadu hosts national installations that the Commission can use as examples: a nuclear power plant, a fast-reactor programme, rocket propulsion facilities, and a large wind and solar fleet. Linking each to a place turns a general answer into a Tamil Nadu one.
2. Nuclear power
- Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli district uses Russian VVER-1000 reactors. Its first two units began operating in the 2010s, and further units are under construction under Indo-Russian cooperation. The plant drew local protests over safety in the early 2010s, a standard example of public trust in nuclear projects.
- Kalpakkam near Chennai houses the Madras Atomic Power Station, the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) and the 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), built by BHAVINI. The PFBR is the second stage of India's three-stage programme and is reported to be near commissioning, so confirm its current status.
Learn the three-stage programme in sequence: natural uranium and heavy water reactors, then fast breeder reactors, then thorium-based reactors.
3. Space
- ISRO Propulsion Complex, Mahendragiri in Tirunelveli district tests and works on liquid and cryogenic engines.
- Kulasekarapattinam in Thoothukudi district is the site for a new spaceport for small satellite launch vehicles, with the foundation stone laid in 2024. Its southern location suits launches towards the south polar route.
- Launches today occur at Sriharikota, which is in Andhra Pradesh, not Tamil Nadu.
Tamil scientists have led missions: M. Annadurai was project director of Chandrayaan-1, and P. Veeramuthuvel was project director of Chandrayaan-3, which landed in August 2023. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam of Rameswaram led missile and space programmes before becoming President.
4. Renewable energy
Tamil Nadu is among the leaders in installed wind power, with large wind farms such as Muppandal near Kanyakumari. The Palghat Gap and the southwest monsoon winds make this corridor suitable for it.
The Kamuthi solar power plant in Ramanathapuram (648 MW, commissioned 2016) was among the largest single-location solar plants at the time. A Mains answer should add that renewable energy brings grid-balancing challenges and the need for storage.
5. Electronics, IT and automobiles
- Chennai is a leading IT and services centre, with Tidel Park (2000) as an early park.
- Electronics manufacturing has grown around Sriperumbudur and Hosur, where mobile phone and component assembly clusters operate.
- Electric vehicles: the state has an EV policy, and EV plants operate near Hosur and Krishnagiri.
- Semiconductors and space start-ups are named in recent state policies.
6. Education and research institutions
IIT Madras (founded 1959 with West German assistance), Anna University (1978), the Central Leather Research Institute and the Madras Institute of Technology form the research base. The research park at IIT Madras hosts start-ups, and the state's startup mission supports new firms.
7. E-governance and Tamil computing
- e-Sevai centres deliver certificates and services.
- The Tamil Nadu e-Governance Agency runs shared platforms.
- Tamil99 keyboard standard and Unicode Tamil support made Tamil computing practical, and the Tamil Virtual Academy offers online courses.
For an e-governance answer, give benefits (speed, transparency, access) and limits (digital divide, data protection, cyber risk).
8. A Mains answer pattern
Use technology, example, benefit and risk. For example: nuclear power, Kudankulam, low-carbon baseload, safety and waste concerns.
Common traps TNPSC sets here
- Placing Sriharikota in Tamil Nadu. It is in Andhra Pradesh; Tamil Nadu's own spaceport is at Kulasekarapattinam.
- Confusing Kudankulam and Kalpakkam. Kudankulam is the Russian light-water plant; Kalpakkam has the fast breeder and IGCAR.
- Giving the PFBR as light-water. It is a fast breeder reactor.
- Naming Chandrayaan-3 as 2019. It landed in August 2023.
- Forgetting the risk in a technology answer. Always add one.
Memory aids
- "Kudankulam Russian, Kalpakkam breeder": the two nuclear sites.
- "Mahendragiri engines, Kulasekarapattinam launches": the two space sites.
- "Technology, example, benefit, risk": the answer frame.
Summary
Tamil Nadu's science profile includes the Kudankulam plant, the Kalpakkam fast-breeder programme, Mahendragiri propulsion and the planned Kulasekarapattinam spaceport. It leads in wind power and has large electronics, IT and EV clusters.
E-governance and Tamil computing add practical examples. Every answer should end with a risk or limit.
Exam protocol
- Link each technology to a Tamil Nadu place.
- Use "as reported" for projects under construction.
- Add one risk to every technology answer.
