CycleAnnual in intent, though cycles overlap: the 2024 recruitment ran its Prelims in February 2025 and Mains in mid-2025 (rescheduled amid protests, as reported) with results in October 2025 and interviews into January 2026, while a new 2026 recruitment was reported notified in May 2026 for about 600 posts, with Prelims scheduled for 29 November 2026 on published schedules. Confirm the live calendar on the Commission's site.
ModePrelims: OMR-based objective, 150 questions, 200 marks, 3 hours. Mains: pen-and-paper descriptive, four papers of 3 hours each, in Hindi or English (Paper IV in both languages). Interview: in-person personality and viva test.
EligibilityA bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Age is reckoned on a date fixed in each notification: about 21 to 40 with reservation-based relaxations. No cap on the number of attempts has been reported, so candidates may appear repeatedly within the age window. Confirm the reference date, relaxations and any attempt conditions on the current notification.
LanguagesHindi and English for the General Studies papers; Paper IV tests both languages and an essay in either
Selection intoRAS is the state's premier administrative service, with officers serving as Sub-Divisional Officers and rising to Additional Collectors and, through conferment, into the IAS. Published pay levels and in-hand figures differ across sources (some cite different Pay Levels of the 7th CPC matrix), so confirm the level from the notification and avoid relying on a cached figure.

⚡ What changed recently

  • RPSC revised the RAS syllabus and pattern in January 2026, the first major overhaul since 2013, with around a quarter of the syllabus changing. Units are now defined (Unit I, II, III) in each paper, Sports and Yoga was dropped as a syllabus section, the Rajasthan Examination Act, 2022 was added, and law and management-related content was widened.
  • Mains questions are now reported to be 5-mark (about 50 words) and 10-mark (about 150 words), with 2-mark questions removed. Paper IV was restructured as General Hindi (90 marks), General English (70) and an essay (40) on six themes.
  • Paper III's law strand now names the new criminal codes (BNS and BNSS, in force from 1 July 2024), the Rajasthan Tenancy Act 1955 and Land Revenue Act 1956, and central statutes such as RTI, the IT Act and the protective Acts for women, children and seniors.
  • Rajasthan's district map has changed twice in two years: 33 districts became 50 in 2023, and about 41 districts and seven divisions after nine new districts and three new divisions were dissolved in December 2024. Always quote the number with its year.
  • Office-holders change, so this hub teaches Rajasthan's institutions, statutes and dates rather than naming a sitting Governor or Chief Minister. Confirm current names independently before the exam.

Where your RAS score comes from

Prelims (150 objective questions, 200 marks) screens candidates into Mains and its marks do not count toward the final merit list. Mains is the scoring stage: four papers of 200 marks each and three hours each, all counting. Paper I covers History (Rajasthan, India and the world), Economics (India, the world and Rajasthan) and Sociology, Management, and Accounting and Auditing. Paper II covers Administrative Ethics, General Science and Technology, and Earth Science (world, India and Rajasthan). Paper III covers Polity, Governance and International Affairs, Public Administration, and Behaviour and Law. Paper IV is General Hindi, General English and an essay, a language paper outside this hub's chapter format. Every paper carries a Rajasthan strand, and RAS is distinctive for the amount of state content and for its non-UPSC subjects (management, accounting and auditing, behaviour, and law), which is why this hub has 13 state-specific chapters. The Commission publishes no unit-wise marks, so the marks shown are indicative. Click any block to open its chapters:

🎯 The most distinctly Rajasthan block of the exam. Learn integration as one line of seven dates, pair every movement with its region, leader and outcome, and give dates for battles.

🎯 Mostly pairing questions: form with place, fair with deity, work with author. Always give the year for a UNESCO inscription, and note that Prithviraj Raso's reliability is debated.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. The Rajput states, Mughal relations and Rajasthan's own history are in the state history chapter; use this chapter for the all-India frame.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. Rajasthan's 1857 outbreaks, peasant and tribal movements and Praja Mandals are in the state history chapter.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. Rajasthan's own seven-stage integration is in the state history chapter, and builds on this national account.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. Pair it with the Rajasthan art and culture chapter for the state examples RAS asks.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. RAS limits world history to the period up to 1991, so read the chapter with that boundary in mind.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS3. Read Rajasthan's economy against the national picture, and cover WTO, the World Bank and the IMF from the international-relations chapter.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS3. Rajasthan's crops, water and price policy are in the state economy chapter.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS3.

🎯 The most current-affairs-sensitive marks in Paper I. Label every projection as an estimate and every investment intent as an intent, and pair each crop, project and cluster with its place.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. The Rajasthan focus (tribes, customs, women's issues) is in the state society chapter.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS2.

🎯 Quote figures with the 2011 Census, pair each social evil with its law, and keep the Bhanwari Devi to POSH chain (1992, 1997, 2013) as one memory line.

🎯 This chapter is shared with MPPSC's GS IV Part B, so it is written to serve both syllabi. Cite the theorist and year for every theory, and use the marketing mix and SWOT explicitly, since RAS names them.

🎯 New to most candidates and expanded in the 2026 revision. Learn the debit-credit rules, three ratios and the audit-types table first, and separate financial, compliance and performance audit clearly.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS3. The syllabus is unusually broad, covering basic science, mRNA and CRISPR, cloud and blockchain, and space and defence, so read across the whole chapter.

🎯 One line of the syllabus names Rajasthan's science development; this chapter supplies the institutions, sites and platforms that answer it. Learn institution-place-function triples and the two Pokhran dates.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS1. RAS adds the Rajasthan strand in the two state chapters that follow.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS3.

🎯 Answer physiography region by region from west to east, group rivers by drainage system first, and pair every lake, soil and climate type with its region.

🎯 Minerals and protected areas are the most reliable pairings. Pair each mineral with its district and distinction, learn protected areas as place-species pairs, and date every count.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS2. RAS names the current groupings, so keep the latest summits and platforms up to date.

🎯 State numbers with their year (districts and divisions have changed), describe the Collector as revenue head, magistrate and development coordinator, and pair each reform statute with year and purpose.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE's Public Administration optional, minus the optional-specific answer-writing chapter. RAS's unit is much lighter than the optional, so treat the theory chapters as the core and the rest as depth.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS2. Add RPSC and the state's own bodies from the Rajasthan polity chapter.

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Mains GS2.

🎯 Six named topics, each answerable with a theorist and a clean structure. Give a public-administration example in every 10-mark answer and pair each problem with a remedy.

🎯 Give each Act as year, purpose, key machinery and one limitation. Cite section numbers only where you are sure, and remember Section 66A was struck down in 2015.

🎯 Answer with principles, not memorised sections: the four land laws in order (1952, 1955, 1956, 1973), why transfer is restricted, and the revenue ladder from patwari to the Board of Revenue at Ajmer.

🎯 Give the new BNS or BNSS number first and the old IPC or CrPC number only as a bridge, and distinguish related offences by their defining element (unlawful assembly against rioting).

🎯 Shared with UPSC CSE Prelims. Rajasthan history, art, culture and literature is the first section of the RAS Prelims, covered by the state history and culture chapters.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Roughly half of the General Studies syllabus is national and follows UPSC-style content, which is why this hub aliases those chapters. RAS differs in three ways: a Rajasthan strand runs through every paper, it tests subjects UPSC does not (management, accounting and auditing, behaviour, and specific state and central laws), and it uses shorter answers of about 50 and 150 words.

No. Prelims is a screening stage, and its marks are not added to the final merit list, which is Mains (800) plus Interview (100). Prelims does carry negative marking of one-third for each wrong answer.

About a quarter of the syllabus changed: units are now clearly defined, Sports and Yoga was dropped, the Rajasthan Examination Act 2022 was added, law and management content was widened, Mains questions moved to 5 and 10 marks, and Paper IV was restructured into Hindi, English and an essay. The state chapters in this hub follow the revised units.

Rajasthan had 33 districts, then 50 after 2023, and about 41 (with seven divisions) after December 2024 when several new districts and divisions were dissolved. Because the number has changed twice, always quote it with a year in your answer.

Office-holders change, and this content is written to stay accurate across those changes. The chapters teach the institutions, statutes and dates that carry the marks. Confirm current names from a live source close to your exam date.
