How NEET Chemistry Works — NEET Chemistry
Chemistry is the section that decides ranks quietly. It is not as feared as Physics nor as vast as Biology, and that is exactly why the toppers separate here: the marks are gettable, so everyone who prepares well gets them, and the small gaps show. The trick is to see Chemistry as three different subjects — Physical, Organic and Inorganic — each with its own logic and its own study method. Study each the way it wants to be studied and Chemistry becomes 180 of your most reliable marks. This chapter sets the method the rest of the section is built on.

Roughly 40% of NEET Chemistry comes almost verbatim from NCERT lines — including tables, exceptions and figure captions. Reading NCERT cover to cover is not optional; it is the single highest-yield thing you can do.
2. Three subjects, three methods
The commonest mistake is to study all of Chemistry the same way. It fails because the three streams reward opposite habits.
- Physical chemistry → practise, don't memorise. These are Physics-style problems: identify the quantity, pick the formula, compute. Mole concept underpins everything, so master it first. Drill numericals until each takes under a minute.
- Organic chemistry → understand the mechanism, then the reactions fall out. Once you understand inductive/resonance effects, electrophiles and nucleophiles, most reactions become predictable rather than memorised. Learn the reason a reaction goes, and named reactions become recall of a pattern, not a list.
- Inorganic chemistry → NCERT recall, ruthlessly. There is little to derive; it is facts, trends and exceptions. This is the fastest-to-answer, highest-accuracy stream — bank it with disciplined NCERT reading and trend logic.
3. The mole is the backbone
Almost every physical-chemistry calculation routes through the mole concept. If it is not automatic, everything downstream is slow.
- Avogadro's number particles per mole.
- Molar mass in g/mol equals the formula mass in u.
- At STP an ideal gas occupies 22.4 L/mol (0 °C, 1 atm) — a constant NEET tests every year.
- Concentration: molarity .
Every stoichiometry, empirical-formula, limiting-reagent and concentration problem begins by converting the given data to moles. Make that conversion reflexive and physical chemistry speeds up dramatically.
4. NCERT-first discipline wins the easy marks
Inorganic and factual-organic questions are decided before the exam, by how you read.
- Read NCERT line by line — the exceptions ("lithium is anomalous", "nitrogen does not form pentahalides", "fluorine has no positive oxidation state") are exactly what gets asked.
- Note every table and colour — flame colours, precipitate colours, oxide/hydroxide trends. These are direct one-mark recalls.
- Learn the named reactions with conditions (reagent, catalyst, temperature). NEET asks "which reagent converts A to B".
- Keep a one-page trend sheet per block (periodic trends, p-block anomalies) and revise it weekly.
5. Marking strategy: accuracy over adventure
With −1 for a wrong answer, Chemistry rewards discipline more than daring.
- Inorganic/NCERT-recall questions you know — answer them fast and bank them.
- For a numerical, if a quick unit or order-of-magnitude check contradicts your option, recompute — don't submit a slip.
- If you can eliminate two options on a reasoned basis, attempting is favourable on average; a genuine blank is better skipped.
- Budget roughly 35–45 minutes for Chemistry so Biology's 90 questions get their due; there is no sectional time limit.
6. The high-yield map

Organic and Inorganic together are ~60% of the section and are less calculation-heavy than physical — for most students they are where accuracy (and time saved) is highest. Do not neglect them for the "harder-looking" physical chapters.
7. Exam protocol
- Classify the question — physical (compute), organic (mechanism/reaction) or inorganic (recall)?
- For physical, convert given data to moles / SI first, then pick one formula.
- For organic, track the electron flow — where is the electrophile, where the nucleophile?
- For inorganic, trust your NCERT trend — answer and move on; don't overthink recall.
- Bank the fast recall marks first, then invest time in the calculations.
- Give Chemistry ~35–45 minutes — protect Biology's 90 questions.
