Geography — NDA General Knowledge
GK Geography rewards precise, closed-set recall more than any other GK sub-area — a river matched to its length, a state matched to its capital, a strait matched to the two coastlines it separates. Nothing here demands map-drawing or derivation; it demands that you never confuse one specific fact for a nearby, similar-sounding one. Indian Geography carries the most marks within this chapter, so build that base first, then layer Physical and World Geography on top.
1. What NDA actually asks
Weightage: 20% of General Knowledge — tied with History & Freedom Movement, behind only Physics (25%). GK is Part B of the GAT paper: 100 of the GAT's 150 questions, worth 400 of its 600 marks. A 20% share of GK Geography works out to roughly 20 of the 100 GK questions — 80 of the 400 GK marks. Every GAT question carries +4 for a correct answer and −1.3333 for a wrong one (1/3 of 4 marks); an unattempted question costs nothing.
Within this chapter, Indian Geography draws the most questions — physical divisions, rivers, monsoon, soils, agriculture, minerals, states and infrastructure alone account for roughly half this chapter's marks — while Physical Geography and World Geography basics share the rest. Geography questions in NDA GK come in three recurring shapes:
- Factual recall — name a river's length, a state's capital, a mineral's leading producer, a strait's location.
- Correct-statement identification — four statements about the same topic (weathering vs. erosion, a river's course, a soil type), only one scientifically or factually accurate.
- Close-pair discrimination — two genuinely similar facts (Godavari vs. Krishna's length, Gandhinagar vs. Ahmedabad as Gujarat's capital, a major port vs. the port with the largest cargo volume) offered against each other as the correct answer and its trap.
This sits at CBSE Class 9–11 NCERT geography level — the physical processes, India's map, and world basics a generalist officer is expected to know cold, not university-level physical geography or exhaustive world capitals trivia.
2. The Earth in space — solar system, motions, latitude & longitude
The solar system. The Sun sits at the centre; eight planets orbit it in order of distance — Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Mercury is smallest and closest to the Sun; Jupiter is the largest planet. Venus, not Mercury, is the hottest planet on average (~465°C) despite being farther from the Sun — its thick carbon-dioxide atmosphere traps heat through a runaway greenhouse effect, while airless Mercury has no atmosphere to retain the heat it receives and swings wildly between extremes.
Earth's two motions:
- Rotation — Earth spins on its own axis, west to east, once every ~24 hours, causing day and night and governing local time.
- Revolution — Earth orbits the Sun once every ~365.25 days on an elliptical path. Combined with the 23.5° tilt of Earth's axis, this causes the seasons: the Northern Hemisphere's summer solstice (~21 June, longest day) and winter solstice (~22 December, shortest day), with the equinoxes (~21 March, ~23 September) giving near-equal day and night everywhere.
Latitude and longitude. Latitude is measured 0°–90° north or south of the Equator and determines climate zones; longitude is measured 0°–180° east or west of the Prime Meridian (Greenwich). Since Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours, each 15° of longitude equals 1 hour of time difference (1° = 4 minutes). The Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N) passes through eight Indian states — Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram.
India's Standard Meridian is 82.5°E, passing through Mirzapur (Uttar Pradesh), and defines Indian Standard Time (IST = GMT +5:30). India uses a single time zone despite spanning nearly 30° of longitude (roughly 68°E to 97°E) — a natural difference of about two hours between sunrise in Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh.
3. Earth's interior, rocks, minerals & landforms
Earth's interior has three broad layers: the thin outer crust (oceanic and continental), the thick, semi-solid mantle (source of magma), and the core — a liquid outer core and solid inner core, both mostly iron-nickel, at the highest temperature and pressure.
The three rock types:

These three types continuously transform into one another — the rock cycle.
Weathering, erosion and deposition are three distinct, often-confused processes:
- Weathering — the in-situ breakdown of rock by physical, chemical or biological action, with no transport of the broken material.
- Erosion — breakdown plus transport of material by an agent: rivers, wind, glaciers or sea waves.
- Deposition — the dropping of transported material, building new landforms (deltas, sand dunes, moraines).
River erosion produces V-shaped valleys and waterfalls in its upper course, meanders and oxbow lakes in its middle course, and deltas at its mouth. Wind erosion in deserts produces sand dunes; glaciers carve U-shaped valleys; coastal erosion produces cliffs, while coastal deposition builds beaches and spits.
4. Atmosphere, climate types & ocean currents
Layers of the atmosphere (lowest to highest): the troposphere (where weather occurs, up to ~12 km), the stratosphere (contains the ozone layer, which absorbs harmful UV radiation, ~12–50 km), the mesosphere (coldest layer; meteors burn up here), and the thermosphere (ionosphere; reflects radio waves, hosts the auroras).
Weather is the short-term atmospheric condition at a place; climate is the average weather of a region over a long period (30+ years). Broad global climate types include equatorial (hot and wet year-round — Amazon, Congo basins), tropical monsoon (India's pattern — a distinct wet and dry season), hot desert (hot and dry — Sahara), Mediterranean (hot dry summers, mild wet winters), and polar/tundra (cold year-round).
Ocean currents move heat around the globe. Warm currents flow from the equator toward the poles — the Gulf Stream warms north-western Europe (keeping the UK and Norway far milder than their latitude would suggest), and the Kuroshio Current warms Japan's eastern coast. Cold currents flow from the poles toward the equator — the Labrador Current cools eastern Canada, and the Peru (Humboldt) Current cools South America's western coast and contributes to the aridity of the Atacama Desert.
5. Physical divisions of India
India divides into five physical units:
- The Himalayas — three roughly parallel ranges running west to east: Himadri/Greater Himalaya (northernmost, highest, permanently snow-capped; Kangchenjunga, 8,586 m, Sikkim, is the highest peak located within India), Himachal/Lesser Himalaya (hill stations like Shimla and Darjeeling), and Shivalik/Outer Himalaya (southernmost, lowest foothills, containing valleys called duns). North of the Greater Himalaya lie the Trans-Himalayan ranges (Karakoram, Ladakh, Zaskar) — K2 (Godwin Austen, 8,611 m), the world's second-highest peak, sits in the Karakoram Range in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, not under Indian administration.
- The Northern Plains — built from alluvium deposited by the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems; India's most fertile and densely populated region.
- The Peninsular Plateau — India's oldest landmass, dominated by the Deccan Plateau, flanked by the continuous, higher Western Ghats (Anaimudi, 2,695 m, is Peninsular India's highest peak) and the discontinuous, lower Eastern Ghats.
- Coastal Plains — a narrow Western Coastal Plain (Konkan and Malabar coasts) and a wider Eastern Coastal Plain (Northern Circars and Coromandel Coast).
- Islands — the Andaman & Nicobar Islands (Bay of Bengal, tectonic/volcanic origin; Barren Island is India's only active volcano) and the Lakshadweep Islands (Arabian Sea, coral origin).
6. Indian rivers & drainage systems
Himalayan rivers are perennial (fed by both snowmelt and rain): the Indus system (Indus and tributaries Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), the Ganga system (Ganga and tributaries Yamuna, Ghaghara, Gandak, Kosi from the north; Chambal, Betwa, Son from the south), and the Brahmaputra system.
Peninsular rivers are older, rain-fed and seasonal, flowing over hard rock. Most flow east into the Bay of Bengal and form deltas: the Godavari (~1,465 km, called the "Dakshin Ganga") is the longest river of Peninsular India, followed by the Krishna (~1,400 km) and the Kaveri (~800 km). The Narmada and Tapi are the two major exceptions — they flow west into the Arabian Sea and, because they run through rift valleys with a steeper gradient, form estuaries rather than deltas.
Within India, the Ganga (~2,525 km) is the longest river; the Indus is longer overall (~3,180 km) but most of its course lies in Pakistan, with only about a third flowing through India.
7. Monsoon, soils & natural vegetation
The South-West Monsoon (June–September) arrives first in Kerala around 1 June, driven by intense summer heating over India that creates a low-pressure zone drawing in moisture-laden winds from the Indian Ocean. It splits into an Arabian Sea branch, which strikes the Western Ghats and drenches the windward Konkan coast while leaving the leeward Deccan in a rain shadow, and a Bay of Bengal branch, which sweeps up towards Assam and the hills — Mawsynram and Cherrapunji (Meghalaya) receive among the highest rainfall anywhere in the world. The retreating (North-East) Monsoon (October–December) reverses this pattern: Tamil Nadu's coast, in the rain shadow during the South-West Monsoon, receives the bulk of its annual rainfall now, as winds blow from land to sea, pick up moisture over the Bay of Bengal, and strike the state's east coast.

Natural vegetation ranges from dense tropical evergreen forest (rainfall over 200 cm — Western Ghats, North-East, Andamans) to tropical deciduous forest (India's most widespread type, shedding leaves in the dry season), thorny scrub in the arid North-West, and mangrove/tidal forest at river deltas — the Sundarbans, spread across the Ganga-Brahmaputra delta, is the world's largest mangrove forest.
8. Agriculture, minerals, industries, states & infrastructure
Major crops and their belts: rice (kharif, high rainfall — eastern and southern India), wheat (rabi, cooler and moderate rainfall — Punjab, Haryana, western UP), cotton (kharif, black soil — Gujarat, Maharashtra), sugarcane (Uttar Pradesh leads), tea (Assam leads, also Darjeeling in West Bengal), coffee (Karnataka grows roughly 70% of India's coffee), and jute — the "golden fibre" of West Bengal's humid, alluvial delta. Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh saw the sharpest gains from the Green Revolution (1960s–70s), chiefly in wheat productivity, through high-yielding seed varieties and assured canal/tubewell irrigation.
Key minerals: Odisha is India's largest producer of iron ore (over half the national output, concentrated in Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj), ahead of Chhattisgarh and Karnataka; Jharkhand leads in coal; Odisha also leads in bauxite. Major integrated steel plants sit close to these ore-and-coal belts — Jamshedpur (Jharkhand) was India's first, followed by public-sector plants at Bhilai (Chhattisgarh), Durgapur (West Bengal) and Rourkela (Odisha).

Dams: the Tehri Dam (Bhagirathi river, Uttarakhand) is India's tallest dam (260.5 m); the Hirakud Dam (Mahanadi river, Odisha) is India's longest dam (~25.8 km, among the longest earthen dams in the world). Other major dams include Bhakra Nangal (Sutlej) and Sardar Sarovar (Narmada).
Ports: India has 12 Major Ports, wholly government-administered — Deendayal (Kandla), Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru (Nhava Sheva), Mormugao, New Mangalore, Cochin, V.O. Chidambaranar (Tuticorin), Chennai, Kamarajar (Ennore), Visakhapatnam, Paradip, and Syama Prasad Mookerjee (Kolkata). Mundra Port (Gujarat), however, is now India's largest port by cargo volume — the first Indian port to cross 200 million tonnes in a year — despite being a privately operated, non-Major port, a distinction NDA likes to test directly.
9. World geography basics
Continents. Seven continents: Asia is the largest by both area and population; Australia is the smallest continent by area.

Two of these carry a well-known trap each: Myanmar's capital moved from Yangon (its largest city) to Naypyidaw in 2005–06; and Sri Lanka's official capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, while Colombo — commonly assumed to be the capital — is only its commercial capital and largest city.

Time zones. Earth is divided into 24 time zones of 15° of longitude each. Large, longitudinally-spread countries run multiple zones — Russia spans 11 time zones, the widest of any country — while India, despite its ~30° longitudinal spread, deliberately runs a single time zone (IST, GMT +5:30) based on its 82.5°E standard meridian.

11. Common traps
- Confusing weathering with erosion — weathering breaks rock down in situ with no transport; erosion breaks it down and carries it away via an agent (river, wind, glacier, sea). "Denudation" is the umbrella term covering both, not a synonym for either alone.
- Reversing the Godavari–Krishna length order — the Godavari (~1,465 km) is longer than the Krishna (~1,400 km) and is Peninsular India's longest river; NDA regularly offers the Krishna, or even the much-shorter Kaveri, as the "longest Peninsular river" trap.
- Assuming all Peninsular rivers form deltas — the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri (east-flowing) do; the Narmada and Tapi (west-flowing) form estuaries instead, because they run through steeper rift valleys.
- Mixing up Gujarat's capital and largest city — Gandhinagar is the capital; Ahmedabad, the state's largest city and pre-1970 capital, is the trap. The same pattern applies to Assam: Dispur (not Guwahati, of which Dispur is technically a locality) is the capital.
- Treating the pre-2024/2026 Andhra Pradesh capital arrangement as current — Hyderabad's joint-capital status with Telangana ended in June 2024, and the three-capital plan (Amaravati/Visakhapatnam/Kurnool) was formally scrapped by the 2026 Act, which made Amaravati the sole, permanent capital.
- Assuming the port with the most cargo is a "Major Port" — Mundra (Gujarat) now handles more cargo than any other Indian port but is a privately-run, non-Major port; India's 12 government-administered Major Ports are a separate, fixed list.
- Using Yangon or Colombo as a current capital — Myanmar's capital moved to Naypyidaw in 2005–06 (Yangon remains its largest city); Sri Lanka's official capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, not Colombo, which is only its commercial capital.
- Confusing K2 with India's highest peak — K2, the world's second-highest mountain, sits in the Karakoram Range in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, outside Indian administration. Kangchenjunga (Sikkim) is the highest peak actually located within India.
12. Revision protocol
Geography rewards a clean map of close-pair facts far more than any derivation — there is no calculation chain here, only specific facts that sound similar to a nearby wrong answer. Rebuild the eight-state Tropic of Cancer list, the Godavari/Krishna/Kaveri length order, the Narmada-Tapi estuary exception, the states-and-capitals trap table (Gujarat, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Himachal, Uttarakhand), the 12 Major Ports versus Mundra, and the Myanmar/Sri Lanka capital pairs from memory until each takes under five seconds to recall. Since Indian Geography carries roughly half this chapter's marks, drill it first and hardest; then layer Physical Geography (weathering/erosion, rock types, ocean currents) and World Geography basics (straits, canals, defence-relevant capitals) on top as a second pass — at 20% of GK, this chapter is a fast, reliable source of marks for a candidate who has memorised the closed set of facts precisely.
