  • 3Explain where payloads are made and where rockets launch
  • 4Write a technology answer with example, benefit and risk
💡
Why this chapter matters in GPSC Class 1-2
The syllabus names ISRO's Ahmedabad centres and solar parks. A short institution table and a clear space split between payloads and launch cover most questions.

Ahmedabad, Space Science, Nuclear Power and Technology in Gujarat — GPSC Class 1-2

Weightage: GS Paper III, Section I is science and technology, naming space and ISRO's Ahmedabad centres, renewable energy such as solar parks, and biotechnology. The national frame comes from the aliased UPSC CSE science chapters. Project status changes, so use "as reported" for anything under construction.

1. Ahmedabad as a science city

Ahmedabad is the home of Vikram Sarabhai (1919 to 1971), the founder of India's space programme. His family's mill wealth and his vision combined to create institutions that you can learn as a short list.

2. The institutions

InstitutionYearNote
Physical Research Laboratory (PRL)1947Founded by Vikram Sarabhai with K. R. Ramanathan; cradle of the space programme
ATIRA (textile research)1949Ahmedabad Textile Industry's Research Association
Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad1961Founded with Sarabhai's support
National Institute of Design1961Design education
ISRO Space Applications Centre (SAC)1972Builds satellite payloads and applications
Gujarat Forensic Sciences University2009Gandhinagar
IN-SPACe headquarters2020Regulator and promoter for private space activity

Remember: the launch site, Sriharikota, is in Andhra Pradesh. Ahmedabad is where payloads and applications are made.

3. What SAC does

The Space Applications Centre designs the payloads (cameras, sensors and transponders) for Indian satellites, and works on applications such as weather, communication, remote sensing and disaster support. It contributed to missions such as Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan through instruments.

Sarabhai had a clear idea for the programme: use space for development, such as education and communication, and not for prestige alone. A famous early example was the SITE experiment of 1975 to 1976, which broadcast educational programmes by satellite to villages.

4. Nuclear power

Kakrapar Atomic Power Station (KAPS) on the Tapi in Surat district uses pressurised heavy water reactors. Its newer units (3 and 4) are 700 MWe indigenous reactors, among the first of that design. Their commissioning is as reported, so confirm the status.

Remember the three-stage programme: natural uranium, then fast breeder, then thorium.

5. Renewable energy

  • Charanka Solar Park in Patan district (2012) was among the largest at its time.
  • Khavda in Kutch is planned as a very large hybrid solar and wind park.
  • Wind farms along the coast and in Kutch, and rooftop solar programmes.
  • Modhera, a Solanki sun temple town, was named a solar-powered village in 2022, an example of linking heritage and clean energy.

6. Electronics and semiconductors

The state has a semiconductor and electronics policy, and large projects at Sanand and Dholera were announced in 2023 and 2024. Their status is "as reported". For a Mains answer, give the idea: securing supply of chips, jobs and the technology ecosystem, and the risk: large subsidies, water and power needs, and dependence on foreign technology.

7. Health and biotechnology

Gujarat has a pharmaceutical cluster around Ahmedabad and Vadodara and a biotechnology policy. Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC) at Gandhinagar and the Institute for Plasma Research (Gandhinagar, fusion and plasma science) are the research bodies to name.

8. Technology in governance

The state has used technology for SWAGAT, e-Dhara (land records) and e-FIR services. See the governance chapter. When you write about e-governance, add the digital divide as a limit.

9. A Mains pattern

Use technology, example, benefit and risk. For SAC: space applications for development; the SITE experiment; benefits in weather, communication and disaster support; risk of dependence on a few institutions.

Common traps GPSC sets here

  • Placing the launch site in Ahmedabad. It is at Sriharikota, in Andhra Pradesh.
  • Confusing the PRL and SAC. PRL (1947) is a research lab; SAC (1972) builds payloads.
  • Giving Sarabhai's PRL founding as 1969. 1969 is ISRO; PRL is 1947.
  • Placing Kakrapar on the Narmada. It is on the Tapi.
  • Forgetting the risk in a technology answer. Always add one.

Memory aids

  • "1947 PRL, 1961 IIM-A and NID, 1972 SAC": Ahmedabad's institutions.
  • "Ahmedabad payloads, Sriharikota launches": the space split.
  • "Technology, example, benefit, risk": the answer frame.

Summary

Ahmedabad is the base of India's space programme through Vikram Sarabhai, the PRL and ISRO's Space Applications Centre. Kakrapar adds nuclear power, and Charanka and Khavda make Gujarat a solar and wind leader.

Semiconductor and electronics projects are under way as reported, and every technology answer should end with a risk.

Exam protocol

  • Separate where payloads are made from where rockets launch.
  • Learn the Ahmedabad institutions with years.
  • Add a risk to every technology answer.
