Reading Comprehension — CAT VARC
Reading Comprehension is the single largest block within VARC, drawn from 4 passages of roughly 450-600 words each, spanning registers from business and economics to science, philosophy, history and cultural criticism. CAT RC does not reward fast reading — it rewards precise reading: the ability to tell what a passage actually claims apart from what merely sounds plausible, familiar, or reasonable.
1. What CAT RC actually tests
Every RC question is answerable strictly from the passage's own content — outside knowledge of the topic is never required and is often actively misleading, since a wrong option frequently states something true in the real world that the passage itself never claimed. A reader who "already knows about" the passage's topic is at a disadvantage if that prior knowledge substitutes for what the text specifically says.
The five recurring question types are: central idea/main theme, inference, author's tone or attitude, vocabulary-in-context, and specific detail. Each rewards a different reading behaviour, and misidentifying which type a question belongs to is a common way to answer a good question with the wrong kind of evidence.
2. Active reading pays for itself across a whole passage
Since one passage carries 4-6 questions, a single careful first read that tracks the author's central argument, structure and tone pays for itself many times over, compared with skimming once and then re-reading the entire passage separately for each question. Noting, in a phrase or two, what each paragraph is doing (introducing a claim, giving a counter-example, qualifying an earlier point) creates a mental map that most questions can be answered against directly.
Passage structure is itself frequently examined — a question may ask what role a specific sentence or paragraph plays in the author's overall argument (support, counter-example, qualification, conclusion), which is answerable only from having tracked structure during the first read, not by re-scanning for the sentence's content alone.
Different passage registers reward slightly different reading postures. A philosophy or abstract-argument passage rewards tracking the logical chain of premises and conclusions sentence by sentence, since its questions often hinge on exactly which claim is a premise versus a derived conclusion.
A science or data-driven passage rewards tracking what evidence supports which specific claim, since questions frequently test whether a stated conclusion is actually supported by the evidence given or goes beyond it. A business or economics passage rewards tracking cause-and-effect chains, since its questions often ask what would happen if one described condition changed.
3. The main-idea question
A main-idea (or central theme) question is answered by the passage's overall argument, not by its most memorable or most specific detail. The correct option is usually a middle-ground statement: broad enough to cover the whole passage, but not so broad that it goes beyond what the passage actually discusses.
4. The inference question
An inference question asks what must logically follow from the passage, not what merely could be true or what sounds like a reasonable extension of it. The gap between "logically follows" and "sounds reasonable" is exactly what CAT tests here — an option can be a very sensible-sounding real-world claim while still not being something the passage's own text actually supports.
5. Tone, attitude and purpose
An author's tone is read from word choice and framing, not from the passage's subject matter. A passage about a serious topic can still be written in a mocking, admiring, or neutral-analytical tone, and the question is testing whether that specific authorial stance was noticed — words like "merely," "surprisingly," or "it is worth noting" are frequently the actual tonal signal, more so than the topic itself.
6. Detail (specific-fact) questions
A detail question asks for a fact the passage explicitly states, and it is answered by locating the exact sentence, not by recalling a general impression of the passage. These are the most literal question type — the correct option is frequently a close paraphrase of one specific sentence, and the wrong options usually misstate a number, a name, a sequence, or a causal direction from that same sentence.
Re-locating the relevant sentence before selecting an answer is worth the few seconds it costs, since a detail question's wrong options are deliberately built to be plausible-sounding without a direct check against the text.
7. Vocabulary-in-context
A vocabulary-in-context question asks for the word's meaning as used in this specific passage, not its most common dictionary definition. Many English words carry multiple senses, and CAT deliberately selects words whose passage-specific sense differs from the reader's first, most familiar association with that word.
8. The wrong-answer taxonomy
Wrong options in CAT RC follow a small number of recognisable patterns, and learning to name them speeds up elimination dramatically:

"Extreme language" and "out-of-scope" are the two traps most often underestimated — an option can look attractive precisely because it echoes real-world common sense, while the actual passage supports a more qualified or more limited claim than the option states.
Worked Example
Passage (illustrative, ~120 words). "Urban planners have long assumed that adding lanes to a congested highway reduces traffic. Yet transportation data from several major cities suggests the opposite: within a few years of widening, congestion levels return to their previous state, or worsen.
This phenomenon, sometimes called induced demand, occurs because additional road capacity encourages more people to drive — commuters who previously used other routes, other times, or other modes of transport switch to the newly widened road, filling the added capacity.
The lesson is not that road capacity is irrelevant to congestion, but that capacity alone, without complementary measures such as congestion pricing or public transit investment, rarely produces the lasting relief planners expect."

Learn to name a wrong option's trap — too narrow, too broad, extreme language, reversal, half-right, or out-of-scope — since naming the trap is usually faster than re-reading the passage to disprove the option directly.
