Happy and Healthy Living — Class 4 EVS (CBSE)

From the current NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 book, Unit 3: Health and Well-being, Chapter 6. Good health is about a strong body, a happy mind, and staying safe.

1. Why this chapter matters

Being healthy is more than not being sick. It is about a fit body, a happy mind, and being safe. Learning habits of food, exercise, rest, cleanliness, positive thinking, and safety helps children live happily and healthily.

2. Key ideas

  • Good health has four parts: balanced food, physical activity, a happy mind, and personal safety.
  • Balanced nutrition — eat fresh, varied food and drink clean water.
  • Physical activity — play, exercise, and stay active; get enough rest and sleep.
  • A happy mind — spend time with family and friends, share, and think positively.
  • Cleanliness (hygiene) — bathe, brush teeth, wash hands, wear clean clothes.
  • Personal safety — know safe and unsafe situations, say no to anything that feels wrong, and tell a trusted adult.

3. Let's understand

A healthy life stands on a few simple habits. We eat a balanced diet and drink clean water. We play and exercise to keep the body fit, and we rest and sleep enough so the body recovers and grows.

A happy mind matters just as much. Spending time with family and friends, sharing, helping, and thinking positively keep us cheerful. Keeping clean — bathing, brushing, washing hands — protects us from illness.

We also learn to stay safe. We tell safe situations from unsafe ones, we say no to anything that makes us uncomfortable, and we always tell a trusted adult if something feels wrong. A happy, healthy, and safe life helps us do our best.

4. New words

WordMeaning
hygienekeeping clean to stay healthy
exerciseactivity that keeps the body fit
well-beingbeing healthy and happy in body and mind
safefree from harm or danger
trusted adulta grown-up you can rely on, like a parent or teacher

5. Activity corner

Make a "Happy and Healthy Me" chart. Write one thing you will do for each:

  • Food (a healthy choice)
  • Activity (a game or exercise)
  • Cleanliness (a hygiene habit)
  • Happiness (time with someone you love)
  • Safety (one safety rule)

6. Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Thinking health is only about the body. Fix: Health includes a happy mind and personal safety too.
  • Mistake: Ignoring rest and sleep. Fix: Enough rest and sleep are part of being healthy.
  • Mistake: Staying quiet when something feels wrong. Fix: Say no and tell a trusted adult.

7. Let Us Think

  1. What are the four parts of good health in this chapter? Balanced food, physical activity, a happy mind, and personal safety.

  2. Why do we need exercise and sleep? Exercise keeps the body fit; sleep helps it rest and grow.

  3. What keeps our mind happy? Time with family and friends, sharing, helping, and positive thinking.

  4. Name three cleanliness habits. Bathing, brushing teeth, and washing hands (also clean clothes, cut nails).

  5. What should you do if a situation feels unsafe? Say no, move away, and tell a trusted adult.

8. Answer key

  1. Balanced food, physical activity, a happy mind, personal safety.
