Different Lands, Different Lives — Class 4 EVS (CBSE)
From the current NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 book, Unit 5: Our Environment, Chapter 9. Where people live shapes how they live — let us explore this wonderful variety.
1. Why this chapter matters
Our country and our world have many kinds of lands — mountains, deserts, coasts, and plains. The land and climate of a place shape its people's houses, clothes, food, and work. Learning this builds respect for diversity and an understanding of how people adapt to nature.
2. Key ideas
- People live in different lands: mountains, deserts, coasts, plains, and forests, in hot, cold, or rainy climates.
- The land and climate decide how people live:
- Houses: an igloo in snowy lands, stilt houses in rainy or flood-prone areas, tents for desert travellers, houseboats on lakes.
- Clothes: warm woollen clothes in cold places, light cotton clothes in hot places.
- Food and work: fishing on the coast, farming in the plains, herding in the mountains.
- People adapt — they change the way they live to suit their environment.
- This variety makes our country and world diverse and interesting.
3. Let's understand
Imagine three children — one in the snowy mountains, one in a hot desert, and one by the sea. Their lives are different because their lands are different.
In cold, snowy places, people build warm homes (even igloos) and wear thick woollen clothes. In hot deserts, people wear light, loose clothes, use tents or thick-walled houses, and travel by camel. In rainy or flooded areas, stilt houses stand on raised poles. By the coast, many people fish; in the flat plains, people farm.
This shows that people adapt to their environment — the land and climate. Because India and the world have so many kinds of land, people live in many different ways. This diversity is something to enjoy and respect.
4. New words
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| climate | the usual weather of a place over a long time |
| adapt | to change the way you live to suit your surroundings |
| igloo | a dome-shaped house made of snow blocks |
| stilt house | a house built on raised poles |
| diversity | many different kinds (of people, places, ways of life) |
5. Activity corner
Pick two very different places (for example, a snowy mountain and a hot desert). For each, write:
- The kind of houses people build
- The clothes people wear
- One kind of work people do
6. Common mistakes
- Mistake: Thinking everyone everywhere lives the same way. Fix: Land and climate make people live in different ways.
- Mistake: Saying people wear warm clothes in the desert. Fix: In hot deserts, people wear light, loose clothes.
- Mistake: One-word answers for "why" questions. Fix: Give a reason — "People build stilt houses because the area floods."
7. Let Us Think
-
What two things mainly shape how people live in a place? The land and the climate.
-
Why do people in cold places wear woollen clothes? Because woollen clothes keep them warm in the cold.
-
Where are stilt houses built, and why? In rainy or flood-prone areas, so the house stays above the water.
-
Name one kind of work done on the coast and one in the plains. Fishing on the coast; farming in the plains.
-
What does it mean to "adapt" to the environment? To change the way we live to suit the land and climate around us.
8. Answer key
- The land and the climate.
- To keep warm in the cold.
- In rainy/flood-prone areas, to stay above water.
- Fishing (coast); farming (plains).
- To change our way of living to suit our surroundings.
9. Quick revision
- Land and climate shape how people live.
- Houses, clothes, food, and work differ from place to place.
- Igloos in snow, stilt houses in floods, tents in deserts.
- Warm clothes in cold lands; light clothes in hot lands.
- People adapt to their environment; this makes the world diverse.
