Overview
The Industrial Revolution (c. 1760–1840) was the transition from an agrarian, hand-craft economy to one dominated by factory machines, steam power, and mass production. It began in England and spread to Europe, America, and eventually the world. The Industrial Revolution transformed every aspect of life — how people worked, where they lived, how society was organised, and how goods were produced. It created both unprecedented wealth and unprecedented social problems.

Child Labour
Children were employed extensively because they were cheap, could fit into small spaces in mines and factories, and were less likely to organise. The Factory Act of 1833 in Britain restricted child labour: children aged 9–13 could work a maximum of 9 hours; aged 13–18, a maximum of 12 hours; no children under 9 could work in textile mills. The Mines Act of 1842 banned women and children under 10 from working underground.
