Classification of Plants

1. Why Classify?

Classification helps us ORGANISE the vast diversity of living organisms for STUDY and IDENTIFICATION.

The Five-Kingdom System (Whittaker, 1969)

  1. Monera (Bacteria)
  2. Protista (Protozoa, algae)
  3. Fungi (Mushrooms, moulds)
  4. Plantae (Plants)
  5. Animalia (Animals)

We focus on the PLANT KINGDOM (Plantae).


2. Classification of Plant Kingdom

The Plant Kingdom is divided into TWO main groups:

  1. Cryptogams (Non-flowering plants) — no flowers, no seeds.
  2. Phanerogams (Flowering plants) — produce seeds.

3. Detailed Characteristics

Thallophyta

  • Simplest plants. Body NOT differentiated into root, stem, leaves (called THALLUS).
  • Mostly AQUATIC.
  • Examples: Spirogyra (pond scum), Ulva (sea lettuce), Chlamydomonas.

Bryophyta

  • Called 'AMPHIBIANS of the plant kingdom' (live on land but need water for reproduction).
  • Have RHIZOIDS (root-like structures) for anchorage.
  • No vascular tissue (xylem/phloem).
  • Examples: Moss (Funaria), Liverwort (Marchantia).

Pteridophyta

  • FIRST plants to have TRUE vascular tissue (xylem and phloem).
  • Have true roots, stems, and leaves.
  • Reproduce through SPORES (found on underside of leaves — sporangia).
  • Example: Fern — commonly kept as ornamental plant.

Gymnosperms

  • 'Gymnos' = naked, 'Sperma' = seed. NAKED SEEDS (no fruit cover).
  • Most are EVERGREEN (retain leaves year-round).
  • Have needle-like leaves (reduce water loss).
  • Examples: Pine (Pinus), Deodar (Cedrus deodara), Cycas.

Angiosperms

  • 'Angion' = vessel/container, 'Sperma' = seed. Seeds enclosed in FRUIT.
  • The MOST ADVANCED and diverse group of plants.
  • Divided into MONOCOTS and DICOTS.

Common Mistakes

  1. Saying algae have roots (they do NOT — they have a thallus body).
  2. Confusing 'spores' and 'seeds' — Pteridophyta have spores, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms have seeds.
  3. Writing 'dicots have parallel venation' (WRONG — dicots have NETTED venation).
  4. Forgetting that Bryophyta need water for reproduction (amphibians of the plant kingdom).
