Ancient Civilisations — Egypt (c. 3100–332 BCE)

Introduction

Ancient EGYPT was one of the GREATEST and LONGEST-LASTING civilisations in history — surviving for nearly THREE THOUSAND years. It developed along the NILE RIVER in northeast Africa. The Greek historian HERODOTUS called Egypt 'the GIFT of the Nile' — because without the river, Egypt would be nothing but desert.

The Nile — The Lifeline

Gift of the NileHow It Helped
Annual FloodsEvery year (June–September), the Nile flooded and deposited RICH BLACK SILT — making the land incredibly fertile.
Water for IrrigationCanals brought water to fields. Two crops a year.
TransportationThe river was the SUPERHIGHWAY — boats carried people, goods, and stone for monuments.
PapyrusA plant that grew along the Nile. Used to make PAPER, boats, mats, sandals.
FoodFish from the river. Waterfowl from the marshes.

The Pharaoh — God-King

The PHARAOH was the ABSOLUTE RULER of Egypt. He (or she) was considered a GOD on earth — the living embodiment of HORUS (the sky god). The pharaoh owned ALL land, commanded the ARMY, controlled RELIGION, and was responsible for MAAT (cosmic order, justice, truth).

Famous Pharaohs:

  • Khufu (Cheops) : Built the GREAT PYRAMID of Giza (c. 2560 BCE)
  • Hatshepsut: A FEMALE pharaoh. Built great temples. Promoted trade.
  • Akhenaten: Tried to introduce MONOTHEISM (worship of one god, Aten)
  • Tutankhamun: 'King Tut.' Famous because his TOMB was discovered INTACT in 1922
  • Ramesses II ('The Great') : Built many monuments. Long reign (66 years)

The Pyramids

The PYRAMIDS are the most FAMOUS symbols of ancient Egypt. They were built as TOMBS for the pharaohs — to protect their bodies and treasures for the AFTERLIFE.

The Three Great Pyramids of Giza (c. 2560 BCE):

PyramidBuilt ForHeight
Great PyramidPharaoh Khufu146 m (tallest — 481 feet)
Second PyramidPharaoh Khafre136 m
Third PyramidPharaoh Menkaure65 m

How Were They Built?

'This is a GREAT MYSTERY. The ancient Egyptians had NO cranes, NO iron tools, NO modern machinery. Yet they moved TWO MILLION stone blocks — each weighing 2.5 to 15 tonnes — and stacked them 146 metres high.'

Theories:

  • Ramps of earth and brick were built around the pyramid
  • Blocks were dragged on SLEDS (water was poured on sand to reduce friction)
  • The blocks were cut with COPPER tools and shaped by hand
  • It took 20+ YEARS and THOUSANDS of workers

Mummification

The Egyptians believed in LIFE AFTER DEATH. The body had to be PRESERVED so the soul could recognise it. The process of preserving the body is called MUMMIFICATION.

The Mummification Process

  1. Remove organs except the HEART (believed to be the seat of intelligence)
  2. Dry the body with NATRON (a salt) for 40 days
  3. Wrap the body in LINEN bandages — up to 20 layers
  4. Place in a COFFIN, then in a SARCOPHAGUS (stone outer coffin)
  5. Place in the TOMB with belongings for the afterlife: food, furniture, jewellery, the BOOK OF THE DEAD

Writing — Hieroglyphics

Hieroglyphics means 'SACRED CARVINGS.' It was a PICTURE-BASED writing system — each symbol represented an OBJECT, a SOUND, or an IDEA.

  • Written on PAPYRUS (paper made from reeds) and carved on STONE
  • Deciphered using the ROSETTA STONE — found by Napoleon's soldiers in 1799
  • The Rosetta Stone had the SAME TEXT in THREE scripts: Hieroglyphics, Demotic (simplified Egyptian), and GREEK
  • Using the Greek, scholars could DECODE the hieroglyphics

Common Mistakes in ICSE Exams

  1. Saying the PYRAMIDS were built by SLAVES — They were built by PAID WORKERS (farmers during the flood season). Not slaves.
  2. Forgetting the ROSETTA STONE — The key that DECIPHERED hieroglyphics. Found in 1799. Essential exam fact.
  3. Calling Egyptian writing 'pictograms' — It is HIEROGLYPHICS. 'Pictograms' is more accurate for early Sumerian cuneiform.
  4. Confusing the Nile floods with the Tigris-Euphrates — The Nile was GENTLE and PREDICTABLE. The Tigris-Euphrates were VIOLENT and UNPREDICTABLE.

Self-Test: 5 Questions

Q1. Why is Egypt called 'the GIFT of the Nile'? A1. Herodotus called Egypt 'the gift of the Nile' because the river made civilisation POSSIBLE in the middle of a desert. The Nile provided: WATER for drinking and irrigation, FERTILE SILT through annual floods, TRANSPORTATION, PAPYRUS for writing, FISH for food. Without the Nile, Egypt would be EMPTY DESERT.

Q2. What was the PYRAMIDS' purpose? How were they built? A2. The pyramids were built as TOMBS for the PHARAOHS. They were designed to PROTECT the pharaoh's body and treasures for the afterlife. The GREAT PYRAMID of Giza (built for Khufu) is the largest — 146 m tall, made of over 2 million stone blocks. They were built using RAMP systems, sleds, copper tools, and enormous human labour (paid workers, not slaves).

Q3. Describe the process of MUMMIFICATION. Why was it done? A3. Mummification was done because Egyptians believed in LIFE AFTER DEATH. The body had to be preserved for the soul to recognise it. Process: (1) Remove all organs except the HEART. (2) Dry the body with NATRON salt for 40 days. (3) Wrap in LINEN bandages. (4) Place in a coffin and sarcophagus. (5) Place in the TOMB with treasures for the afterlife.

Q4. What is the ROSETTA STONE? Why was it important? A4. The Rosetta Stone is a STONE SLAB found in 1799 by Napoleon's soldiers in Egypt. It has the SAME TEXT in three scripts: Hieroglyphics, Demotic (simplified Egyptian), and GREEK. Because scholars COULD READ Greek, they were able to DECODE hieroglyphics for the first time. It was the KEY to understanding ancient Egyptian writing.

Q5. Who were the PHARAOHS? Give examples of famous pharaohs. A5. Pharaohs were the ABSOLUTE RULERS of Egypt — considered GODS on earth. Famous pharaohs: KHUFU (built the Great Pyramid of Giza), HATSHEPSUT (a female pharaoh who promoted trade), AKHENATEN (tried to introduce monotheism), TUTANKHAMUN (famous because his tomb was found intact), and RAMESSES II (built many monuments, ruled for 66 years).
