The Pied Piper of Hamelin & Mowgli Stories

Part 1 — The Pied Piper of Hamelin

The Story in the Poem

The town of HAMELIN was INFESTED with RATS. They were EVERYWHERE — in the houses, in the food, in the babies' cradles. The people were DESPERATE.

The Stranger Arrives: A strange man appeared — tall, thin, with a LONG COAT (half yellow, half red) and a PIPE. He said: 'I can rid your town of rats. My fee: a thousand guilders.' The Mayor agreed.

The Magic: The Pied Piper played his pipe. The music was MAGICAL. Every rat in Hamelin followed him — out of the houses, through the streets, to the RIVER WESER. They all plunged in and DROWNED. The town was SAVED.

The Betrayal: The Mayor REFUSED to pay the full thousand guilders. 'Take fifty,' he said. 'That's more than enough.' The Piper warned him: 'Keep your promise. The piper's music can call more than rats.'

The Revenge: The Piper played his pipe again. This time: ALL THE CHILDREN of Hamelin followed him — every boy, every girl. They followed him to a MOUNTAIN. A DOOR opened in the mountainside. The children walked in. The door closed. ONLY ONE LAME BOY was left behind — he couldn't keep up. 'The children were never seen again.'

What We Learn

  • Keep Your PROMISES. The Mayor broke his word — and lost the town's children.
  • Greed Punishes Itself. The Mayor was CHEAP. He paid with everything.
  • Every Person Has Value. 'The Piper was not a nobody to be cheated. He was someone to be RESPECTED.'

Part 2 — Mowgli Stories (from The Jungle Book, Rudyard Kipling)

Who Is Mowgli?

A human baby is found in the jungle by a wolf family. The wolves RAISE him as their own. Mowgli grows up as a 'man-cub' — a human child living among animals. He learns their languages. He becomes part of the jungle.

Mowgli's Teachers and Friends

CharacterWho They Are
BagheeraA BLACK PANTHER. Mowgli's PROTECTOR. Wise. Strong.
BalooA BROWN BEAR. Mowgli's TEACHER. Kind. Patient. Teaches Mowgli the 'Law of the Jungle.'
KaaA ROCK PYTHON. Old. Wise. Powerful.
AkelaThe LEADER of the wolf pack. Lone Wolf.
Shere KhanA BENGAL TIGER. The VILLAIN. Cruel. Wants to kill Mowgli. 'Shere Khan is the LAME TIGER — born with a crippled leg. He hunts easy prey — cattle and humans — breaking the Law of the Jungle.'

Key Stories

Mowgli's Brothers: The wolf pack accepts baby Mowgli. Bagheera and Baloo speak for him. 'He is a man-cub. But he is our cub now.'

Kaa's Hunting: Mowgli is captured by the BANDAR-LOG (the Monkey People) — foolish, chattering, irresponsible. Baloo and Bagheera ask KAA THE PYTHON to help rescue Mowgli. Kaa's power over the monkeys is HYPNOTIC — they are TERRIFIED of him.

Tiger! Tiger!: Mowgli RETURNS to the human village — but he doesn't fit in. He uses his jungle skills to KILL SHERE KHAN — with the help of a herd of buffalo. He brings the tiger's skin back. But the villagers — superstitious and fearful — DRIVE HIM OUT. 'Mowgli belongs to TWO WORLDS — the jungle and the village. But neither fully accepts him. He is the man-cub, forever BETWEEN.'

What We Learn

  • The Law of the Jungle. It's not chaos — it's ORDER. Every creature has its place. The Law protects the WEAK from the strong. 'The strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.'
  • Loyalty and Friendship. Baloo and Bagheera risk their lives for Mowgli. 'True friends stand with you — even against danger.'
  • Finding Where You Belong. Mowgli's journey is about finding his PLACE — between the jungle and the human world.
