Raggedy Ann and the Kite
About the Story
RAGGEDY ANN is a classic rag doll character created by Johnny Gruelle. She is a soft, cloth doll with RED YARN HAIR, a triangle nose, and a BIG SMILE sewn on her face. She belongs to a little girl named MARCELLA.
'Raggedy Ann stories are filled with IMAGINATION and WONDER. When Marcella is not looking, Raggedy Ann and her doll friends come to LIFE!'
The Story
Meet Raggedy Ann
Raggedy Ann lived in Marcella's playroom with many other toys — there was RAGGEDY ANDY (her brother), the GRANDPA DOLL, the SUNNY BUNNY, and many others. During the DAY, they were just ordinary dolls. But when Marcella was asleep or away, the dolls WOULD COME TO LIFE!
'Shhh... it's a SECRET. Only the dolls know about it!'
A Windy Day
One afternoon, Marcella decided to fly her beautiful NEW KITE in the meadow near her house. She took Raggedy Ann with her — because Raggedy Ann went EVERYWHERE with Marcella.
The wind was PERFECT for flying kites. WHOOOOSH — the kite soared HIGH into the sky!
'Look, Raggedy Ann!' Marcella shouted. 'The kite is touching the CLOUDS!'
Raggedy Ann's painted eyes looked up at the kite. She WISHED she could fly like that — high and free, dancing with the wind.
A Sudden Gust
But then — a VERY STRONG gust of wind BLEW. The string SNAPPED. The kite FLOATED AWAY, higher and higher, toward the woods!
'Oh no!' cried Marcella. 'My kite!'
The kite disappeared over the TREES. Marcella was very SAD. She walked home slowly, holding Raggedy Ann close.
'I will never see my kite again,' she whispered.
That Night — The Adventure Begins
That night, when Marcella was FAST ASLEEP, Raggedy Ann sat up. She looked at her friend SUNNY BUNNY.
'Did you see where the kite went?' she asked.
'I think it landed in the DEEP WOODS,' said Sunny Bunny. 'But that is a LONG way from here!'
'I am going to FIND it,' said Raggedy Ann BRAVELY. 'Marcella loved that kite.'
The other toys tried to stop her. 'It is too DARK! You might get LOST!' But Raggedy Ann had made up her MIND.
Through the Woods
Raggedy Ann walked through the moonlit woods. The trees whispered in the WIND. OWLS hooted. FIREFLIES glowed like tiny stars.
'I am not SCARED,' she told herself. 'I am on a MISSION!'
She climbed over ROOTS and STEPPED over STONES. Her cloth body was perfect for this adventure — soft and quiet, making NO sound as she walked.
Finding the Kite
After a long walk, Raggedy Ann found the kite. It was CAUGHT in a tall tree, its tail TANGLED in the branches.
'Oh dear,' said Raggedy Ann. 'How will I get it down?'
Just then, a friendly SQUIRREL appeared. 'Can I HELP you?' asked the squirrel.
'Oh yes, please!' said Raggedy Ann. 'If I could just reach that kite...'
The squirrel climbed the tree and NIBBLED the branches until the kite came FREE. It floated gently DOWN into Raggedy Ann's cloth arms.
'THANK YOU, dear squirrel!' she said.
The Return
Raggedy Ann carried the kite ALL the way back home. It was heavy — but her cloth heart was FULL of happiness.
She put the kite NEXT to Marcella's bed. Then she lay down and became a STILL, ordinary doll again.
Morning
When Marcella woke up, she GASPED with surprise. 'My KITE! It came BACK!' She hugged Raggedy Ann tightly. 'Oh, Raggedy Ann, you must have WATCHED over it all night!'
Raggedy Ann just SMILED her sewn-on smile. She never told Marcella about the adventure. Some secrets are MEANT to be kept.
