The Contemporary World — First World War
Overview
'The First World War (1914–1918) was the FIRST INDUSTRIAL WAR — the first conflict fought with MACHINE GUNS, TANKS, POISON GAS, and AIRCRAFT. It DESTROYED four empires (German, Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian) and REDREW the map of Europe. ICSE examiners treat this as FOUNDATIONAL knowledge for understanding the 20th century — the war DIRECTLY led to the Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, and the RISE of DICTATORSHIPS in the 1930s.'
Causes of World War I
Long-Term Causes — The 'MAIN' Factors
| Factor | Explanation |
|---|---|
| M — MILITARISM | European powers COMPETED to build the LARGEST armies and navies. Germany and Britain had a NAVAL RACE (Dreadnought battleships). CONSCRIPTION became NORMAL |
| A — ALLIANCES | TWO competing alliance systems: (1) TRIPLE ENTENTE — Britain, France, Russia. (2) TRIPLE ALLIANCE — Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy (later switched sides) |
| I — IMPERIALISM | RIVALRY for colonies in Africa and Asia. The MOROCCAN CRISES (1905, 1911) brought France and Germany to the BRINK of war |
| N — NATIONALISM | INTENSE patriotism in every country. BALKAN NATIONALISM — Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria wanted FREEDOM from Austria-Hungary and Ottoman Empire. PAN-SLAVISM — Russia SUPPORTED Serbia. |
Immediate Cause — The Sarajevo Assassination (28 June 1914)
| Aspect | Detail |
|---|---|
| Victim | ARCHDUKE FRANZ FERDINAND — heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne |
| Assassin | GAVRILO PRINCIP — a Bosnian Serb, member of the Black Hand (secret nationalist society) |
| Location | SARAJEVO, Bosnia |
| Austria's Response | Issued an ULTIMATUM to Serbia — demanding CONTROL of Serbian investigation |
| Serbia's Response | Accepted MOST terms — but Austria DECLARED WAR anyway |
The Course of the War
The Schlieffen Plan (Germany)
Germany's plan to AVOID a two-front war:
- INVADE France through NEUTRAL Belgium (QUICK victory in the WEST)
- Then turn EAST to FIGHT Russia
Why the Plan Failed
- Belgium RESISTED — delayed the German advance
- Britain DECLARED war when Belgium was invaded (TREATY OF LONDON, 1839)
- The FRENCH army and BEF (British Expeditionary Force) STOPPED the Germans at the MARNE (September 1914)
- The war became a STALEMATE — TRENCH WARFARE on the Western Front
Key Features of the War
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| TRENCH Warfare | Soldiers fought from TRENCHES — 'No Man's Land' between them |
| New Weapons | MACHINE GUNS, POISON GAS (chlorine, mustard), TANKS, AIRPLANES, SUBMARINES |
| Major Battles | VERDUN (1916) — 700,000 casualties. SOMME (1916) — 1 MILLION casualties. PASSCHENDAELE (1917) |
| U-Boat Warfare | Germany used SUBMARINES to sink SHIPS. The LUSITANIA (1915) — 1,198 died |
| USA Enters | 1917 — Germany's UNRESTRICTED submarine warfare + ZIMMERMANN TELEGRAM pushed USA to DECLARE war |
| Russia Leaves | 1917 — BOLSHEVIK REVOLUTION. Lenin signed the TREATY OF BREST-LITOVSK (1918) |
When the War Ended
- GERMANY surrendered on 11 NOVEMBER 1918 (Armistice Day)
- The KAISER abdicated — Germany became a REPUBLIC (Weimar Republic)
The Treaty of Versailles (28 June 1919)
The 'Big Three'
| Leader | Country | Position |
|---|---|---|
| Woodrow WILSON | USA | WANTED a 'peace without victory' — based on his FOURTEEN POINTS |
| Georges CLEMENCEAU | France | WANTED REVENGE — make Germany PAY for the war |
| David LLOYD GEORGE | UK | IN-BETWEEN — wanted to punish Germany but NOT destroy it |
Terms of the Treaty
| Category | Terms |
|---|---|
| TERRITORIAL | Germany LOST: Alsace-Lorraine (to France), Polish Corridor, all colonies. Saar coal mines to France for 15 years |
| MILITARY | Army LIMITED to 100,000. No TANKS, aircraft, submarines. RHINELAND DEMILITARISED. Navy restricted |
| FINANCIAL | REPARATIONS — 6.6 BILLION POUNDS (later reduced, finally paid off in 2010) |
| GUILT | Article 231 — 'WAR GUILT CLAUSE' — Germany ACCEPTED full responsibility for the war |
ICSE Focus on War Guilt
'Article 231 was the MOST CONTROVERSIAL provision. Germans felt HUMILIATED — they were forced to accept BLAME for a war many believed was caused by ALL European powers. This humiliation DIRECTLY contributed to the RISE of HITLER and World War II.'
Wilson's Fourteen Points
| Key Points | Summary |
|---|---|
| Open Diplomacy | NO secret treaties |
| Freedom of the Seas | Free navigation in peace AND war |
| Removal of Trade Barriers | Free trade |
| Disarmament | REDUCE national armaments |
| Self-Determination | Colonial claims FAIRLY adjusted |
| League of Nations | An INTERNATIONAL organisation to PREVENT future wars |
| Specific Territories | Self-determination for Poland, Belgium, France, Balkan states |
'Only the LEAGUE OF NATIONS was FULLY implemented. The other points were IGNORED by the victorious powers — creating the CONDITIONS for World War II.'
The League of Nations (1920)
Aims
- To PREVENT future wars through COLLECTIVE SECURITY
- To promote INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION
- To enforce the TREATY OF VERSAILLES
Structure
| Organ | Function |
|---|---|
| ASSEMBLY | All members — met ONCE a year |
| COUNCIL | Major powers — PERMANENT members (Britain, France, Japan, Italy) |
| SECRETARIAT | Administrative BODY |
| Permanent Court of International Justice | Settled international DISPUTES |
| Special Agencies | ILO (labour), Health Organisation, Mandates Commission |
Why the League Failed
| Reason | Explanation |
|---|---|
| USA never JOINED | The US Senate REFUSED to ratify the Treaty — the MOST powerful country was ABSENT |
| LACK of military force | The League had NO army — could not ENFORCE decisions |
| UNANIMITY rule | ALL members had to AGREE — made ACTION impossible |
| FAILURES | Manchuria (1931) — Japan invaded. Abyssinia (1935) — Italy invaded. The League did NOTHING |
Key Dates
| Year | Event |
|---|---|
| 1914 | WWI begins (28 July). Schlieffen Plan fails |
| 1915 | Italy joins Allies. Lusitania sunk |
| 1916 | Battles of Verdun and Somme |
| 1917 | USA enters. Russia leaves (Bolshevik Revolution) |
| 1918 | Armistice (11 November) |
| 1919 | Treaty of Versailles signed |
| 1920 | League of Nations established |
Common Mistakes in ICSE Answers
| Mistake | Correction |
|---|---|
| Calling WWI 'the war to end all wars' | It DID NOT end wars — it CAUSED WWII |
| Forgetting the ASSASSINATION | The Sarajevo assassination was the IMMEDIATE trigger |
| Ignoring the LEAGUE'S failures | The League FAILED — this explains WWII |
| Treating Versailles as ONLY punishment | It also created NEW nations (Poland, Czechoslovakia) |
