1. Celestial Bodies

'Any natural object OUTSIDE the Earth's atmosphere is called a CELESTIAL BODY or a HEAVENLY BODY.' The study of celestial bodies is called ASTRONOMY.

2. The Moon — Earth's Natural Satellite

2.1 Lunar Phases

'The Moon does NOT produce its own light — we see it because SUNLIGHT falls on it and reflects to Earth.'

The Moon completes one revolution around the Earth in about 27.3 days (sidereal month). The PHASES of the Moon are caused by the CHANGING POSITION of the Moon relative to the Earth and Sun.

2.2 The Moon's Surface

  • No atmosphere, no liquid water, no weather.
  • Covered with CRATERS (caused by meteorite impacts).
  • The dark patches we see are called MARIA (Latin for 'seas') — actually DARK, FLAT plains of solidified lava.
  • Temperature: Daytime ~127°C, Nighttime ~-173°C.

3. Constellations

'A CONSTELLATION is a GROUP of STARS that form a recognisable PATTERN in the night sky.' Different constellations are visible at different times of the year.

Finding the Pole Star (Polaris)

'For centuries, travellers have used the Pole Star to find NORTH. It is a FIXED point in the northern sky — all other stars appear to revolve around it.'

How to find it: Locate the Great Bear (Ursa Major). The two stars at the end of the 'bowl' of the Big Dipper are called POINTER STARS. Draw an imaginary line through them — it points directly to the POLE STAR.

AP Board Context

'The Kuchipudi and classical dance traditions of Andhra Pradesh describe the NAKSHATRAS (lunar mansions) — the 27 constellations through which the Moon passes during its monthly journey. This is an ANCIENT fusion of astronomy and Indian culture. In AP Board exams, students are often asked to locate constellations and the Pole Star in the night sky.'


4. The Solar System

'The SOLAR SYSTEM consists of the SUN (a star), EIGHT PLANETS, their moons, asteroids, comets, and other objects — all held together by the SUN's gravity.'

6. Asteroids, Comets, and Meteors

Asteroids

  • Small, IRREGULARLY SHAPED, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun.
  • MOST are found in the ASTEROID BELT between Mars and Jupiter.
  • The largest asteroid is CERES (diameter ~940 km) — also classified as a dwarf planet.

Comets

  • 'Comets are ICY BODIES that orbit the Sun in HIGHLY ELONGATED paths.'
  • When a comet approaches the Sun, the ice VAPORISES, creating a GLOWING HEAD (coma) and a LONG TAIL that POINTS AWAY from the Sun.
  • Halley's Comet is the most FAMOUS — visible from Earth every 76 years. Last seen in 1986; next due in 2061.

Meteors and Meteorites

  • Meteoroid: A small rock in space.
  • Meteor: A meteoroid that ENTERS Earth's atmosphere and BURNS UP — creating a streak of light ('SHOOTING STAR').
  • Meteorite: A meteor that SURVIVES the journey and STRIKES the Earth's surface.
  • 'Meteor showers occur when Earth passes through the DEBRIS LEFT by a comet — e.g., the Perseid meteor shower in August.'

7. Artificial Satellites

'Artificial satellites are MAN-MADE objects placed in orbit around the Earth (or other celestial bodies) by humans.'
