What Does Sewage Contain?

Sewage: Wastewater from domestic sources (homes, offices, schools). It is about 99.9% WATER and 0.1% dissolved/suspended impurities.

2. Why Is Wastewater Treatment Important?

Untreated sewage is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS:

  • Spreads diseases (cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, hepatitis, dysentery).
  • Pollutes rivers, lakes, and groundwater.
  • KILLS aquatic life (oxygen depletion from organic matter).
  • Produces FOUL ODOURS and unpleasant surroundings.
  • Contaminates DRINKING WATER sources.

Water-borne diseases: 'Cholera, typhoid, and diarrhoea are caused by DRINKING water contaminated with SEWAGE. These diseases kill millions of people, especially children, every year — MOSTLY PREVENTABLE with proper sanitation.'

3. Sewage Treatment — Cleaning the Water

Sewage Treatment Plant (STP): A facility that TREATS wastewater to remove contaminants before releasing it back into the environment.

Stages of Sewage Treatment

Stage 1: Primary Treatment (Physical)

'Step 1: Wastewater passes through BAR SCREENS that remove large objects (sticks, rags, plastic, cans).'

'Step 2: Water enters a GRIT REMOVAL TANK (grit chamber). Sand, gravel, and heavy particles SETTLE to the bottom by gravity.'

'Step 3: Water flows into a SEDIMENTATION TANK. Lighter suspended solids (sludge) SETTLE at the bottom. Oils and grease FLOAT to the top and are skimmed off.'

Stage 2: Secondary Treatment (Biological)

'This is where MICROORGANISMS do the REAL work of cleaning.'

'AIR is pumped into the tank to provide oxygen. AEROBIC BACTERIA BREAK DOWN the organic matter (dissolved human waste, food particles).'

'After several hours, the bacteria die or settle, forming MORE sludge. The water above is now about 90% CLEANER.'

Stage 3: Tertiary Treatment (Polishing)

'Additional filtration and disinfection (chlorine, UV light) to KILL any remaining pathogens. The treated water is now SAFE to release.'

What Happens to the Sludge?

Sludge (the solid material removed during treatment) is processed:

  1. Sent to a digester tank — anaerobic bacteria break it down further.
  2. Releases BIOGAS (methane) — used as a FUEL source.
  3. Remaining solids can be used as FERTILISER (after proper treatment).
