Major Domains of the Earth
Introduction
The Earth is divided into four major domains or spheres:
- Lithosphere — The solid outer layer of the Earth (land)
- Hydrosphere — The water bodies on Earth (oceans, rivers, lakes)
- Atmosphere — The blanket of air around the Earth
- Biosphere — The zone where life exists (land + water + air)
These four domains are not separate — they interact with each other to create the conditions that support life.
Lithosphere
The Lithosphere is the solid outer layer of the Earth. It includes the crust and the upper part of the mantle. The word 'lithosphere' comes from Greek 'lithos' (stone) and 'sphaira' (sphere).
Continents
The lithosphere is broken into large landmasses called continents. There are seven continents:

Asia is the largest continent and also the most populated. It covers about one-third of the Earth's total land area.

Asia:
- Largest and most populous continent
- Contains the world's highest peak (Mt. Everest) and deepest lake (Baikal)
- Countries: India, China, Japan, Russia (part), Saudi Arabia, etc.
- Major rivers: Ganga, Yangtze, Indus, Mekong
Africa:
- Second largest continent
- The Equator passes through the middle of Africa
- World's longest river (Nile — 6,650 km) and largest desert (Sahara — 9.2 million sq km)
- Rich in minerals (gold, diamonds, oil)
North America:
- Third largest continent
- Connected to South America by the Isthmus of Panama
- Contains the Great Lakes (largest group of freshwater lakes)
- Countries: USA, Canada, Mexico
South America:
- Fourth largest continent
- Contains the Amazon River (largest river by volume) and Amazon Rainforest
- World's longest mountain range (Andes — 8,900 km)
- Countries: Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Chile
Antarctica:
- Fifth largest continent
- The coldest, driest, and windiest continent
- Covered with ice (about 90% of the world's ice)
- No permanent human population
- Research stations for scientific study
Europe:
- Sixth largest continent
- Despite being small, it has had a huge impact on world history
- Contains many famous cities: London, Paris, Rome, Berlin
- Major mountain ranges: Alps, Pyrenees
Australia:
- Smallest continent and also a country
- Mostly desert (the Outback)
- Known for unique wildlife (kangaroos, koalas, platypus)
Hydrosphere
The Hydrosphere includes all the water on Earth. The word comes from Greek 'hydor' (water) and 'sphaira' (sphere).

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest ocean. It covers more area than all the landmasses combined.

Atlantic Ocean
- Second largest ocean
- 'S' shape between the Americas and Europe/Africa

- The Sargasso Sea is in the Atlantic
Indian Ocean
- Third largest ocean
- Named after India
- Important for India's trade (India is at the centre of this ocean)
- Has the busiest oil shipping routes
Southern (Antarctic) Ocean
- Surrounds Antarctica
- Coldest ocean
- Major current: Antarctic Circumpolar Current
Arctic Ocean
- Smallest and shallowest ocean
- Located around the North Pole
- Covered with ice for most of the year
- Important for climate research
Atmosphere
The Atmosphere is the layer of air surrounding the Earth. The word comes from Greek 'atmos' (vapour) and 'sphaira' (sphere).
Composition of the Atmosphere

The ozone layer in the stratosphere is crucial for life — it absorbs harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun. The ozone hole over Antarctica is a serious environmental concern.

Biosphere

- Includes: All living organisms — plants, animals, humans, and microorganisms
- Ecosystem: A community of living organisms interacting with their environment

Biosphere reserves are protected areas for conservation:

The four domains do not work in isolation. They continuously interact:
- Water cycle: Hydrosphere + Atmosphere + Biosphere
- Weathering of rocks: Lithosphere + Atmosphere + Hydrosphere
- Photosynthesis: Biosphere + Atmosphere + Lithosphere
- Ocean currents: Hydrosphere + Atmosphere

The biosphere depends on the other three domains. Without air (atmosphere), water (hydrosphere), or land (lithosphere), life could not exist.
