SOF NSO Class 10 — Complete Science Olympiad Course (Level 1 & 2)

The National Science Olympiad is run by the Science Olympiad Foundation and is written in thousands of schools across India each year. Like IMO it runs in two levels, with Level 1 held in the student's own school and qualifying students called for Level 2. Level 1 for Class 10 is 50 questions for 60 marks in 60 minutes across three sections: Logical Reasoning (10 questions), Science (35) and the Achievers Section (5). The first two carry one mark per question; the Achievers Section carries three, so 15 of the 60 marks sit in five questions. The balance of this paper is worth understanding before you plan for it. NSO gives Logical Reasoning only 10 questions — five fewer than IMO does — and devotes 35 of the 50 to Science itself. That makes it a far more syllabus-dependent paper than the maths olympiad: you cannot compensate for shaky Physics or Chemistry with fast reasoning, because there is not enough reasoning in the paper to compensate with. There is no negative marking at either level, in any section. As with every no-penalty paper, that makes the correct approach obvious and widely ignored — every one of the 50 questions should carry an answer when you submit. Eligibility & who can join: • Open to students of Class 10 whose school is registered with the Science Olympiad Foundation. Registration is made through the school, not by individual students. • Level 1 is conducted in the student's own school during school hours. • Level 2 is for students who qualify Level 1 — typically the top 5% of Level 1 candidates class-wise, zone-wise toppers, and class toppers where a minimum number of students sat the exam. • Always confirm the current cycle's dates, fees and qualifying criteria with your school coordinator or at sofworld.org. How the course is structured: Teaching time follows the mark distribution, which in NSO means Science dominates. Physics and Chemistry are taught first and deepest, because they carry the largest share of the Science block and are where olympiad questions most often go beyond routine school treatment. Biology follows, taught for conceptual understanding rather than recall, since NSO tends to ask why rather than what. Logical Reasoning is a compact self-contained track — at 10 marks it matters, but it cannot be allowed to consume time that Science needs. As in IMO, the Achievers Section is treated as a difficulty level rather than a topic: every chapter's teaching ends with Achievers-grade problems on that chapter.
