CUET UG 2026 Preparation Guide: Syllabus, Strategy & Best Books

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) has become the single biggest gateway to undergraduate admissions in India. Over 250 universities - including Delhi University, BHU, JNU, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Allahabad University - admit students through CUET scores. With more than 13 lakh students appearing every year, a smart preparation strategy is what separates a top percentile from an average one.

1. Understand the CUET UG Exam Pattern

CUET UG is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in a computer-based (CBT) format. The paper has three sections:

• Section IA/IB - Languages: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, and verbal ability in the language of your choice.

For subjects like History, Political Science, and Business Studies, even the picture captions and side boxes have produced questions.

3. Choose Your Subject Combination Wisely

Your CUET subjects must match the eligibility requirements of the courses you want. For example, B.Com (Hons) at DU typically requires Accountancy/Mathematics, while Economics (Hons) requires Mathematics. Check the university's eligibility list before filling the CUET form - a wrong combination can lock you out of your dream course even with a high score.

4. Section-Wise Preparation Strategy

• Language: Read one editorial daily (The Hindu or Indian Express). Practice 2-3 reading comprehension passages every day.
• Domain subjects: Finish NCERT twice, then solve chapter-wise MCQs. Make one-page revision notes per chapter.
• General Test: Revise Class 8-10 level maths (percentages, ratios, averages), practice reasoning puzzles, and follow monthly current affairs compilations.

5. Mock Tests Are Non-Negotiable

Take at least 15-20 full-length mocks on the NTA pattern before the exam. CUET is a speed-based test - most students know the answers but run out of time. After every mock, spend an hour analysing errors: silly mistakes, concept gaps, and time sinks.
