Aptitude tests are the most reused exam format in India - campus placements, SSC, banking, railways, CUET's general test, CAT's foundations, even defence exams all draw from the same well: quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and verbal ability. Master this trio once, properly, and you're simultaneously prepared for a dozen doors. Here's the system.

1. The Quant Core (The Same 15 Topics Everywhere)

  • Arithmetic (the highest-yield cluster): Percentages, ratio & proportion, averages, profit-loss, simple & compound interest, time & work, time-speed-distance, mixtures
  • Numbers: Number system, HCF/LCM, divisibility, remainders
  • Algebra-lite: Linear/quadratic equations, ages, series
  • Counting & chance: Permutations-combinations, probability (basics suffice for most exams)
  • Data Interpretation: Tables, bar/pie/line charts - arithmetic wearing a costume

Method per topic: learn the 3-4 core concepts → solve 30 basic problems → 30 exam-level problems → note your personal shortcut sheet. Percentages deserve first and deepest attention - they power DI, interest, and profit-loss simultaneously.

2. Speed: The Real Differentiator

  • Memorise: tables to 20, squares to 30, cubes to 15, fraction-percentage equivalents (1/8 = 12.5%...)
  • Learn 8-10 mental math techniques and drill daily (see our Vedic maths guide)
  • Approximation over calculation: Most MCQ options differ widely - estimate, eliminate, move on
  • Track seconds-per-question in practice; most exams demand 40-70 seconds per quant question

3. Logical Reasoning (The Most Scoring Section)

  • Arrangement family: Seating (linear/circular), puzzles, floor-based - draw diagrams ALWAYS; mental juggling causes the errors
  • Series & analogies: Number/letter series, odd-one-out - pattern libraries build with volume
  • Deduction: Syllogisms (Venn diagram method), blood relations (family-tree notation), directions (compass sketch)
  • Coding-decoding, clocks & calendars, data sufficiency

Reasoning rewards technique-plus-volume: 20 questions daily for 60 days takes most students from 60% to 90%+ accuracy.

4. Verbal Ability

  • Grammar: Subject-verb agreement, tenses, articles, prepositions - one rules source (Wren & Martin selectively, or exam-focused notes) + error-spotting drills
  • Vocabulary: 500 high-frequency words via flashcards; roots/prefixes make retention 3x faster
  • Reading comprehension: The weight-carrier in CAT/placements - one editorial daily + 2 practice passages; read the questions' stems first, and answer only from the passage, never general knowledge
  • Para-jumbles: find the opening sentence and mandatory pairs (pronoun references, connectors)

5. A 90-Day Plan (1.5-2 Hours Daily)

  • Days 1-45: Topic coverage - alternate quant and reasoning days with 20 minutes of daily verbal; Sunday = weekly test + error review
  • Days 46-70: Mixed-topic timed sets (sectional tests); shortcut sheet consolidation
  • Days 71-90: Full mocks on your target exam's exact pattern, alternate days, with the 2-hour analysis ritual: classify every error as concept / silly / speed and patch accordingly

6. Free and Cheap Resources

  • R.S. Aggarwal (Quant + Reasoning) - the evergreen drill books
  • IndiaBix, PrepInsta (placement patterns), Adda247/Oliveboard (govt exam mocks)
  • Previous papers of YOUR target exam - the pattern calibrator no generic book replaces
  • YouTube speed-math and reasoning playlists for technique demonstrations

7. Exam-Day Execution

  • Two passes: sweep easy questions first (banking your accuracy), return for the time-eaters
  • Know the negative-marking math - at −0.25/−0.33, guess only with 50%+ elimination
  • Never sink 3+ minutes into ego battles with one puzzle; the next question costs the same marks

Aptitude is a trained reflex, not a talent. Ninety days of daily drilling builds a skill that pays across placements, government exams, and MBA entrances for years - the best-leveraged preparation in Indian testing.
