2. Human rights

  • Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, regardless of race, sex, nationality, ethnicity, language or religion.
  • They include freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, and the right to a fair trial.

3. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

  • After the Second World War, the UN took steps to protect human rights.
  • The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted on 10 December 1948 (now observed as Human Rights Day); it contains 30 articles.

4. The United Nations Organisation (UNO)

  • The UNO was established on 24 October 1945 (observed as UN Day) to maintain world peace and security.
  • Its main organs are: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the International Court of Justice (at The Hague), the Trusteeship Council, and the Secretariat (headed by the Secretary-General).

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was set up in 1993 to protect and promote human rights in India.
