Road Safety Rules and Regulations — Class 8 Social Science (Samacheer Kalvi)

TN State Board (Samacheer Kalvi) Class 8 Social Science, Civics — Chapter 5. Staying safe on the road.

1. About this lesson

This lesson covers traffic signals and road signs, rules for drivers and pedestrians, the causes and consequences of accidents, and road safety awareness.

2. Traffic signals and rules

  • The traffic signal has three lights: red = stop, yellow = get ready, green = go.
  • Traffic rules in India: on a two-way road, drive on the left; slow down at junctions and pedestrian crossings; on a two-wheeler only one pillion rider is allowed; a driver turning left signals by rotating the hand anti-clockwise.
  • Pedestrians must cross the road only at the zebra crossing.

3. Road accidents

  • A road accident is an undesired event causing injury or death.
  • Direct consequences of accidents: fatality (death), injury and property damage.
  • A common cause is drunken driving — alcohol reduces concentration and blurs vision, causing accidents. Other causes: over-speeding, using a mobile phone, and ignoring signals.

4. Road safety awareness

  • Road Safety Week is observed every year in the month of January.
  • In an emergency, call 108 for ambulance service (also 100 for police, 101 for fire).
  • Wearing a helmet and a seat belt greatly reduces injury.

5. Worked examples

Example 1. What does a red traffic light mean? Stop and wait for green.

Example 2. Where should a pedestrian cross the road? Only at the zebra crossing.

Example 3. Which number do you call for an ambulance? 108.

6. Book-back questions (Samacheer Kalvi)

I. Choose the correct answer

  1. At a red light you must — (a) stop / (b) speed up. Ans: (a) stop.
  2. Pedestrians can cross the road only at the — (a) zebra crossing / (b) middle of the road. Ans: (a) zebra crossing.
  3. Road Safety Week is celebrated in — (a) January / (b) August. Ans: (a) January.
  4. For an ambulance, call — (a) 108 / (b) 101. Ans: (a) 108.
  5. On a two-way road, the driver must drive on the — (a) left / (b) right. Ans: (a) left.

II. Fill in the blanks 6. The green light in a traffic signal means go. 7. On a two-wheeler only one pillion rider is allowed. 8. Drunken driving reduces concentration and blurs vision.

III. Answer briefly 9. State any two traffic rules in India. 10. What are the direct consequences of a road accident?

7. Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Thinking the yellow light means "go faster." Fix: Yellow means get ready (slow down); green means go.
  • Mistake: Crossing the road anywhere. Fix: Pedestrians must cross only at the zebra crossing.
  • Mistake: Calling the wrong emergency number. Fix: 108 = ambulance, 100 = police, 101 = fire.

8. Quick revision

  • Civics Ch 5 · road safety.
  • Signals: red = stop, yellow = ready, green = go.
  • Rules: drive on the left, slow at junctions, one pillion rider, cross at the zebra crossing.

Questions students ask

The real ones — pulled from the Q&A community and tutor sessions.

Alcohol lowers concentration and reaction time and blurs vision, so a drunk driver cannot judge speed or distance properly, which often leads to serious accidents.

At the zebra crossing drivers are required to slow down and stop, so it is the safe, marked place for pedestrians to cross; crossing elsewhere is risky.
