1. About this lesson

2. What is secularism?
- Secularism means an attitude of tolerance and peaceful co-existence among citizens belonging to any religion.
- A secular state is one that does not promote any one religion as the official religion and treats every religion equally, staying neutral and impartial.
3. Secularism in the Indian Constitution
- The Preamble of the Constitution was amended in 1976 (42nd Amendment) to describe India as a secular state.
- Every citizen has the freedom of conscience and the right to profess, practise and propagate any faith of their choice.
4. Features of Indian secularism
- The state has no official religion.
- All citizens are eligible for government service irrespective of their faith.
- There is no religious instruction in government educational institutions.
- No taxes are collected to support any particular religion.
- The state does not discriminate against anyone on the basis of religion.
