1. The Six Physiographic Divisions

India's physical landscape is divided into SIX major divisions, each formed by different GEOLOGICAL PROCESSES over billions of years.


2. The Himalayas (Northern Mountains)

Formation

YOUNG FOLD MOUNTAINS. Formed ~50 million years ago when the INDIAN PLATE collided with the EURASIAN PLATE. The TETHYS SEA sediments were folded UP → the Himalayas. 'They are STILL RISING — at about 5 mm per year. The collision continues.'

Extent

Arc-shaped. 2,400 km long (Indus gorge, west → Brahmaputra gorge, east). Width: 400 km (Kashmir) to 150 km (Arunachal).

3. The Northern Plains

Formation

Formed by ALLUVIUM deposited by the INDUS, GANGA, and BRAHMAPUTRA river systems over millions of years. 'These plains are a DEEP TROUGH filled with sediment — one of the deepest alluvial fills in the world.'

Extent

~7 lakh km². Very FLAT. Very FERTILE. DENSELY POPULATED — 'The Granary of India.'

4. The Peninsular Plateau

Formation

ANCIENT crystalline, igneous, and metamorphic rocks — some of the OLDEST on Earth (3+ billion years). Part of GONDWANALAND. 'This is India's geological CORE — stable, ancient, rich in minerals.'

Divisions

Central Highlands (NORTH of Narmada River): Malwa Plateau. Bundelkhand. Baghelkhand. Aravalli Range (oldest fold mountains in India — highly eroded).

Deccan Plateau (SOUTH of Narmada): LARGEST plateau. Slopes EASTWARD (rivers flow West → East — Godavari, Krishna). BLACK SOIL (regur — volcanic origin, excellent for cotton). Bordered by: Western Ghats (continuous, higher — average 900-1,600 m. Anaimudi, Kerala — highest peak in Peninsular India, 2,695 m. Cause OROGRAPHIC RAIN on windward side. Rain-shadow on leeward side). Eastern Ghats (discontinuous, lower. Cut by rivers — Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri). The two Ghats MEET at the Nilgiri Hills.


5. The Indian Desert (Thar)

Location: Western Rajasthan. LOW rainfall (<15 cm/year). Sandy plains with SAND DUNES (barchans, longitudinal). Luni River: ONLY significant river. INLAND DRAINAGE (doesn't reach the sea — evaporates). Sparse xerophytic vegetation (cacti, Khejri, thorn bushes). 'The Thar is a COLD-WEATHER desert — the monsoon doesn't reach it. It's also the MOST DENSELY POPULATED desert in the world.'

8. Common Mistakes

  1. 'Western Ghats are higher in the north' — They are HIGHEST in the south (Nilgiris, Anaimudi). Height INCREASES southward.
  2. 'Eastern Coastal Plain has natural harbours' — WESTERN coast (submerged) has natural harbours. Eastern coast (emergent) has DELTAS — not ideal for harbours.
  3. 'Khadar is older than Bhangar' — KHADAR = NEW (replenished by floods). BHANGAR = OLDER (higher terraces, kankar).

Western Coastal Plain

Konkan Coast (Mumbai to Goa): NARROW offshore strip. CREEKS and ESTUARIES. Mangroves. Behind the coast: the SAHYADRIS (Western Ghats) rise steeply. Rice, coconuts, cashew, and spices are grown.

Malabar Coast (Karnataka to Kerala): WIDER and more fertile than Konkan. Lagoons and BACKWATERS (Kerala's famous houseboat destinations — Alleppey, Kumarakom). SPICES — pepper, cardamom, cloves — historically traded with Romans and Arabs. Rice, tapioca, coconut, rubber, and tea.

Eastern Coastal Plain

Northern Circars (Odisha to Andhra's Krishna district): Wide, fertile alluvial plains formed by the Mahanadi, Godavari, and Krishna deltas. RICE BOWL OF INDIA. Orissa coast: Chilika Lake (largest coastal lagoon in India — 1,100+ km² — Ramsar site, home to migratory birds and Irrawaddy dolphins).

Eastern Ghats in AP

The Eastern Ghats pass through the DISTRICTS of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam, Kadapa, Kurnool, Chittoor, and Nellore. They are RESPONSIBLE for: (a) Forests and biodiversity (Nallamala, Seshachalam — red sanders). (b) Water catchment (all AP rivers originate in or flow through them). (c) Mineral deposits (barytes, limestone, bauxite). (d) Tourism (Araku Valley, Borra Caves, Talakona Waterfalls).

Coromandel Coast in AP

The Coromandel Coast stretches from the Krishna delta to the Tamil Nadu border in AP. Key features: (a) Nellore and Prakasam districts lie on the Coromandel Coast. It is the OPPOSITE: EAST-flowing rivers (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Mahanadi) flow into the BAY OF BENGAL and form DELTAS — large, flat, triangular deposits at the mouth. WEST-flowing rivers (Narmada, Tapi) flow through RIFT VALLEYS and enter the Arabian Sea, forming ESTUARIES (funnel-shaped, no delta). Reason: East-flowing rivers have gentle gradient and large sediment load; west-flowing rivers flow fast through rifts.

AP's coastal delta agriculture — rice production

The Godavari and Krishna deltas (West Godavari, East Godavari, Krishna districts) are called the 'Rice Bowl of India.' The alluvial deltaic soil, the perennial river water from Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam dams, and the flat coastal terrain together create ideal paddy cultivation conditions. AP's relief features — the Eastern Ghats funnelling rivers to the coast, the coastal plain receiving both SW and NE monsoon rains — directly explain why this region produces so much rice. Understanding the physiographic divisions is understanding AP's food economy.

Himalayan earthquake risk and disaster preparedness

The Himalayas formed because the Indian Plate is still moving northward. This active plate boundary makes the entire Himalayan region seismically active — zone IV and V on India's earthquake hazard map. The 2001 Bhuj earthquake, the 2015 Nepal earthquake (felt strongly in Bihar and UP), and frequent minor tremors in Uttarakhand are all consequences of the Himalayan formation process. Thar Desert solar energy and water scarcity

The Thar Desert in Rajasthan receives less than 25 cm of annual rainfall, has sparse vegetation, and suffers chronic water scarcity. However, the same desert receives over 300 sunny days per year — making it India's most productive zone for solar energy.   1. Six divisions question (4 marks): use a table format — column 1: Division Name, column 2: Key Feature. 6 rows × 1 mark each = 6 marks if asked fully, or 4 marks for any four. Writing in a table saves time and shows clarity.
  2. Himalayan ranges (2-mark question): always write names in order from north to south — Himadri (highest), Himachal (hill stations), Shiwaliks (youngest/lowest). Give one identifying feature of each. Reversing the order or omitting altitudes = mark loss.

The Peninsular Plateau is made of PRE-CAMBRIAN CRYSTALLINE ROCKS — among the oldest rocks on Earth (over 600 million years old). It is a remnant of Gondwanaland, the ancient supercontinent, and has been geologically stable for hundreds of millions of years — that is why it is called an ancient landmass or 'rigid block.' The Himalayas, by contrast, were formed only about 50 MILLION YEARS AGO (very recent in geological time) when the Indian Plate collided with the Eurasian Plate. The sedimentary rocks of the Tethys Sea were folded into mountain ranges. They are 'young' because they formed recently AND because they are still actively rising — making them dynamic, not stable. The age difference (600 million vs 50 million years) explains why the plateau has worn down to a stable flat surface while the Himalayas are still sharp and high.

Himalayan rivers are PERENNIAL (flow throughout the year) for two reasons: (1) They are fed by GLACIER MELT — in summer, when monsoon rains haven't yet arrived, the permanent glaciers in Himadri melt and supply water. (2) They receive heavy rainfall during the SW Monsoon (June–September). Peninsular rivers are SEASONAL — they depend almost entirely on the SW Monsoon. When the monsoon ends (October), river flow drops sharply. The plateau has no glaciers and the crystalline rock has poor water retention. This distinction is critical for India's water security: the Ganga-Brahmaputra system is reliable year-round; rivers like the Godavari and Krishna depend heavily on reservoir storage and monsoon performance.

The Northern Plains deserves this title for four reasons: (1) ALLUVIAL SOIL — rivers from the Himalayas deposit extremely fine, mineral-rich alluvium over millions of years. This soil is deep, porous, and highly fertile — among the best agricultural soils in the world. (2) FLAT TERRAIN — easy to plough, irrigate, and mechanise. (3) PERENNIAL WATER SUPPLY — the Himalayan rivers (Ganga, Yamuna, Brahmaputra, Indus) provide water even in dry seasons. (4) FAVOURABLE CLIMATE — good temperature range for wheat (Rabi) and rice (Kharif). The Indo-Gangetic Plain (Punjab, Haryana, UP, Bihar) produces a large share of India's wheat, rice, and sugarcane. The Green Revolution of the 1960s was most successful in the Punjab-Haryana belt precisely because of these natural advantages.

The Western Ghats run continuously for about 1,600 km parallel to India's west coast. They act as the MAIN WATERSHED (water divide) of the Indian peninsula. Rivers originating on the WESTERN SLOPES (windward side) of the Western Ghats flow westward into the Arabian Sea — these are short, fast rivers forming estuaries (Periyar, Sharavathi). Rivers originating on the EASTERN SLOPES flow eastward across the Deccan Plateau into the Bay of Bengal — these are long rivers forming deltas (Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri, Mahanadi). The Western Ghats also act as a climate barrier: the SW monsoon dumps heavy rain on the western windward slopes (Mangalore, Goa, Kozhikode get 2,000–4,000 mm/year) while the eastern leeward side is in a rain shadow (Deccan gets 600–800 mm). This single mountain range shapes all of peninsular India's drainage, agriculture, and rainfall patterns.

AP spans multiple physiographic zones because of its east-facing position on the peninsula. The WESTERN part of AP (Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, Nalgonda — now partly Telangana) lies on the DECCAN PLATEAU — rocky terrain, black cotton soil, lower rainfall (Rayalaseema is particularly dry). The EASTERN GHATS run in a broken chain through AP (Nallamala Hills, Erramala Hills, Kondapalli Hills), separating the plateau from the coast. The EASTERN COASTAL PLAIN (Coastal Andhra — East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore) is built on alluvial deltaic deposits of the Godavari and Krishna rivers — flat, fertile, ideal for rice cultivation. AP's 974 km coastline (2nd longest in India) gives it access to Bay of Bengal for fishing, trade, and ports. This geographic diversity explains why AP produces both rice (coastal delta) and cotton (plateau Rayalaseema).
