Summary

The Beautiful Garden

The Giant's garden was the MOST BEAUTIFUL garden in the world. It had soft green grass, lovely flowers, and fruit trees that sang with birds.

'Every afternoon, after school, the CHILDREN used to go and play in the Giant's garden. It was a LOVELY garden — soft green grass, twelve peach trees, and flowers that looked like STARS.'

The Wall Goes Up

The Giant returns from visiting his friend the Cornish Ogre and finds the children playing. He is ANGRY.

'MY garden is MY garden!' roared the Giant. 'I will allow NOBODY to play in it but MYSELF!'

He builds a HIGH WALL around his garden and puts up a sign: 'TRESPASSERS WILL BE PROSECUTED.'

The Never-Ending Winter

After the wall is built, SPRING REFUSES to visit the Giant's garden. In all the countryside around, there is SPRING — but in the Giant's garden, it is ALWAYS WINTER.

'The SPRING came, and everywhere there were flowers and birds. But in the garden of the Selfish Giant, it was STILL winter. The trees would not BLOSSOM. The birds would not SING. Even the SNOW and FROST stayed — because SPRING had FORGOTTEN the Giant's garden.'

The Giant's Loneliness

The Giant is MISERABLE. He wonders why spring never comes. He is cold, alone, and UNHAPPY.

'I cannot understand why the Spring is so LATE in coming,' said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden. 'I HOPE there will be a change in the weather.' But there was NO change.'

The Children Return

One morning, the Giant hears a LOVELY sound — a BIRD singing! He looks out and sees that the children have SNUCK in through a hole in the wall. The garden is BLOOMING again!

'The birds were FLYING about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were LOOKING up through the green grass and LAUGHING. It was a LOVELY scene! Only in one corner was it STILL winter — where the LITTLE BOY stood crying because he could not climb the tree.'

The Transformation

The Giant's HEART softens. He REALISES how selfish he has been. He goes out, KNOCKS DOWN the wall, and WELCOMES the children to play forever.

' 'I have been VERY selfish!' said the Giant. 'Now I know why Spring would not come here. I will KNOCK DOWN the wall. From now on, this garden is for ALL the children to play in!' '

The Little Boy's Gift

The Giant helps the LITTLE BOY into the tree. The boy KISSES the Giant. Years pass, and the Giant grows old. One day, he sees the little boy again — now with WOUNDS on his hands and feet.

'Once upon a time,' said the little boy, 'you let me PLAY in your garden. Today you shall come with me to MY garden — which is PARADISE.'

'When the children came that afternoon, they found the Giant lying DEAD under the tree, covered with white BLOSSOMS.'

Answers

A1. The Giant was SELFISH. He did NOT want the children playing in his beautiful garden. He wanted it ALL for himself.

A2. After the wall was built, SPRING REFUSED to enter the garden. It was ALWAYS winter inside — snow, frost, hail, and cold winds. The trees would not blossom and birds would not sing.

A3. The Giant saw that the garden had BLOOMED again when the children entered. He realised his SELFISHNESS had caused the endless winter. His heart SOFTENED.

A4. The wall SYMBOLISES selfishness — keeping others AWAY and shutting yourself OFF from the world. Knocking down the wall symbolises OPENING your heart to love and sharing.

A5. It is a fairy tale because it has: (1) a GIANT (fantasy character), (2) MAGICAL elements (spring controlled by children's presence), (3) a CLEAR moral lesson, (4) a HAPPY ending (though bittersweet), and (5) the theme of GOOD triumphing over selfishness.
