About the Story

'Mowgli and the Wolves' is adapted from Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book' (1894). It tells the story of MOWGLI, a human child who is raised by a pack of wolves in the SEEONEE jungle of India.

'Rudyard Kipling was born in INDIA (Mumbai) in 1865. He loved India deeply and wrote many stories about its animals, people, and jungles. He won the NOBEL PRIZE for Literature in 1907.'

Summary

Mowgli Is Found

One night, Father Wolf finds a HUMAN baby at the mouth of their cave. At the same time, Shere Khan the tiger tries to HUNT the baby.

'Shere Khan was the FEARED tiger of the Seeonee jungle. He was LAME in one leg, but he was STILL the most dangerous predator. He wanted to KILL the man-cub, but he was afraid to enter the wolf's cave.'

The Pack Council

Father Wolf brings Mowgli to the PACK COUNCIL at Council Rock. Akela, the leader, must decide whether the wolf pack will ACCEPT the man-cub.

'Raksha, the mother wolf, DEFENDED Mowgli fiercely. 'He came to us NAKED and ALONE, but my own cubs are no dearer to me than he is! He shall NOT be killed!' '

Baloo and Bagheera

BALOO the bear SPEAKS for Mowgli at the council. BAGHEERA the panther offers a BULL as payment to accept Mowgli into the pack. Mowgli is ACCEPTED.

'Bagheera said, 'He is a MAN-CUB. One day he will be STRONG and WISE. Keep him, and he may PROTECT the pack from Shere Khan.' The pack ACCEPTED Mowgli because of Bagheera's gift.'

Learning the Law of the Jungle

Mowgli grows up learning the LAW OF THE JUNGLE from Baloo. He learns:
