Coordination — Class 10 Biological Science
"Your brain processes 11 million bits of information every second. You are consciously aware of only about 40 of them. The rest — breathing, heartbeat, digestion, balance — is COORDINATION. Silent. Automatic. Miraculous."
1. Why Coordination?
Multicellular organisms have BILLIONS of cells. They must work TOGETHER — not independently. Coordination ensures: the right organ does the RIGHT thing at the RIGHT time. There are TWO coordinating systems: the NERVOUS SYSTEM (fast, electrical, point-to-point) and the ENDOCRINE SYSTEM (slow, chemical, widespread).
2. The Nervous System
The Neuron — Functional Unit
Structure of a Neuron: Dendrites (branched extensions — RECEIVE signals from other neurons or receptors). Cell Body (soma — contains nucleus. Integrates incoming signals). Axon (long fibre — TRANSMITS signal away from cell body. Covered by MYELIN SHEATH — insulates, speeds up transmission). Axon Terminals (release NEUROTRANSMITTERS into the synapse).
How a Nerve Impulse Travels
- Stimulus (heat, pressure, light) detected by RECEPTOR. 2. Receptor generates ELECTRICAL IMPULSE. 3. Impulse travels along DENDRITE → Cell Body → AXON. 4. At the AXON TERMINAL: electrical impulse → release of CHEMICAL NEUROTRANSMITTER (acetylcholine). 5. Neurotransmitter crosses the SYNAPSE (gap between neurons). 6. Binds to receptors on NEXT neuron → generates NEW electrical impulse. 'The synapse CONVERTS electrical → chemical → electrical. This is where DRUGS, ALCOHOL, and many POISONS act — by interfering with neurotransmitters at the synapse.'

Reflex Arc — Fast, Automatic, Protective
A REFLEX is a RAPID, AUTOMATIC response to a stimulus — without conscious thought. Pathway: Stimulus (hot object) → Receptor (skin) → SENSORY NEURON → SPINAL CORD (relay neuron) → MOTOR NEURON → Effector (muscle contracts → hand pulls away).
'The reflex arc BYPASSES the brain. This SAVES TIME — crucial when milliseconds matter. The brain is INFORMED later (you feel the pain AFTER pulling away). Reflexes are PROTECTIVE — they prevent or minimise injury.'
3. The Endocrine System — Chemical Coordination
HORMONES are chemical messengers secreted by ENDOCRINE GLANDS directly into the BLOOD. They travel to TARGET ORGANS and regulate their functions. 'Hormones are SLOW but LONG-LASTING. They control: growth, metabolism, reproduction, mood, and stress response.'

Iodine and Goitre — An Indian Context
'Iodine deficiency is a MAJOR public health issue in India. The thyroid gland needs iodine to produce thyroxine. Without iodine: the gland WORKS HARDER to compensate → ENLARGES → GOITRE (visible swelling in the neck). Solution: IODISED SALT. The Indian government MANDATED iodised salt — but in many rural areas, non-iodised ("stone salt") is still used because it's cheaper. Goitre and hypothyroidism remain problems in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and the Himalayan belt.'
4. Plant Hormones (Phytohormones)
Plants also coordinate — but WITHOUT a nervous system. They use CHEMICAL messengers.

Tropisms — Growth Responses to Stimuli
Phototropism (bend toward LIGHT — auxin accumulates on SHADED side → cells elongate MORE on shaded side → bends toward light). Geotropism (roots grow DOWN — toward gravity. Shoots grow UP — against gravity). Hydrotropism (roots grow toward WATER). Thigmotropism (response to TOUCH — tendrils wrap around support).

6. Common Mistakes
- 'All reflexes bypass the brain completely' — The INITIAL response bypasses the brain (goes through spinal cord). But the brain is INFORMED a split second later — you FEEL the pain.
- 'Pituitary is the largest gland' — It's the 'MASTER GLAND' functionally — but the THYROID is larger. 'Master' refers to its CONTROL function, not its size.
- 'Adrenaline is the only adrenal hormone' — The adrenal MEDULLA produces adrenaline. The adrenal CORTEX produces cortisol (long-term stress) and aldosterone (salt balance).

Cerebrum — The Thinking Part
- LARGEST part of the brain (85% of brain weight).
- Divided into TWO HEMISPHERES (left and right).
- LEFT hemisphere controls RIGHT side of body; RIGHT hemisphere controls LEFT side.
- Divided into FOUR LOBES: Frontal (reasoning, planning, speech), Parietal (touch, pressure, pain), Temporal (hearing, memory), Occipital (vision).
- 'The cerebrum's outer layer — the CEREBRAL CORTEX — is highly folded. Folding INCREASES surface area, allowing more neurons to be packed in. This is what makes human intelligence possible.'
Cerebellum — The Coordinator
- Located at the BACK of the brain, below the cerebrum.
- Controls: BALANCE, POSTURE, and FINE MOTOR COORDINATION.
- 'When a cricketer catches a ball — judging its speed, trajectory, and positioning the hands at exactly the right moment — that is the CEREBELLUM at work. It performs THOUSANDS of micro-adjustments per second without you thinking about it.'
Medulla Oblongata — The Life Sustainer
- Located at the BRAINSTEM, connecting brain to spinal cord.
- Controls INVOLUNTARY actions: heartbeat, breathing, blood pressure, swallowing, coughing, sneezing, vomiting.
- 'The medulla is about the size of your little finger. But damage to it is FATAL. This is why severe injury at the base of the skull is so dangerous.'
Hypothalamus — The Homeostasis Centre
- Located BELOW the thalamus, ABOVE the pituitary gland.
- Controls: Body temperature (shivering when cold, sweating when hot). Hunger and thirst. Sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythm). Emotional responses (anger, fear, pleasure).
- Produces RELEASING HORMONES that control the PITUITARY GLAND.
- 'The hypothalamus is the BRIDGE between the nervous system and the endocrine system. It is the CEO — the pituitary is the messenger.'
9. Reflex Arc — Detailed Pathway
'A reflex arc is the NEURAL PATHWAY that a reflex action follows. You MUST be able to draw and label this for the AP Board exam.'
The Five Components of a Reflex Arc
- RECEPTOR: Specialised nerve endings in sense organs (skin, eyes, ears). DETECTS the stimulus (heat, pressure, light).
- SENSORY NEURON (Afferent neuron): Carries the impulse FROM the receptor TOWARD the spinal cord.
- SYNAPSE IN SPINAL CORD: The sensory neuron connects with a RELAY NEURON (interneuron) in the grey matter of the spinal cord. The relay neuron connects to a MOTOR NEURON.
- MOTOR NEURON (Efferent neuron): Carries the impulse FROM the spinal cord TOWARD the effector.
- EFFECTOR: Muscle or gland that carries out the response. Muscle CONTRACTS (hand pulls away) or gland SECRETES.
'Step-by-step example: You touch a HOT object. (1) Heat receptors in your skin DETECT the stimulus. (2) Sensory neuron carries impulse TO the spinal cord. (3) In the spinal cord: relay neuron passes the impulse from sensory neuron to motor neuron. (4) Motor neuron carries impulse TO the arm muscle. (5) Muscle CONTRACTS — hand pulls away. ALL of this happens in MILLISECONDS — before you FEEL the pain.'
Why the Reflex Arc is Important
- SPEED: The signal travels a SHORTER distance (hand → spinal cord → hand) instead of going all the way to the brain and back.
- PROTECTION: Reflexes PREVENT injury by minimising exposure to harm.
- BRAIN IS INFORMED LATER: Pain signals travel to the brain SLOWER — so you pull away BEFORE you feel the pain.
