Information and Communication Technology (ICT) — UGC NET Paper 1
An aspirant who has never touched a computer and an aspirant who works in IT full time sit the same ICT questions and can score identically — because NTA is testing named vocabulary, not hands-on skill. That is either good news or bad news depending on how you prepare: good, because there is no ambiguous "judgment call" here to second-guess; bad, because every wrong answer in this chapter is a fact you simply hadn't memorised precisely enough.
1. What UGC NET actually asks
ICT carries weightPct 9 of Paper 1's 50 questions — roughly 4 to 5 questions, each worth 2 marks with no negative marking, so a half-remembered abbreviation is still worth guessing on rather than skipping.
The unit splits cleanly into three testable buckets, and NTA draws from all three across a sitting:
- Bare definitions and abbreviations — "What does URL stand for," "LAN is used for networking within what kind of area," "which generation of computers introduced the microprocessor." Pure recall, answered instantly if the term is known and missed instantly if it isn't.
- Matching an ICT initiative to its sponsoring body or purpose — this is where NTA gets specific and where most marks are actually lost: SWAYAM, NPTEL, e-PG Pathshala, INFLIBNET, and DELNET are all real, distinct Indian higher-education ICT initiatives, and questions frequently test which body runs which platform and what each one actually does.
- ICT-and-society reasoning — short scenario or concept questions on the digital divide, e-governance, or netiquette, testing whether the underlying idea, not just the term, is understood.
2. Meaning, characteristics, and basics of ICT
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) refers to the convergence of computing technology and telecommunications technology into a single infrastructure for creating, storing, processing, transmitting, and sharing information. The "C" in ICT is often the exam's emphasis point: it isn't just computing in isolation, it's computing combined with communication — networks, the internet, mobile technology — that makes information usable and shareable at scale.
The characteristics NTA tests as defining features of ICT:
- Speed — processing and transmitting information far faster than manual or print-based methods.
- Storage capacity — vast amounts of data held in comparatively tiny physical space, compared to paper records.
- Accuracy and reliability — repeatable, error-free processing once a system is correctly set up (though the data fed in can still be wrong — "garbage in, garbage out" is a genuinely tested phrase here).
- Reach and connectivity — information and services made available across distance instantly, collapsing the effect of physical location.
- Interactivity and multimedia integration — combining text, audio, video, and interactive elements in a single delivery, and allowing two-way response rather than one-way broadcast.
A brief note on the evolution of computers, tested at a purely conceptual, ordering level rather than exact-date recall: computing progressed through broad generations — from bulky vacuum-tube machines, to smaller and more reliable transistor-based machines, to integrated-circuit machines that shrank computing further and made it dramatically cheaper, to the microprocessor era that put an entire processing unit on a single chip and enabled the personal computer. Each generational leap is remembered by NTA chiefly for what changed the underlying hardware, not for a specific year — know the correct order of vacuum tube → transistor → integrated circuit → microprocessor, since that ordering itself is a common question.
3. Networking and internet terminology
This is the highest-yield table in the chapter — a large share of ICT questions are a bare abbreviation, tested directly.

A distinction worth holding precisely: the internet is the underlying global network of interconnected computer networks; the World Wide Web is one service — a system of linked documents — that runs on top of the internet, alongside other services such as email. NTA has tested this exact distinction ("the internet and the WWW are the same thing" is a false statement) more than once.
4. ICT in teaching-learning — India's real ICT initiatives
This is the section where precision matters most, because these are real, named Government of India / UGC platforms, and NTA tests which body runs which one.
- SWAYAM (Study Webs of Active Learning for Young Aspiring Minds) — a national MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) platform launched by the Ministry of Education, hosting free online courses from school level through postgraduate level, aggregating content from NPTEL, UGC, CEC, NCERT, NIOS, IGNOU, and IIM Bangalore. - e-PG Pathshala — a UGC e-content initiative providing high-quality, curriculum-based postgraduate-level e-content across a wide range of subjects, implemented and hosted through INFLIBNET.
- INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network Centre) — an autonomous inter-university centre set up by the UGC to network university and college libraries and promote resource sharing; INFLIBNET hosts Shodhganga (a repository of Indian doctoral theses), the N-LIST programme (which subscribes to e-journals and e-books on behalf of colleges and universities), and e-PG Pathshala.
- DELNET (Developing Library Network) — a library networking initiative promoting resource sharing among libraries, particularly useful for inter-library loan and locating which library holds a specific title.
- National Digital Library of India (NDLI) — a large aggregator of educational content across school, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels, hosted by IIT Kharagpur.
The exam-relevant pattern across all of these: UGC's own initiatives run largely through INFLIBNET (e-PG Pathshala, Shodhganga, N-LIST), while SWAYAM and NPTEL are broader multi-institutional platforms coordinated at the Ministry level, with NPTEL itself being an IIT/IISc-led initiative whose content SWAYAM aggregates alongside several other sources.
5. ICT and society
- Digital divide — the gap between those with meaningful access to modern ICT and those without it. NTA tests this as a layered idea, not a single gap: an access divide (who has a device and connectivity at all), a usage divide (who actually uses available access productively), and a quality-of-use divide (differences in the sophistication or benefit of that use) — a household with a single shared, slow-connection phone is not on equal footing with one with reliable broadband and multiple devices, even though both technically "have access."

6. Modes of e-learning
- Synchronous learning — teacher and learners interact in real time (a live video class, a live chat session); it preserves immediacy and live Q&A but requires everyone present at the same time.
- Asynchronous learning — learners access recorded content or materials on their own schedule (recorded lectures, discussion forums, self-paced MOOCs); it trades immediacy for flexibility.

- Confusing SWAYAM with NPTEL — NPTEL is a specific IIT/IISc-led content source focused on engineering, science, and management; SWAYAM is the broader national MOOC platform that aggregates NPTEL's content alongside several other sources across all education levels.
- Attributing e-PG Pathshala, Shodhganga, or N-LIST to the wrong body — all three are UGC initiatives implemented and hosted through INFLIBNET, not standalone platforms of their own.
- Confusing DELNET with INFLIBNET — both are library-networking initiatives, but DELNET's core function is resource sharing and inter-library loan across a wide network of libraries, while INFLIBNET is specifically UGC's own autonomous inter-university centre running e-PG Pathshala, Shodhganga, and N-LIST.
