Under the revised pattern every CLAT quant question is a data-interpretation question — a table, a bar or pie chart, or a caselet, followed by questions. The arithmetic is the percentage, ratio and average you already know; the marks turn on reading the data cleanly and pulling the right numbers. Data Interpretation and Caselets — CLAT Quantitative Techniques

Under the revised pattern, all of CLAT quant is data interpretation — a table, a bar or pie chart, or a caselet, followed by questions. The arithmetic is the percentage, ratio and average you already know; the new skill is reading the data cleanly and pulling the right numbers. This chapter drills the sources — tables, bar and pie charts — and the two conversions the section leans on most: percentage share and the pie-angle ↔ percentage swap.


1. Reading a table

A table lists exact values. The core moves are totals, differences, and shares.

  • Sales — A: 200, B: 300, C: 500 → total .
  • Share of C .

Read the row and column headings first — most table errors come from lifting the wrong cell.


2. Bar charts — compare heights

A bar chart compares quantities across categories or years. The usual questions:

  • Difference between two bars.
  • Percentage change across years: .
  • Revenue ₹40 lakh → ₹50 lakh: growth .

Note the scale and units on the axis — a bar chart in "₹ lakh" or "thousands" is a common units trap.


3. Pie charts — the angle–percentage swap

A pie chart splits a whole () into sectors. Convert both ways:

  • 25% of the total → sector angle .
  • A sector → of the total.

The whole pie is 360° = 100%. Turn a sector into a percentage, then into an actual amount using the given total.


4. From share to amount

Once you have a percentage share and the total, the amount is one step.

  • Monthly budget ₹30,000; Rent 40%, Food 30%. Rent ; Food ; Rent exceeds Food by ₹3,000.

Chart questions usually end in an amount or a difference — carry the percentage through to the rupee (or unit) figure the question wants.


5. Caselets — data in prose

A caselet hides the table inside a paragraph. Extract the numbers into your own mini-table before computing.

  • "Over five days a shop sold 20, 25, 30, 15 and 10 units." Total ; the day with 25% of total (25 units) is Day 2.

Convert the words to a table on your rough sheet; the question then becomes an ordinary table read.


6. The DI method

  1. Read the headings, scale and units before any question.
  2. Note whether the question wants a total, difference, share, or change.
  3. For pie charts, swap angle ↔ percentage, then to the amount.
  4. For caselets, rebuild the table from the prose.
  5. Re-read the question to confirm the exact cell/period asked.

Lifting the wrong cell from a table.
Read the row and column headings before pulling a number. Most table errors are misreads, not miscalculations — confirm you are on the right period or category first.

Ignoring the axis scale or units on a bar chart.
Check whether the axis is in units, thousands or ₹ lakh. A value read as '40' may be ₹40 lakh — carry the units through so the final amount is right.

Taking percentage change on the later value.
Percentage change is always on the earlier (base) figure: (later − earlier) / earlier × 100. A rise from 40 to 50 is 25%, using 40 as the base, not 20% on 50.

Confusing a pie sector's angle with its percentage.
A sector's angle is out of 360°, not out of 100. Convert with angle = (percentage/100) × 360°, so 25% is 90° and a 72° sector is 20%.

Stopping at the percentage instead of the amount.
Chart questions usually want a rupee or unit figure. Turn the share into a percentage, then multiply by the given total to reach the amount the question actually asks for.

Data interpretation means reading information presented as a table, bar chart, pie chart or caselet and answering questions from it. Under the revised CLAT pattern the quant section is entirely DI: you are given a data set and asked to compute totals, shares, changes or averages. The arithmetic is ordinary — percentages, ratios and averages — so the real skill is reading the data accurately and choosing the right operation.

Use percentage share = category value ÷ total × 100. If product C sells 500 out of a total of 1000, its share is 500/1000 × 100 = 50%. This one move — a part as a percentage of the whole — is the most frequent calculation in the entire section.

The whole pie is 360°, which represents 100% of the data. To go from percentage to angle, multiply by 360/100: 25% is (25/100) × 360° = 90°. To go from angle to percentage, divide by 360 and multiply by 100: a 72° sector is (72/360) × 100 = 20%. Convert to a percentage first, then to an amount using the given total.

Always on the earlier, or base, value: change% = (later − earlier) / earlier × 100. A rise from ₹40 lakh to ₹50 lakh is (10/40) × 100 = 25%, not 20%. Dividing by the later value is a classic error that shifts every answer.

Extract the numbers into your own mini-table on the rough sheet before computing. A sentence like 'over five days a shop sold 20, 25, 30, 15 and 10 units' becomes a five-row table, after which the question is an ordinary table read. Converting words to a table prevents you from missing or misplacing a figure.
