Exploring Our Neighbourhood — Class 4 EVS (CBSE)

From the current NCERT Our Wondrous World Grade 4 book, Unit 1: Our Community, Chapter 2. Let us look around our neighbourhood and meet the places and people that help us.

1. Why this chapter matters

Our neighbourhood is full of useful places and helpful people. Knowing what each place does, who the community helpers are, and how to observe and find our way builds awareness and makes us responsible members of our locality.

2. Key ideas

  • A neighbourhood has many places: homes, school, market, park, hospital, post office, police station, bank, and a place of worship.
  • Each place helps us in a special way (a hospital cares for the sick; a post office sends letters and parcels).
  • Community helpers serve us — a doctor, teacher, shopkeeper, postman, police officer, and others.
  • We can observe our surroundings and use landmarks and directions to find our way.
  • Modern communication — phones, the internet, and the post — connects people in the neighbourhood and beyond.

3. Let's understand

Take a walk around your neighbourhood and you will pass many places. The school is where children learn; the market is where we buy food and things; the park is for play and fresh air; the hospital treats the sick; the post office sends letters and parcels; the police station keeps us safe.

Each place has helpers who do important work — a teacher, a shopkeeper, a doctor, a postman, a police officer. We depend on them, and we should respect and thank them.

By observing carefully and using landmarks (a big tree, a temple, a shop), we can describe where places are and find our way. Today, phones and the internet also help us stay connected.

4. New words

WordMeaning
neighbourhoodthe area around where we live
landmarka well-known place used to find the way
community helpera person whose work serves the community
public servicea service for everyone, like a hospital or post office
directionswords like left, right, near, far to find a place

5. Activity corner

Draw a simple map of your neighbourhood. Mark your home and three places near it. Write:

  • Three places and how each one helps you
  • One community helper and their work
  • Directions from your home to one place

6. Common mistakes

  • Mistake: Thinking only shops are part of a neighbourhood. Fix: A neighbourhood also has schools, parks, hospitals, post offices, and more.
  • Mistake: Forgetting the helpers behind each place. Fix: Each place has helpers — doctors, teachers, postmen, police.
  • Mistake: One-word answers for "how does it help" questions. Fix: Say what the place does, e.g., "A hospital treats sick people."

7. Let Us Think

  1. Name four places found in a neighbourhood. Any four: school, market, park, hospital, post office, police station, bank.

  2. How does a post office help us? It sends and delivers letters and parcels.

  3. Who are community helpers? Give two examples. People whose work serves the community, such as a doctor and a postman.

  4. How can we find our way in a neighbourhood? By observing landmarks and using directions like left, right, near, and far.

  5. How does modern communication help the neighbourhood? Phones and the internet help people stay connected and share information quickly.

8. Answer key
