Treasure Island — Robert Louis Stevenson

About the Author

Robert Louis Stevenson (1850–1894) was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer. He is famous for Treasure Island (1883), Kidnapped (1886), and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886). Treasure Island began as a game — Stevenson drew a map with his stepson Lloyd Osbourne and began telling the story. It was first published as a serial in Young Folks magazine.

The Story — A Summary

The Adventure Begins

Young JIM HAWKINS lives with his parents at the ADMIRAL BENBOW INN. One day, an old sea captain — BILLY BONES — arrives at the inn. He is secretive and fearful. He has a TATTOOED CHEST that he watches day and night.

The Map

Billy Bones dies mysteriously. Jim opens the chest and finds — A TREASURE MAP. It shows the location of CAPTAIN FLINT'S buried treasure on a remote island. Jim takes the map to Dr Livesey and Squire Trelawney. They decide to SAIL for the treasure.

The Ship and the Crew

Trelawney buys a ship — the HISPANIOLA. He hires a crew. The SHIP'S COOK is a mysterious one-legged man named LONG JOHN SILVER. Silver is CHARMING, funny, and helpful. Everyone likes him.

The Secret Revealed

Jim hides in an APPLE BARREL one night. He overhears Silver talking to the crew. Silver is NOT a loyal sailor. He is a PIRATE. He was part of Captain Flint's crew. He plans to LEAD A MUTINY — steal the treasure and kill the loyal men.

Jim is TERRIFIED. He tells Dr Livesey, the Squire, and the Captain (Captain Smollett). Now they know the TRUTH — but they are outnumbered.

The Island

They reach Treasure Island. The loyal men arm themselves. They take shelter in an old STOCKADE (a fortified cabin). The pirates attack. There is violence on both sides.

The Castaway — Ben Gunn

Jim meets BEN GUNN — a man marooned on the island for THREE YEARS. Ben Gunn is STRANGE and lonely. He tells Jim he would do ANYTHING for a piece of cheese. Jim sees Ben Gunn is KEY to their survival.

The Adventure Continues

Jim takes BRAVE risks:

  • He sneaks away and finds BEN GUNN'S BOAT
  • He uses the boat to CUT THE HISPANIOLA'S anchor rope
  • He boards the ship alone and FIGHTS the pirate Israel Hands
  • He finds the treasure — but discovers BEN GUNN has ALREADY moved it

The Climax

After fierce fighting, the loyal men (with Ben Gunn's help) DEFEAT the pirates. They find the treasure in a cave. Long John Silver ESCAPES with a small bag of gold. Jim and his friends return to England with the REMAINING treasure — rich and changed forever.

Stevenson's Writing Style

Treasure Island is an ADVENTURE NOVEL, but it is also a MASTERPIECE of storytelling:

  • First-Person Narration: Jim Hawkins tells the STORY himself. We see everything through his EYES — his fear, his excitement, his growth.
  • Vivid Characters: Every character is MEMORABLE — from Billy Bones to Long John Silver. Even minor characters have DISTINCTIVE voices.
  • Suspense and Pacing: Stevenson MASTERS the cliffhanger. The apple barrel scene, the fight in the stockade, Jim's encounter with Israel Hands — each chapter ENDS with tension that makes you TURN the page.
  • Dialogue: The characters SPEAK in distinctive voices. Silver's way of speaking is especially NOTABLE — he is charming and menacing at the SAME time.

The Island as a Testing Ground

Treasure Island is not just a SETTING — it is a TESTING GROUND for CHARACTER:

CharacterTested ByOutcome
Jim HawkinsDanger, temptation, loyaltyGROWS from boy to man
Long John SilverGreed, survival, trustShows COMPLEXITY — not purely evil
Dr LiveseyLeadership under pressureRemains CALM and WISE
Ben GunnLoneliness, redemptionREDEEMED by helping the group

The Genius of Long John Silver

'Long John Silver is one of the GREATEST characters in English literature.' Why? Because he is NOT a simple villain. He is:

  • CHARMING — everyone on the ship LIKES him
  • INTELLIGENT — he plans the mutiny carefully
  • COMPLEX — he seems to CARE for Jim, even while PLOTTING against him
  • SURVIVAL-ORIENTED — at the end, he ESCAPES with some gold

Silver makes the story MORE THAN an adventure. He makes it a study of HUMAN NATURE — the struggle between GOOD and EVil within EVERY person.

Common Mistakes in ICSE Exams

  1. Seeing Silver as a SIMPLE villain — Silver is COMPLEX. He is charming and likable — even though he is a pirate. This is why he is a GREAT character.
  2. Forgetting that Jim NARRATES the story — Jim is the first-person narrator. The story is told from HIS perspective.
  3. Confusing Ben Gunn's role — Ben Gunn had already moved the treasure. He was marooned because his crew LEFT HIM for being strange.

Self-Test: 5 Questions

Q1. How does Jim Hawkins GROW through the story? A1. Jim starts as an ordinary boy helping at his parents' inn. Through the adventure, he makes BRAVE decisions — hiding in the apple barrel, taking Ben Gunn's boat, cutting the ship's anchor rope, fighting Israel Hands. He LEARNS to be courageous, to trust his instincts, and to take responsibility. By the end, he is a YOUNG MAN who has faced danger and death.

Q2. Why is Long John Silver a MEMORABLE villain? A2. Long John Silver is memorable because he is NOT purely evil. He is CHARMING, funny, and intelligent. Everyone on the ship LIKES him at first. He cares for Jim in a strange way — even while planning mutiny. He is a villain you CANNOT hate completely. This COMPLEXITY makes him one of the greatest characters in English literature.

Q3. What happens in the APPLE BARREL scene? Why is it important? A3. Jim hides in an apple barrel on the ship and overhears Silver revealing his MUTINY plan to the crew. This is the TURNING POINT of the story. Before this, Jim and the loyal men TRUSTED the crew. After this, they know who their enemies are. The apple barrel saves their lives.

Q4. Who is BEN GUNN? How does he help? A4. Ben Gunn is a sailor who was MAROONED on the island for three years. He went mad from loneliness. He had ALREADY FOUND the treasure and moved it to a cave. He helps Jim and the loyal men by revealing the treasure's true location and by ATTACKING the pirates during the final fight. He is rewarded with a share of the gold.

Q5. What is the MAIN THEME of Treasure Island? A5. The main theme is ADVENTURE and the JOURNEY from BOYHOOD to MANHOOD. Jim Hawkins faces danger, betrayal, and death — and emerges stronger and wiser. The story also explores LOYALTY vs. BETRAYAL (who can you trust?), GREED (what does treasure really cost?), and the COMPLEXITY of good and evil (especially in Long John Silver).
