2. Chandragupta Maurya — The Founder

Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire in 321 BCE. He was helped by his BRILLIANT advisor, CHANAKYA (also called Kautilya).

3. Ashoka the Great

ASHOKA (268-232 BCE) is the MOST famous ruler of ancient India. His story is one of the most DRAMATIC in world history — from a CONQUERING warrior to a PEACEFUL follower of Buddhism.

5. Ashoka's Pillars and Edicts

Ashoka had his messages CARVED on ROCKS and STONE PILLARS across his empire. These are called EDICTS.

'Ashoka's edicts are the FIRST written records we have from an Indian ruler speaking DIRECTLY to his people. They are written in PRAKRIT (the common language of the people), not Sanskrit. Ashoka wanted EVERYONE to understand his message.'

The Lion Capital

'The LION CAPITAL of Sarnath is Ashoka's most FAMOUS sculpture. Four lions sit BACK-TO-BACK on a circular base. It was placed on top of a pillar at SARNATH — where Buddha gave his FIRST sermon.'
