Earth and the Solar System
1. The Solar System
The SOLAR SYSTEM consists of the SUN and all the objects that ORBIT (go around) it.
'The Sun is the CENTRE of our solar system. Everything in the solar system REVOLVES around the Sun.'
The Sun:
- The Sun is a STAR — a huge ball of HOT, GLOWING gas.
- It gives us LIGHT and HEAT.
- 'The Sun is about 109 times BIGGER than Earth!'
- Temperature: About 5,500°C on the surface.
2. The Eight Planets
The eight planets orbit the Sun in a SPECIFIC order.
'Remember the order: MY VERY EDUCATED MOTHER JUST SERVED US NACHOS!' (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune)
Inner Planets (Terrestrial — Rocky):
| Planet | Nickname | Key Fact |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Smallest planet | Closest to the Sun — VERY hot (day) / VERY cold (night) |
| Venus | Earth's twin | Hottest planet — thick atmosphere traps heat |
| Earth | The Blue Planet | Only planet with LIFE (that we know of!) |
| Mars | The Red Planet | Has the TALLEST mountain in the solar system (Olympus Mons) |
Outer Planets (Gas Giants — Mostly Gas):
| Planet | Nickname | Key Fact |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Largest planet | Great RED SPOT (a giant storm bigger than Earth!) |
| Saturn | The Ringed Planet | Beautiful RINGS made of ice and rock |
| Uranus | The Sideways Planet | Rotates on its SIDE |
| Neptune | Farthest planet | Strongest WINDS in the solar system |
Planet Facts Table:
| Planet | Distance from Sun | Size (compared to Earth) | Number of Moons |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mercury | Closest | 0.38 × Earth | 0 |
| Venus | 2nd | 0.95 × Earth | 0 |
| Earth | 3rd | 1 × Earth | 1 |
| Mars | 4th | 0.53 × Earth | 2 |
| Jupiter | 5th | 11 × Earth | 95+ |
| Saturn | 6th | 9.5 × Earth | 146+ |
| Uranus | 7th | 4 × Earth | 27 |
| Neptune | 8th | 3.9 × Earth | 16 |
3. Other Celestial Bodies
| Object | What It Is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | A NATURAL SATELLITE that orbits a planet | Earth's Moon |
| Asteroid | Rocky body that orbits the Sun | Asteroid Belt (between Mars and Jupiter) |
| Comet | Ice and dust body with a TAIL (when near the Sun) | Halley's Comet |
| Meteor | Small rock that burns up entering Earth's atmosphere | Shooting star |
| Dwarf Planet | Small planet-like body | Pluto (was a planet, now a dwarf planet) |
'Did you know? Pluto was the NINTH planet until 2006, when scientists decided it is a DWARF PLANET.'
4. Earth — Our Home Planet
Key Facts About Earth:
- Earth is the THIRD planet from the Sun.
- Earth is the FIFTH largest planet.
- About 71% covered with WATER — called the 'Blue Planet.'
- Earth has ONE natural satellite — the MOON.
- Earth is the ONLY known planet with LIFE.
5. Rotation and Day/Night
ROTATION is the SPINNING of Earth on its AXIS.
'Imagine a TOP spinning. Earth spins like that — but much, much slower!'
Key Facts about Rotation:
- Earth rotates on its TILTED axis (tilted at 23.5°).
- One complete rotation takes 24 HOURS (one day).
- Earth rotates from WEST to EAST.
Day and Night:
- The side FACING the Sun has DAY.
- The side AWAY from the Sun has NIGHT.
- As Earth rotates, places move from day → night → day again.
'People in India experience DAY while people in America experience NIGHT — because they are on OPPOSITE sides of Earth!'
6. Revolution and Seasons
REVOLUTION is the movement of Earth AROUND the Sun.
'Earth takes one FULL YEAR to go around the Sun. That journey is called REVOLUTION.'
Key Facts about Revolution:
- One complete revolution = 365¼ DAYS (one year).
- Every 4 years, we add the extra ¼ days to make 366 days (LEAP YEAR).
- Earth's orbit is an ELLIPSE (oval shape), not a perfect circle.
Why We Have Seasons:
Earth's axis is TILTED at 23.5°. As Earth revolves around the Sun:
| Season | When | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Summer | Northern hemisphere TILTS TOWARD the Sun | MORE direct sunlight → HOTTER |
| Winter | Northern hemisphere TILTS AWAY from the Sun | LESS direct sunlight → COLDER |
| Spring | Neither tilt | MODERATE temperature |
| Autumn | Neither tilt | MODERATE temperature |
'When India has SUMMER, Australia has WINTER — because the tilts are OPPOSITE for the northern and southern hemispheres!'
7. The Moon
Key Facts about the Moon:
- The Moon is Earth's ONLY natural satellite.
- Diameter: About ¼ of Earth's diameter.
- Distance: About 3,84,400 km from Earth.
- The Moon has NO atmosphere and NO water.
- Temperature: 127°C (day) to -173°C (night).
- 'The Moon is about 4.5 BILLION years old — same as Earth!'
Moon Phases:
The Moon does NOT make its own light — it REFLECTS sunlight. As the Moon orbits Earth, we see DIFFERENT amounts of the lit side.
| Phase | What We See | When It Appears |
|---|---|---|
| New Moon | Moon is invisible (dark side faces Earth) | Start of lunar month |
| Crescent Moon | Thin sliver of light | A few days after new moon |
| First Quarter | HALF moon visible | About 7 days after new moon |
| Gibbous Moon | More than half visible | Between quarter and full |
| Full Moon | ENTIRE face is lit | About 14 days after new moon |
| Last Quarter | HALF moon visible (other half) | About 21 days after new moon |
'It takes about 29.5 days for the Moon to go through ALL its phases — from new moon to new moon.'
8. Common Mistakes
- Thinking the Moon makes its own light: 'The Moon REFLECTS sunlight. It does NOT produce its own light. The Moon is like a big mirror in the sky!'
- Confusing rotation and revolution: 'Rotation is SPINNING on the spot (day/night). Revolution is GOING AROUND something (seasons). Remember: ROTATION = one DAY, REVOLUTION = one YEAR.'
- Believing the Sun moves around Earth: 'Earth revolves around the SUN, not the other way around. The Sun APPEARS to move across the sky because Earth is rotating.'
- Thinking Pluto is still a planet: 'Pluto was reclassified as a DWARF PLANET in 2006. There are now EIGHT official planets in our solar system.'
9. Key Facts to Remember
- 'The Solar System has 8 planets orbiting the Sun.'
- 'Earth is the THIRD planet from the Sun — the only one with life.'
- 'ROTATION (24 hours) causes DAY and NIGHT.'
- 'REVOLUTION (365¼ days) and Earth's TILT cause SEASONS.'
- 'The Moon REFLECTS sunlight and goes through PHASES.'
- 'The Sun is a STAR — a huge ball of hot, glowing gas.'
10. Self-Test
Q1: Name the planets in order from the Sun.
Q2: What is the difference between rotation and revolution?

Q8: How long does Earth take to revolve once around the Sun? Why do we have a leap year every 4 years?
Answers:
A1: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. A2: Rotation is Earth SPINNING on its axis (causes day/night). Revolution is Earth GOING AROUND the Sun (causes seasons). A3: Earth ROTATES on its axis. The side facing the Sun has day. The side away from the Sun has night. A4: Earth's axis is TILTED. As Earth revolves around the Sun, different parts get more or less direct sunlight, causing seasons. A5: NO. The Moon REFLECTS the light from the Sun. The Moon does not produce any light of its own. A6: Full Moon. A7: Mars is the Red Planet. Jupiter is the largest planet. A8: Earth takes 365¼ days (one year). We add the extra ¼ days every 4 years to make 366 days (leap year with February 29).
