Our Earth — Continents, Oceans, and Directions

1. The Earth

The EARTH is the planet we LIVE on.

'Earth is called the BLUE PLANET because it looks blue from space — about 71% of Earth is covered with WATER.'

Key Facts about Earth:

FactDetail
ShapeALMOST round (a sphere, slightly flattened at the poles)
SizeThe FIFTH largest planet in the solar system
LandAbout 29% of the surface
WaterAbout 71% of the surface
AirHas ATMOSPHERE — we breathe air
LifeThe ONLY planet known to have LIVING things

2. Continents

A CONTINENT is a VERY large area of LAND.

'There are SEVEN continents on Earth. They are the BIG pieces of land separated by oceans.'

ContinentSize (Rank)Key Fact
AsiaLargestMOST populated — India and China are here
Africa2nd largestHas the SAHARA — the world's largest hot desert
North America3rd largestUSA, Canada, Mexico are here
South America4th largestHas the AMAZON rainforest
Antarctica5th largestVERY COLD — covered with ICE, no permanent people
Europe6th largestMany small countries — France, UK, Germany
AustraliaSmallestA country AND a continent — called 'Down Under'

Memory Trick:

'To remember the seven continents in order of size, think: All Ants Never Sleep — Any Elephant Always (Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia).'

Where Is India?

India is in the continent of ASIA.

3. Oceans

An OCEAN is a VERY large body of SALT WATER.

'There are FIVE oceans on Earth. They are all CONNECTED — so water can travel from one to another!'

OceanSize (Rank)Key Fact
Pacific OceanLargestThe DEEPEST ocean — covers more area than ALL land put together!
Atlantic Ocean2nd largestSeparates America from Europe and Africa
Indian Ocean3rd largestNamed after INDIA — India's southern coast touches it
Southern Ocean4th largestSurrounds ANTARCTICA — very cold
Arctic OceanSmallestAt the NORTH POLE — covered with ice

4. The Globe

A GLOBE is a MODEL of Earth — a small BALL that shows all the continents and oceans.

'The Earth is round, so the BEST way to show it is on a globe — NOT a flat map. A globe shows the TRUE shapes and sizes of continents.'

Important Lines on a Globe:

LineWhat It Is
EquatorAn IMAGINARY line around the MIDDLE of Earth (0° latitude)
Northern HemisphereThe HALF of Earth NORTH of the equator
Southern HemisphereThe HALF of Earth SOUTH of the equator
North PoleThe NORTHERNMOST point on Earth
South PoleThe SOUTHERNMOST point on Earth

The Equator:

'The EQUATOR is an imaginary line that goes around the MIDDLE of Earth like a belt. Places near the equator are HOT all year!'

  • The equator divides Earth into TWO halves (hemispheres).
  • Countries NEAR the equator: Indonesia, Kenya, Brazil.
  • India is NORTH of the equator.

5. Directions

DIRECTIONS help us find WHERE things are.

Four Main Directions (Cardinal Directions):

DirectionAbbreviationWhere It Points
NorthNUP on most maps
SouthSDOWN on most maps
EastERIGHT on most maps
WestWLEFT on most maps

Finding Directions:

  • The SUN rises in the EAST.
  • The SUN sets in the WEST.
  • At NOON, the sun is in the SOUTH (in India).
  • At night, the NORTH STAR (Pole Star) points NORTH.

'Sunrise is EAST. Sunset is WEST. In the morning, face the SUN — you are facing EAST. Behind you is WEST. Your LEFT is NORTH. Your RIGHT is SOUTH.'

6. Using Directions

My House Location:

'My house is EAST of the school. The park is WEST of my house. The market is NORTH of the park.'

Compass:

A COMPASS is a tool that always points NORTH.

'A compass has a MAGNETIC needle. The RED end of the needle always points toward the NORTH.'

7. Common Mistakes

  1. Thinking continents and countries are the same: 'A CONTINENT is a huge landmass (like Asia). A COUNTRY is a part of a continent (like India is in Asia).'
  2. Confusing oceans and seas: 'Oceans are VAST water bodies. Seas are SMALLER and often partly enclosed by land (like the Arabian Sea).'
  3. Believing the equator is a real line on Earth: 'The equator is an IMAGINARY line — you cannot see it on Earth. It exists only on maps and globes.'
  4. Getting east and west confused: 'The SUN RISES in the EAST. Repeat: "SunRISE = EAST." The SUN SETS in the WEST.'

8. Key Facts to Remember

  • 'Earth has 7 CONTINENTS: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia.'
  • 'Earth has 5 OCEANS: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Southern, Arctic.'
  • 'India is in the continent of ASIA. The Indian Ocean touches India's southern coast.'
  • 'The EQUATOR is an imaginary line around Earth's middle.'
  • 'The four main directions are NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, and WEST.'
  • 'The SUN rises in the EAST and sets in the WEST.'
  • 'A COMPASS always points NORTH.'

9. Self-Test

Q1: How many continents are there? Name them.

Q2: How many oceans are there? Name the largest and the smallest.

Q3: Which continent is India in?

Q4: Which ocean is named after India?

Q5: What is the EQUATOR? What does it divide?

Q6: Name the four cardinal directions.

Q7: Where does the Sun rise? Where does it set?

Q8: What is a globe? Why is it better than a flat map for showing Earth?

Answers:

A1: Seven: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, Australia. A2: Five oceans. Largest: Pacific Ocean. Smallest: Arctic Ocean. A3: Asia. A4: The Indian Ocean. A5: The equator is an imaginary line around the MIDDLE of Earth. It divides Earth into the NORTHERN and SOUTHERN hemispheres. A6: North, South, East, West. A7: The Sun RISES in the EAST. The Sun SETS in the WEST. A8: A globe is a MODEL of Earth (a ball). It is better than a flat map because it shows the TRUE shapes and sizes of continents without distortion.
