💡
Why this chapter matters
Plants give us food, air, and shelter, so understanding them is a key part of early science. This chapter teaches children to classify plants into five types, name the parts of a plant and their jobs, and know what plants need to grow.

Before you start — revise these

A 5-minute refresher here will save you 30 minutes of confusion below.

Plants Around Us

1. Types of Plants

Plants come in MANY shapes and sizes. They can be classified into FIVE types.

TypeStemHeightExample
TreesThick, woody, HARDVery TALL (above 3 m)Mango, Neem, Banyan
ShrubsWoody but THINNERMedium (1-3 m)Rose, Hibiscus, Lemon
HerbsSoft, GREEN, flexibleShort (below 1 m)Mint, Tulsi, Wheat
ClimbersThin, WEAK — need supportCan be longMoney plant, Grapevine
CreepersVery WEAK — grow along the GROUNDSpread on groundPumpkin, Watermelon

2. Trees — The Giants

Trees are the LARGEST plants. They have a THICK, WOODY stem called a TRUNK.

'A mango tree can live for OVER 100 YEARS! The Banyan tree can spread to cover a HUGE area.'

Parts of a Tree:

  • Trunk — the main thick stem.
  • Branches — grow from the trunk.
  • Leaves — make food.
  • Roots — hold the tree in the ground.

Examples of Trees:

  • Mango, Neem, Peepal, Banyan, Coconut, Gulmohar, Banyan.

3. Shrubs — The Medium-Sized Plants

Shrubs are BIGGER than herbs but SMALLER than trees.

'Shrubs have MULTIPLE woody stems, not one main trunk like a tree.'

Examples: Rose, Hibiscus, Lemon, Bougainvillea, Jasmine.

4. Herbs — The Small Plants

Herbs are SMALL plants with SOFT, green stems.

'Herbs are often used as MEDICINE or in COOKING. Tulsi (holy basil) is a common herb in Indian homes.'

Examples: Mint, Tulsi, Coriander, Spinach, Wheat, Rice.

5. Climbers

Climbers have THIN, WEAK stems. They cannot stand upright. They CLIMB on supports.

'Climbers use TENDRILS (thin, curly parts) or TWINE around supports to climb.'

Examples: Money plant, Grapevine, Morning glory, Pea plant, Bean plant.

6. Creepers

Creepers have VERY weak stems. They grow ALONG THE GROUND.

'Creepers spread their stems on the ground and produce ROOTS at different points.'

Examples: Pumpkin, Watermelon, Muskmelon, Sweet potato.

7. Parts of a Plant

Root:

  • GROWS underground.
  • ABSORBS water and minerals from the soil.
  • HOLDS the plant in place.

Stem:

  • CARRIES water and food between roots and leaves.
  • SUPPORTS the plant.

Leaf:

  • The FOOD FACTORY of the plant.
  • Makes food using SUNLIGHT (photosynthesis).

Flower:

  • Makes SEEDS.
  • Attracts BEES and BIRDS for pollination.

Fruit:

  • PROTECTS seeds.
  • HELPS spread seeds.
PartFunctionExample
RootAbsorbs water, anchors plantCarrot (stores food)
StemCarries water, supportsSugarcane (stores food)
LeafMakes foodSpinach (we eat this)
FlowerMakes seedsRose (beautiful smell)
FruitProtects seedsMango (sweet fruit)

8. What Plants Need to Grow

NeedWhy It Is Important
SunlightFor making food (photosynthesis)
WaterTo carry nutrients, to keep cells firm
AirFor breathing (respiration) and photosynthesis
SoilFor anchorage and minerals
WarmthFor seeds to germinate and grow

'If you take away ANY of these, the plant will NOT grow well. A plant in a DARK room will grow pale and weak.'

9. Common Mistakes

  1. Calling a shrub a tree: 'A rose is a SHRUB (medium height, many stems). A mango is a TREE (very tall, one trunk). They are different!'
  2. Thinking all plants need the same amount of water: 'Cactus needs VERY little water. A lotus needs a LOT of water. Different plants need different amounts.'
  3. Believing plants don't breathe: 'Plants DO breathe! They take in oxygen through tiny holes in their leaves called STOMATA.'
  4. Confusing climbers and creepers: 'Climbers CLIMB on supports (money plant). Creepers CRAWL on the ground (pumpkin).'

10. Key Facts to Remember

  • 'There are FIVE types of plants: Trees, Shrubs, Herbs, Climbers, Creepers.'
  • 'Trees have a thick, woody TRUNK. Herbs have SOFT, green stems.'
  • 'Climbers need SUPPORT to grow. Creepers grow along the GROUND.'
  • 'Plants need SUNLIGHT, WATER, AIR, SOIL, and WARMTH to grow.'
  • 'Leaves are the FOOD FACTORIES of plants.'

11. Self-Test

Q1: Name the five types of plants. Give one example of each.

Q2: What is the difference between a tree and a shrub?

Q3: How is a climber different from a creeper?

Q4: What do plants need to grow?

Q5: Which part of the plant makes food?

Q6: Name two herbs that are used in cooking.

Q7: What is the function of roots?

Q8: Give two examples each of (a) climbers and (b) creepers.

Answers:

A1: Trees (mango), Shrubs (rose), Herbs (tulsi), Climbers (money plant), Creepers (pumpkin). A2: Trees have ONE thick woody trunk and are very tall. Shrubs have MULTIPLE woody stems and are medium height. A3: Climbers climb on SUPPORTS using tendrils or by twining. Creepers grow along the GROUND. A4: Sunlight, water, air, soil, and warmth. A5: The LEAF makes food through photosynthesis. A6: Mint, coriander, tulsi (any two). A7: Roots absorb WATER and MINERALS from the soil and HOLD the plant in place. A8: (a) Climbers: Money plant, Grapevine. (b) Creepers: Pumpkin, Watermelon.

Questions students ask

The real ones — pulled from the Q&A community and tutor sessions.

These three types of plants differ mainly in their stems and height. A tree is the largest, with one thick, hard, woody stem called a trunk, like a mango or neem tree. A shrub is medium-sized with several thinner woody stems instead of one trunk, like a rose or hibiscus. A herb is small and has a soft, green, flexible stem, like mint or tulsi, and often grows close to the ground.

The leaf is called the food factory because it makes food for the whole plant. Inside the green leaves, the plant uses sunlight, water from the roots, and air to make its own food in a process called photosynthesis. This food gives the plant the energy it needs to grow. Since this food-making happens mostly in the leaves, we call them the plant's food factories.
