Introduction to Graphs — Class 8 Mathematics
1. Why Graphs?
A graph is a VISUAL representation of data. It turns numbers into PICTURES. 'A table of data requires careful reading. A graph REVEALS patterns instantly — trends, relationships, outliers. Graphs are the language of data.'
2. The Cartesian Coordinate System
Two perpendicular number lines: x-axis (horizontal) and y-axis (vertical). They intersect at the Origin — O(0,0). Any point is located by an ordered pair (x, y) where x = x-coordinate (abscissa) and y = y-coordinate (ordinate). 'The order matters: (3,5) and (5,3) are DIFFERENT points. x-coordinate comes FIRST — alphabetical order: x before y.'
Plotting a Point — Step by Step
To plot (4,3): Start at origin. Move 4 units RIGHT (positive x). Move 3 units UP (positive y). Mark the point. To plot (−2,5): Move 2 units LEFT. Move 5 units UP. To plot (−3,−4): Move 3 LEFT, then 4 DOWN.
3. Types of Graphs
Bar Graph
Rectangular bars of EQUAL WIDTH. Length proportional to the VALUE represented. GAPS between bars. Used for: comparing quantities across CATEGORIES.
Pie Chart

Example 1 — Distance-Time Graph
A car travels from City A to City B. The graph shows distance from A on the y-axis and time on the x-axis.
- Horizontal line = car is STATIONARY (distance not changing).
- Straight sloping line = car moving at CONSTANT speed.
- Steeper slope = FASTER speed.
- Curved line = ACCELERATING or DECELERATING.

5. Plotting a Linear Graph from an Equation
Example: y = 2x + 1. Create a table of (x,y) pairs:

7. Common Mistakes
- Swapping x and y coordinates: (3,5) means x=3, y=5. Not the other way.

'The answers are NOT calculated — they are READ directly from the graph. Learn to estimate values from the graph accurately.'
The Importance of Scale
'Choosing the WRONG SCALE can make a graph MISLEADING. A scale that's too SMALL compresses data so changes look insignificant. A scale that's too LARGE exaggerates changes. Good scales show data HONESTLY — neither hiding nor exaggerating patterns.'
Coordinates and Shapes
When points are plotted and joined, they can form geometric SHAPES: Plot A(1,1), B(5,1), C(5,4), D(1,4). Join in order. This forms a RECTANGLE. Length = 4 units (5−1), breadth = 3 units (4−1). Area = 12 sq units. Plot P(2,0), Q(5,3), R(2,6). This is an ISOSCELES TRIANGLE. 'Coordinate geometry bridges ALGEBRA and GEOMETRY. The Cartesian plane lets us describe shapes using numbers.'
Graph of a Linear Equation
