SOVEREIGN: India is fully INDEPENDENT — no external power (another country, foreign institution) controls India's governance. India makes its own domestic and foreign policy decisions. SOCIALIST: India aims to REDUCE INEQUALITY — economic and social. The state will ensure wealth is not concentrated in a few hands. Public sector, welfare schemes, and redistribution policies flow from this. ('Socialist' was added by 42nd Amendment, 1976.) SECULAR: India has NO official state religion. ALL religions are equally respected and protected by the state. The state neither promotes nor discriminates against any religion. ('Secular' added by 42nd Amendment, 1976.) DEMOCRATIC: India's government is formed through FREE and FAIR ELECTIONS based on UNIVERSAL ADULT FRANCHISE (every citizen 18+ can vote). People elect their representatives. REPUBLIC: The HEAD OF STATE (President) is ELECTED — not hereditary. India is not a monarchy. The President is elected indirectly by elected representatives every 5 years.
