Weather and Climate

1. Weather vs Climate

WEATHER is what the atmosphere is doing RIGHT NOW. CLIMATE is the AVERAGE weather over a LONG TIME.

'A simple way to remember: WEATHER is what you WEAR TODAY. CLIMATE is what you keep in your WARDROBE for the whole year.'

AspectWeatherClimate
DefinitionCondition of the atmosphere at a SHORT timeAVERAGE weather over 30+ years
Time scaleHours to DAYSDECADES (30+ years)
ChangeCan change QUICKLY (sunny → rainy in minutes)Changes VERY SLOWLY
PredictionWeather FORECAST — a few daysClimate MODELS — long-term trends
Example'It is RAINING today in Mumbai.''Mumbai has a TROPICAL climate.'

2. Elements of Weather

The weather is described by several ELEMENTS.

Temperature

TEMPERATURE is how HOT or COLD the air is. It is measured with a THERMOMETER.

ScaleUsed InBoiling PointFreezing Point
Celsius (°C)MOST countries (including India)100°C0°C
Fahrenheit (°F)USA212°F32°F

Rainfall (Precipitation)

PRECIPITATION is water that falls from the sky in any form — RAIN, SNOW, HAIL, or SLEET.

'Rainfall is measured with a RAIN GAUGE. The amount is shown in MILLIMETRES. If it says '25 mm of rain,' that means water would be 25 mm DEEP if it did not drain away.'

Wind

WIND is MOVING air. Wind is described by its SPEED and DIRECTION.

Wind TypeSpeedEffect
Light breezeSlowLeaves RUSTLE
Strong windFastBranches SWAY
StormVery fastDAMAGE to buildings
CycloneExtremely fastDESTRUCTION

Humidity

HUMIDITY is the amount of WATER VAPOUR in the air.

  • HIGH humidity = sticky, uncomfortable (summer in coastal areas like Chennai)
  • LOW humidity = dry, comfortable (winter in Delhi)

Atmospheric Pressure

AIR PRESSURE is the WEIGHT of the air pushing down on the Earth.

PressureWeather Sign
High pressureCLEAR, sunny weather
Low pressureCLOUDY, rainy weather

3. Instruments Used to Measure Weather

Wind vaneWIND directionN, S, E, W etc.
AnemometerWind SPEEDkm/h
BarometerAir PRESSUREmillibars
HygrometerHUMIDITYPercentage (%)

4. Seasons of India

India has FOUR main seasons.

SeasonMonthsWeatherCharacteristics
WinterDecember — FebruaryCOOL and DRYCold in the north (snow in Himalayas). Pleasant in the south.
SummerMarch — MayHOT and DRYVERY hot in most parts. Temperatures can reach 45°C+ in some areas.
Monsoon (Rainy)June — SeptemberWETRAIN from the southwest MONSOON winds. 80% of India's yearly rain falls now.
Post-Monsoon (Autumn)October — NovemberTRANSITIONALRain DECREASES. Temperatures COOL down.

The Monsoon

'The MONSOON is the MOST important feature of India's climate. India's farmers depend on the monsoon rains for their CROPS. A GOOD monsoon means a GOOD harvest. A BAD monsoon means DROUGHT and hardship.'

Monsoon FactDetail
SourceSouthwest monsoon winds from the INDIAN OCEAN
ArrivalFirst hits KERALA around JUNE 1
ProgressMoves NORTH across India
WithdrawalRetreats from the north by OCTOBER
ImportanceProvides 80% of India's RAINFALL

5. Factors Affecting Climate

FactorHow It Affects Climate
LatitudePlaces near the EQUATOR are HOTTER (sun's rays fall directly). Places near the POLES are COLDER.
AltitudeHigher altitude = COOLER temperature. (Mt Everest is cold even though it is near the equator in latitude.)
Distance from seaCoastal areas have MILD climates (sea warms in winter, cools in summer). Inland areas have EXTREME temperatures.
Ocean currentsWarm currents make nearby land WARMER. Cold currents make it COLDER.
Wind patternsWinds carry HEAT and MOISTURE from one place to another.
Forest coverForests KEEP the climate COOL and BRING rain. Deforestation makes the climate HOTTER and DRIER.

Climate of a Coastal City vs an Inland City

Winter15°C — 25°C (mild)2°C — 15°C (cold)

Key Facts to Remember

  • 'WEATHER is what is happening NOW. CLIMATE is the AVERAGE over a LONG TIME.'
  • The FOUR elements of weather are: temperature, rainfall, wind, and humidity.
  • India has FOUR seasons: winter, summer, monsoon, and post-monsoon.
  • The MONSOON provides 80% of India's rainfall.
  • Factors affecting climate: LATITUDE, ALTITUDE, distance from SEA, winds, and ocean currents.

Common Mistakes

MistakeCorrect Understanding
Using 'weather' and 'climate' interchangeablyWeather is SHORT-TERM. Climate is LONG-TERM (30+ years).
Thinking altitude and latitude are the sameLATITUDE is distance from the equator. ALTITUDE is height above sea level.
Believing all deserts are hotSome deserts are COLD (Gobi Desert, Antarctica)
Confusing weather and seasonsSeasons are REGULAR patterns of weather that repeat each year

Self-Test: 5 Questions

Q1. What is the difference between weather and climate?

Q2. Name four elements of weather and the instruments used to measure them.

Q3. Name the four seasons of India. Which season provides most of India's rainfall?

Q4. Why is Mumbai cooler in summer and warmer in winter compared to Delhi?

Q5. What is the monsoon? Why is it important for India?

Answers

A1. WEATHER is the condition of the atmosphere at a SHORT period (hours/days). CLIMATE is the AVERAGE weather condition over a LONG period (30+ years).

A2. (1) Temperature — thermometer. (2) Rainfall — rain gauge. (3) Wind direction — wind vane. (4) Wind speed — anemometer. (5) Air pressure — barometer. (6) Humidity — hygrometer.

A3. Winter (Dec-Feb), Summer (Mar-May), Monsoon/Rainy (June-Sept), Post-Monsoon/Autumn (Oct-Nov). The MONSOON provides about 80% of India's rainfall.

A4. Mumbai is a COASTAL city, so the SEA moderates its temperature — cool sea breezes in summer and warm air in winter. Delhi is INLAND (far from the sea), so it experiences EXTREME temperatures.

A5. The MONSOON is the seasonal wind system that brings RAIN to India from June to September. It is CRUCIAL because 80% of India's rainfall comes from it, and Indian FARMERS depend on it for their crops.
