The Little Fir Tree

'I wish I were big like the other trees. I cannot wait to grow up!' — Little Fir Tree

1. About the Story

Author: Hans Christian Andersen (adapted) Theme: Patience, appreciating the present, growing up

A little fir tree stands in the forest. It is small and IMPATIENT. It wants to grow up FAST. It does not enjoy the sunshine, the birds, or the fresh air because it is always thinking about TOMORROW. But growing up brings UNEXPECTED things.

2. The Story

The Little Tree's Complaint

In a forest, a little fir tree stands among big trees. It is UPSET about being small. When the sun shines, the little tree does not enjoy it. When birds sing, it does not listen. All it wants is to be BIGGER.

The Woodcutter Comes

One day, a woodcutter arrives. He looks at the tall trees and cuts them DOWN. The little tree is scared but also a bit happy — now it will get more sunlight since the big trees are gone.

Visitors in the Forest

In winter, people come to the forest to choose Christmas trees. They pick the FINEST, most beautiful trees. The little tree wishes it were chosen. But it is still too SMALL.

The Little Tree Grows

Seasons pass. Spring, summer, autumn, winter. Each season, the little tree grows a LITTLE more. It starts to NOTICE the beauty around it — the dewdrops, the snowflakes, the animals.

The Lesson

The little tree finally realises: being small is NOT bad. Every stage of growing has its OWN beauty. It should have ENJOYED being small instead of always wanting to be big.
