Going to Buy a Book

'A bookshop is a treasure house. Every shelf holds a new adventure waiting to be discovered.'

1. About the Story

Theme: The joy of reading, choosing books, imagination

Two children — a brother and sister — go to a bookshop with their father. They are EXCITED to choose their own books. The bookshop is FULL of wonderful books — big and small, with colourful covers and exciting titles. They have a HARD time choosing!

2. The Story

The Plan

Meena and her little brother Ravi are very excited. Papa is taking them to the BIG bookshop in town. Meena has been SAVING her pocket money. Ravi has been good all week and Papa promised to buy him a book.

Entering the Bookshop

The bookshop is HUGE! There are shelves from floor to ceiling, FILLED with books. Meena's eyes go wide. Ravi runs towards the CHILDREN'S section.

Looking at Books

Meena picks up a book with a DRAGON on the cover. She reads the back. It sounds EXCITING. Ravi finds a book of JOKES. He starts laughing before he even buys it.

The Problem of Choosing

There are SO many books! Meena picks one, then puts it back. She picks another, flips through it, then puts it back too. Ravi has the same PROBLEM. Every book looks interesting.

Papa's Advice

Papa says, 'Read the FIRST PAGE. If you want to read more, that is the book for you.' Meena and Ravi try Papa's trick.

The Right Book

Meena finds a book about a GIRL who goes on an ADVENTURE around the world. The first page is so good, she cannot stop reading. Ravi finds a book of SHORT stories with animals. They are PERFECT.

Buying the Books

At the counter, Meena counts her money. The book costs EXACTLY what she saved. Ravi's Papa pays for his book. They walk out of the shop HAPPY, holding their new treasures.

At Home

That night, Meena reads in bed with a torch. Ravi reads to his mother. They cannot WAIT to go to the bookshop again.
