The Ship of the Desert
About the Story
What it is about: The CAMEL is called the 'SHIP OF THE DESERT.' In this story, a camel EXPLAINS why it is called that. We learn all about the camel's special ADAPTATIONS that help it survive in the HOT, DRY desert.
The Story
In the HOT desert, a camel was resting. A TRAVELLER came by, very TIRED and THIRSTY.
'Oh, camel!' said the traveller. 'I have walked for HOURS. The sun is so HOT. There is no WATER anywhere. How do you SURVIVE here?'
The camel SMILED. 'I am the SHIP OF THE DESERT,' he said. 'I am perfectly SUITED for this place.'
The Camel's Hump
'What is in your HUMP?' asked the traveller.
'FAT!' said the camel. 'I eat and drink a LOT when I find food and water. The EXTRA FAT is stored in my hump. When there is no food, my body uses this FAT for ENERGY. I can go MANY days without eating!'
The Camel's Hairy Ears
'Your EARS are so HAIRY!' said the traveller.
'Yes!' said the camel. 'The hair in my ears keeps out the SAND. When the wind blows the sand, my ears are PROTECTED.'
The Camel's Long Legs
'Your LEGS are so LONG!' said the traveller.
'My long legs keep my BODY high above the HOT sand. The sand can be BURNING hot — but I stay COOL!'
The Camel's Feet
'Your FEET are so BIG and PADDED!' said the traveller.
'My broad, padded feet do NOT SINK into the soft sand. I walk EASILY where other animals would get STUCK.'
The Camel's Eyelashes
'Your EYELASHES are so LONG!' said the traveller.
'My long eyelashes PROTECT my eyes from the sand and the bright SUN. I can see clearly even in a sandstorm!'
The Camel's Nostrils
'And your NOSTRILS?' asked the traveller.
'I can CLOSE my nostrils to keep the sand OUT. I also LOSE very little water through my nose — that helps me SAVE water!'
The traveller was AMAZED. 'No wonder you are called the SHIP OF THE DESERT! You carry people across the desert, just like a SHIP carries people across the sea. And you have everything you need to survive!'
The camel nodded. 'The desert is MY home,' he said. 'And I LOVE it.'

What We Can Learn
1. Adaptation
Every creature has SPECIAL FEATURES that help it survive in its environment.
2. Be Prepared
The camel stores fat for FUTURE use. We should also PREPARE and PLAN ahead.
3. Don't Judge by Looks
The camel might LOOK strange with its hump, long legs, and funny feet. But every feature has a PURPOSE.
4. Home is Where You Belong
The camel says, 'The desert is MY home, and I LOVE it.' We should also APPRECIATE our homes and communities.

Common Mistakes
-
'Camels store water in their humps.' — No! The hump stores FAT, not water. The fat provides ENERGY when food is scarce.
-
'All camels have one hump.' — No! Dromedary camels have ONE hump. Bactrian camels have TWO humps.
-
'Camels do not need water at all.' — They DO need water, but they can go MANY DAYS without it. They drink a LOT when they find water.
-
'Deserts are always hot.' — Deserts are HOT during the day but can be VERY COLD at night because there are no clouds to trap heat.
